Today Portuguese is the seventh most widely spoken language in the world and Brazil is a new economic powerhouse. This volume publishes one of the most important early Portuguese accounts of east central Africa. The author, António da Conceição, was the ecclesiastical administrator of the Portuguese Zambesi settlements at the end of the seventeenth century. He set out to describe the Portuguese community in the valley and in the gold-bearing regions of the high veldt. In doing so he commented in detail on the African kingdoms of the region and their relations with the Portuguese. He witnessed the rise of a powerful new African dynasty in the area of modern Zimbabwe, that of Changamira, and he described the destruction of the Portuguese fairs and settlements during the wars which followed. Prior to the wars of the 1690s the Portuguese had appeared to be the dominant influence throughout much of the region of modern Zimbabwe, but their position was more fragile than it looked. Conceição points to weaknesses in the commercial structure of the Portuguese settlements and to the difficult relations which existed with traditional African authorities. He also mounted a wide-ranging critique of the missionary policy of the Dominicans which had concentrated on achieving the nominal conversion of members of the ruling Monomotapa dynasty.This account, written by a highly intelligent and well-informed cleric, is essential for understanding the history of central Africa at a period of radical change. It is now available for the first time to an English as well as a Portuguese readership.

Covilham left no account of his experiences, so Vasco da Gama had little idea of what to expect when he led his first voyage to the region in 1497. The account of this expedition paints a vivid portrait of the first contacts between Portugal and the coastal peoples of East Africa. This account, together with a wealth of carefully selected documents comprise this volume of writings which detail Portugal’s relationship with East Africa from the late fifteenth century through to the seventeenth century. It also looks at security issues, contrasting the privileged position of Réunion and Mauritius with the precarious survival of Comoros and São Tomé since their independence in 1975. The development strategies of various islands are critically examined-Maldives, Micronesia, Fiji, the Cook Islands and São Tomé and Príncipe coming under individual scrutiny. The legacy of colonial rule has been a high propensity to import and a dependence on a narrow range of marketable crops. The book argues that development strategies must take into account the need to support populations on remote islands, that economic development must be adapted to ecological constraints and traditional social structures, and that shipping plays and will continue to play a key role in any consideration of the future of island states.

Between February 1990 when the South African president, F.W. De Klerk, released Nelson Mandela from prison and legalised the ANC, and April 1994 when the first democratic elections were held, South Africa experienced revolutionary changes. This book investigates some of the problems that came to the fore during this 'interregnum' and seeks to explain how a peaceful transition was eventually achieved.Ordinary South Africans as well as those entrusted with building the new state were forced to consider questions of profound importance —human rights and land reform, the future of the Homelands and the validity of the democratic process. The book focuses on these issues and on the interplay of forces of stability and instability in a period that saw the spread of communal violence on a horrific scale such that many prophesied the outbreak of civil war. It offers a way of understanding this violence by looking at the way it served the perceived interests of traditional apartheid and the objectives of the whites in the 'decolonisation' period. The book also explores the way in which De Klerk's National Party changed from support for Inkatha and the idea of Federalism to an alliance of convenience with the ANC which made the elections of April 1994 possible.The historical dimension of the new constitution is examined and the way in which the concept of democracy was negotiated. The book also focuses on the National Peace Accord and the attempt to create institu-tions to defuse the communal violence — the first time in the modern history of South Africa that an attempt was made to create institutions to serve the needs of the population as a whole. The settlement of the early 1990s is now under threat from a revived insurgency, and the ghosts of the past remain.
