In these contemporary conditions, the relation between history learning processes, in and out of school, and the construction of national identities presents an ever more important topic. It is being studied by looking at the appropriation of historical narratives, which are frequently based on the official history of a nation state. Most of the chapters in this volume are educational studies about how the learning of history takes place in school settings of different countries such as Canada, France, Germany, Latin America, Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. Covering such a broad sample of cultural and national contexts, they provide a rich reflection on history as a subject related to patriotism, cosmopolitanism, both or neither.

Al igual que el gran problema de la Biologia es explicar como un sistema fisico puede tener vida, el gran problema de la Psicologia es explicar como un sistema fisico puede tener inteligencia. El inmenso desarrollo experimentado por la metodologia experimental, junto con la irrupcion de las tecnicas de neuroimagen funcional y el surgimiento de los nuevos marcos de referencia teoricos proporcionados por la Psicologia Cognitiva, han producido explicaciones plausibles de como algo fisico puede tener inteligencia. Pero tambien este desarrollo ha hecho posible que en los ultimos anos se haya producido un colosal avance en nuestros conocimientos sobre como tiene lugar el aprendizaje humano. Este libro representa un tremendo esfuerzo para describir de un modo exhaustivo y en profundidad todo este progreso. Todo ello desde el planteamiento dominante en la Psicologia actual, segun el cual las explicaciones sobre el aprendizaje humano y la adquisicion del conocimiento han de mostrarse en conexion con las explicaciones sobre la memoria humana y, en ambos casos, en funcion de los distintos tipos de conocimiento. La decidida profundizacion en la naturaleza del aprendizaje y la memoria que se hace en el libro se apoya, a su vez, en la clarificacion de las estructuras neurofisiologicas que subyacen a la actividad mental. Los temas se presentan en el libro desde una perspectiva historica con el fin de que se comprendan los conceptos desde sus propuestas originales y para mostrar como la ciencia psicologica del aprendizaje es acumulativa. En este sentido se intentan deshacer ciertos equivocos sobre el aprendizaje que estan presentes en algunos manuales. Aunque no hay una traduccion explicita de lo tratado al terreno de la aplicacion, si que puede decirse que sin el conocimiento del contenido del libro no puede pretender hacerse una incursion en el campo de lo aplicado.

La educacion de calidad contribuye al progreso de las personas y de los paises y depende, fundamentalmente, de la calidad del profesorado y esta supeditada en gran parte a los procedimientos de seleccion y de formacion inicial. Sin embargo, cabe una mejora para el profesor en ejercicio a traves de la formacion permanente, pero, en muchos casos, los programas de actualizacion del profesorado se han mostrado poco eficaces. Ahondar en las razones del escaso exito de este tipo de programas y determinar la naturaleza de aquellos programas que realmente mejoran la calidad del profesorado es el objetivo de este libro. Para ello, se analiza lo que deberian ser los contenidos de estos cursos de actualizacion, poniendo un especial enfasis en lo que se conoce como el conocimiento pedagogico del contenido y el conocimiento pedagogico tecnologico del contenido. En cuanto a los metodos en la formacion, en la obra se propone que los cursos sean activos y contextualizados en la practica docente real; que ensenen al profesor o a la profesora a reflexionar sobre su propia practica y ser colaborativos, valiendose en parte de redes interactivas, e ir acompanados de metodos como el coaching o la mentoria. Tambien trata sobre el modo en que estos metodos pueden instrumentalizarse en programas presenciales, semipresenciales o en linea. Finalmente, se describen algunas experiencias relevantes en nuestro pais, haciendo hincapie en los programas basados en el desarrollo de las competencias docentes y especialmente en la competencia digital docente; en las asociaciones y movimientos de profesores; las experiencias de transformacion de centros y de validacion de la practica docente, y las nuevas modalidades de la formacion puestas en practica en Espana. Aunque el libro se enfoca hacia la formacion del profesor en ejercicio, gran parte de lo tratado sera util tambien en la formacion inicial.
