Cultural and intellectual dynamism often stand in close relationship to the expression of viewpoints and positions that are in tension or even conflict with one another. This phenomenon has a particular relevance for Early Modern Europe, which was heavily marked by polemical discourse. The dimensions and manifestations of this Streitkultur are being explored by an International Network funded by the Leverhulme Trust (United Kingdom). The present volume contains the proceedings of the Network''s first colloquium, which focused on the forms of Renaissance conflict and rivalries, from the perspectives of history, language and literature.

Polemisch geprägte Dialoge in lateinischer Sprache, dann zunehmend auch in den Volkssprachen gehören zweifellos zu den bevorzugten literarischen Ausdrucksformen, die das breite Spektrum zeitgenössischer Diskurse im Renaissance-Humanismus geprägt haben. Die Beiträgerinnen und Beiträger dieses Bandes eruieren aus latinistischer, romanistischer und anglistischer Perspektive charakteristische Formen und Funktionen polemischer Renaissancedialoge und zeichnen anhand prototypischer Beispiele ihre wesentliche Entwicklungslinien im Zeitraum zwischen 1350 und 1650 nach. Als wichtige Analysekategorien erweisen sich dabei das Verhältnis von Fiktionalität und Realität, von Oralität und Literarität, die Adressierung verschiedener Öffentlichkeiten und die zugrundeliegende Kommunikationssituation.

This volume is devoted to the spheres in which conflict and rivalries unfolded during the Renaissance and how these social, cultural and geographical settings conditioned the polemics themselves. This is the second of three volumes on ''Renaissance Conflict and Rivalries'', which together present the results of research pursued in an International Leverhulme Network. The underlying assumption of the essays in this volume is that conflict and rivalries took place in the public sphere that cannot be understood as single, all-inclusive and universally accessible, but needs rather to be seen as a conglomerate of segments of the public sphere, depending on the persons and the settings involved. The articles collected here address various questions concerning the construction of different segments of the public sphere in Renaissance conflict and rivalries, as well as the communication processes that went on in these spaces to initiate, control and resolve polemical exchanges.

This is the third and final volume of essays issuing from the Leverhulme International Network ''Renaissance Conflict and Rivalries: Cultural Polemics in Europe, c. 1300–c. 1650''. The overall aim of the network was to examine the various ways in which conflict and rivalries made a positive contribution to cultural production and change during the Renaissance. The present volume, which contains papers delivered at the third colloquium, draws that examination to a close by considering a range of different strategies deployed in the period to manage conflict and rivalries and to bring them to a positive resolution. The papers explore these developments in the context of political, diplomatic, social, institutional, religious, and art history.

Die 15 Beiträge des Bandes fokussieren Heroinnen/Heldinnen, deren exemplarisches Handeln und/oder künstlerische Repräsentation die Möglichkeit aufzeigen, die ubiquitäre moderne Skepsis gegenüber Heroen- und Heldentum – die in vormodernen Epochen komplexer war – zu überwinden. Sie verdeutlichen, dass die virtus heroica keineswegs nur männlich konzeptualisiert wird. Die Beiträge loten aus, wie wirkmächtig männliche Norm- und Referenzmuster in der historischen, literarischen, künstlerischen und kulturellen Repräsentation von Heroinnen/Heldinnen sind. Zugleich zeigen die einzelnen Modellstudien aus je unterschiedlichen (Fach-)Perspektiven und auf der Analysebasis unterschiedlichster medialer Repräsentationen die Wirkmächtigkeit der Classical Tradition, die für die interdisziplinäre Konzeptualisierung von weiblichem Heroen-/Heldentum vergangener, "heroischer" Epochen eine geradezu paradigmatische Rolle spielt.The 15 contributions of this volume focus on heroines, whose exemplary actions and / or artistic representations emphasise the possibility to overcome the ubiquitous modern scepticism towards heroism and heroes / heroines – which was definitely more complex in pre-modern "heroic" times – and highlight that conceptualisations of the virtus heroica are by no means only male(-coded). The contributions analyse the influence, prevalence and potency of male norms and references on the historical, literary, artistic and cultural representation of the discourse-inaugurating heroine en détail. At the same time, the respective contributions also serve as exemplary analyses of different forms of media representations from a variety of perspectives and research fields and traditions which illustrate the efficacy of the Classical Tradition, a tradition which plays an almost paradigmatic role in the interdisciplinary conceptualisation of female heroism / heroines of former, "heroic" epochs.

Die Beiträge des Bandes untersuchen die Occasio als wesentliches, bislang aber kaum interdisziplinär erforschtes Prinzip frühneuzeitlicher Kultur. Anlass und Gelegenheit fungieren dabei sowohl als realweltliche Impulse wie auch als textinterne Motoren kreativen Sprechens, Schreibens und Handelns. Ein praxeologisches Konzept der Occasio, das diese Aspekte bündelt, ermöglicht neue Perspektiven auf Situiertheit, formale Innovation und frühneuzeitliche Zeiterfahrung. Denn im Zusammenspiel von Situationen, Praktiken und Medien zeigt sich ein tiefgreifender Wandel: Die günstige Gelegenheit wird seit dem 16. Jahrhundert zunehmend als einmaliger, irreversibler Moment verstanden und ermöglicht damit in Europa ein Denken der Zeitlichkeit von Gegenwart, das fortan okkasionelle Kommunikationsformen prägt.The contributions in this volume examine Occasio as an essential principle of early modern culture that has thus far received little interdisciplinary attention. Occasion and opportunity function both as real-world impulses and as internal drivers of creative speech, writing, and action. A praxeological concept of Occasio that combines these aspects opens up new perspectives on situatedness, formal innovation, and early modern experience of time. For the interplay of situations, practices, and media reveals a profound change: since the 16th century, favourable opportunity has increasingly been understood as a unique, irreversible moment, thus enabling a European conception of the temporality of the present that has shaped occasional forms of communication ever since.

Streit als ein Mittel zur Aushandlung von Interessenskonflikten ist eine Konstante menschlicher Gemeinschaft. So verwundert es nicht, dass Streit, beginnend mit Kain und Abel oder dem Zorn des Achill, von den ersten Anfängen an ein fortwährendes Thema der europäischen Kultur ist. Jenseits von Krieg und Gewalt enthält Streit auch kreatives Potenzial, was sich in den verschiedensten Gattungen fiktionaler und non-fiktionaler Literatur offenbart. Hier wird bald Streit im intellektuellen Spiel nach allen Regeln der Kunst in Szene gesetzt, bald wird die Literatur im Kontext religiöser, kultureller und politischer Formierungsprozesse zum Instrument schärfster Auseinandersetzung. Dieser Band ist dem Inszenierungscharakter literarischer Streitkultur und seiner Funktionalisierung in gesellschaftlichen Veränderungsprozessen gewidmet; aus historischer, literatur- und sprachwissenschaftlicher Perspektive werden Beispiele von der Antike bis zur Frühen Neuzeit untersucht.

This volume explores various perceptions, adaptations and appropriations of both the personality and the writings of Horace in the early modern age. The fifteen essays in this book are devoted to uncharted facets of the reception of Horace and thus substantially broaden our picture of the Horatian tradition. Special attention is given to the legacy of Horace in the visual arts and in music, beyond the domain of letters. Strategies and characteristics of scournful criticism and fierce debate in the Humanist traditionRenaissance humanists were often engaged in a wide variety of polemics, ranging from matter-of-fact debate to scathing invective. The programmatic nature of Renaissance humanism, intent on a fundamental reform of language, education, and society at large, led the humanists almost inevitably to conflicts with those who represented other intellectual traditions, first and foremost the Scholastics. In addition, internal competition among humanists sparked violent quarrels, in which opponents walked a thin line between defensive self-preservation and aggressive self-promotion. In the 16th century, the practice of dispute was partly reshaped by new national and confessional divides; the intensification of controversy also prompted a more conscious reflection on the potential and limits of polemical exchange. This volume sheds light on the characteristics and strategies of the humanist art of arguing through a series of case studies from representative areas.
