An authoritative new life of one of the most important figures of historyCharlemagne—ruler of the vast Frankish kingdom from 768 to his death in 814 and Holy Roman emperor from the year 800—is considered the father of Europe. He founded the first empire in western Europe after the fall of Rome, and his court at Aix-la-Chapelle was a center of classical learning and a focus of the Carolingian Renaissance. This book is a splendid introduction to Charlemagne’s life and legend.Matthias Becher describes Charlemagne’s rise to emperor and traces his political and military maneuvering against the Saxons, the Lombards, and others, as Charlemagne incorporated these lands into his own realm. Becher points out that under Charlemagne, jury courts were introduced, the laws of the Franks revised and written down, new coinage introduced, weights and measures reformed, and a Frankish grammar begun. Charlemagne tried to give his kingdom a spiritual basis by referring to antique traditions, says Becher, and he explores the tensions that existed in Charlemagne’s court between modern ideas and traditional thinking. He concludes by discussing Charlemagne’s kinship network, the evolving arrangements for his succession, the effects of his reign, and his posthumous fame.Concise, insightful, and eminently readable, this biography of Charlemagne provides a wealth of information about a remarkable man and his times. - Inbunden, Engelska, 2025

Late antique and early medieval normative sources frequently employ Roman legal terminology to denote a person’s legal inferiority, and thus suggest the continued relevance of the concepts associated with these terms. However, it is far from clear to what extent the use of identical terminology actually indicates the similarity of social phenomena. There is ample evidence of important changes regarding the rights and duties of enslaved persons and the development or emergence of other, new, forms of asymmetrical dependency. This raises the question to what extent consistency in terminology and legal practice is actually an indicator of the stability of social structures. Against this background, a group of scholars of legal, ecclesiastical, and social history were invited to a conference at the BCDSS in March 2022 to scrutinise different law codes and legal sources for their evidence of dependency. The result are these ten papers that truly enhance our understanding of slavery and other dependency relations in late antique and early medieval societies from c. 100 to c. 900 CE.

- Inbunden, Tyska, 2026

The term ''founding myth'' is shaped by the breakdown of the old and new mythologies in the 18th and 19th centuries. A revival of the values of the Christian Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Reformation, and to some extent even the Enlightenment is therefore no longer possible. On the other hand, without the preservation of this cultural heritage Europe faces the threat of losing its identity. Founding myths had - and still have - a more sustained effect on the history of premodern Europe than rational thinkers of modern Europe are often willing to admit. This volume examines the many medieval narratives of origins, lineages and direct contact with God in quite diverse contexts. The contributions discuss in particular to what extent premodern foundation myths contributed to the creation of European identity. - E-bokPDF, Tyska, 2018

Macht and Herrschaft shape the way in which human beings interact with each other in both present and past. Premodern social, political and cultural structures in all parts of the world have had significant impact on today''s globalised world. Transcultural comparison opens a way to better understand phenomena of Macht and Herrschaft and their historical dimensions. To overcome eurocentric perspectives, it is especially necessary to consider contemporary discourses. Experts on Chinese and Islamic Studies, Medieval History and Social Sciences endeavour to show both challenges as well as chances of comparative approaches to premodern social and political orders. 669 kr

A name is not merely an identifier of an individual. In pre-modern societies name-giving is a deliberate act often which might legitimise political claims and agendas. Especially the personal names of elites display performative qualities to secure past and present or to herald the future. The contributors of this volume analyse this phenomenon in a transcultural perspective comparing practices of (re)naming in Chinese, Indian and European regions. - E-bokPDF, Tyska, 2019

From ancient China, to medieval England, and to 18th century Tibet: Macht and Herrschaft shape every society in a decisive manner. Surviving structures often have an impact on our present. The analysis of these structures offers the possibility for a better understanding of the challenges and problems of the so-called globalisation. Additionally, a transcultural approach helps to overcome the Eurocentric perspective in the research of political structures. Scholars from various historical disciplines analyse the different manifestations of Macht and Herrschaft and thus offer an interesting perspective on past political structures. - E-bokPDF, Tyska, 2021

The concept of "contingency" provides new insights into the transition between the Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages besides well-known master and research narratives. Natural disasters, famines, coincidences as well as the sudden change of social political structures, death, violence or threat of violence and the associated limitation of the personal freedom marked the experiences of humans in the Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. The contingency experience can be characterised not only as an everyday day life experience but as a fundamental experience. The contributions in this volume analyse the contingency experiences and strategies in coping with them from the 5th century to the 8th century in Gaul and neighbouring areas in the dynamics between (Roman) imperium and ("Barbarian") regna. - E-bokPDF, Tyska, 2021

This volume gathers thirteen contributions from different scientific disciplines that are dedicated to questions of power, domination and gender in pre-modern times. For instance, it examines marital relationships of rulers, questions the function and stability of ruling systems and investigates patriarchy as an enduring ruling system as such. Thus, the volume offers individual case studies as well as theoretical reflections on the exercise of power and structures of domination, and then also takes a critical look on research approaches. It presents a highly complex, diverse and sometimes contradictory picture of power and domination. In conclusion, it offers (with reference to volume 11 of the publication series "Macht und Herrschaft") critical reflections, outlines joining ideas and, thus, gives valuable suggestions for future investigations of "power", "domination" and "gender" in a transcultural perspective. - E-bokPDF, Tyska, 2023

This volume brings together nine studies that deal with forms of communication between supreme rulers and elites. Using case studies from East Asia, Europe and South America between the 2nd century B.C. and the 16th century A.D., the interdisciplinary approach opens up a transcultural perspective on a global phenomenon. By examining various facets of communication such as understanding, consultation, rituals and ceremonies, but also criticism, it can be shown how supreme ruling powers in the pre-modern world were dependent on the support of their elites and how these elites in turn often found themselves in an ambivalent situation between competition and cooperation both among themselves and in their relationship with the rulers. - E-bokPDF, Tyska, 2025

This volume brings together the results of the conference held on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the Bonn Treaty of 7 November 921, during which the West Frankish King Charles III and the East Frankish King Henry I met on the Rhine near Bonn. The contributors take this particular meeting of rulers as their starting point, contextualise it as a stage in the disintegration of the Frankish empire and take an interdisciplinary, comparative look at other pre-modern summit meetings. The case studies range from the third pre-Christian to the 17th post-Christian century. - E-bokPDF, Engelska, 2026

In the early middle ages the court was a centre for meetings of secular and clerical princes. At the court of emperors, kings, and popes, the princes of different lordships met and the court was therefore at the centre of conflict. The court as centre of rule is especially important at the moment when the cooperation at the court is questioned by escalating quarrels. In the situation of conflict the notions of the princes emerge more clearly, the implicit demands the princes were subordinated to as well as the political mode of functioning at the court. In situations of conflict the mechanism of culture of debate in the early middle ages can be observed. Different aspects of conflict at court in the early middle ages were discussed at this international congress. J.B. Hetzler'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung und Carl Ernst Poeschel GmbH
