Peacebuilding and reconciliation between groups and entire nations that share a violent past are among the toughest, yet most important, challenges for modern societies. Opposing perspectives, disagreements about the interpretation of historical events or even entirely different narratives too often impede processes of rapprochement. How can teaching history contribute to overcoming the demarcation lines of such narratives and resolving historical conflicts that are passed on from generation to generation or renewed, amplified and exploited for present political purposes? This volume comprises twelve case studies—from Central and Eastern Europe to South Africa, from the Middle East to East Asia—exploring stories about successes and failures in the never-ending struggle for peaceful coexistence. All of them ultimately reflect the fundamental question of our discipline: Can we learn from history?

The Everlasting Imperial Diet (1663-1806), one of the central institutions of the Holy Roman Empire, was an important forum for the Viennese Court in building and maintaining a loyal following. It has been seen in a negative light by historical researchers for a long time. A number of points of departure for research have emerged particularly in the last few years, which, in a sense, paint a new" picture of the "old" Diet. This is the framework in which the monograph should be seen. It shows, with a focus on the Austrian, and a comparative use of the Prussian politics, in which way this important institution was a locus of political patronage and one for the formation of "Partheyen" (parties). The Empire and Diet politics of the Viennese Court during the joint governance of Emperor Franz I. and Maria Theresia were a factor which should not be underestimated in significance within the structure of Imperial, or Austrian politics. This is shown based on personal relations (clientele, patronage, interrelationships and "Partheyen"). It is important for the general context that, in this, it is not only source material of Austrian extraction that has been used, but also archive material that shed light on the perspective of the clientele and the party supporters. On the whole, the monograph makes a contribution to a better understanding of the political and social structures of the Old Empire. "

This volume analyses the tensions and interactions between the ruling norm and practice across different eras in the Electorate of Cologne. The ruling norms, which the spiritual leader obeyed to, were ambivalent: as a bishop he assumed clerical duties, which were diametrically opposed to that of a secular ruler. Besides this problem, which basically affected all clerical rules, there was also another particularity in the Electorate of Cologne. The Electorate also had to meet the demands of different (part) rules which did not always correspond. The aim of this book is to show the tense relationship between norm and practice as well as its interaction using memorable examples.

The history of the relationship between Christians and Muslims in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times was very complex. For this reason, historical education faces particular challenges. This volume aims to explore the knowledge potential that lies within the history of historization of religion as a factor of the human coexistence – be it peaceful or violent. Based on the recent history curriculum (Secondary Level II) in Northrhine-Westfalia teachers shall receive both basic information and ideas on how to convey the very challenging subject "Christians and Muslims during the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times" in a qualified and motivating manner. This book also targets readers – in or outside school - who wish to learn more about the basics and conveying methods of Christian-Muslim history.

This volume brings together the results of the conference held on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the Bonn Treaty of 7 November 921, during which the West Frankish King Charles III and the East Frankish King Henry I met on the Rhine near Bonn. The contributors take this particular meeting of rulers as their starting point, contextualise it as a stage in the disintegration of the Frankish empire and take an interdisciplinary, comparative look at other pre-modern summit meetings. The case studies range from the third pre-Christian to the 17th post-Christian century.

This anthology explores the fundamental question of whether and to what extent regional and local historical perspectives offer particularly great learning potential for children and young people as well as for adults interested in history. Located at the interface between historical didactics and regional history, analog and digital examples from schools, archives, libraries, museums, portals and scientific collections illustrate the significant tension between familiarity and the need for identification and rootedness in the local on the one hand and the gesture of critical, distanced questioning in the field of historical education on the other. The contributions range from antiquity to the present day.

The question of participation from the bottom up is addressed in this book, drawing upon a wide range of subjects from ancient history, through the Middle Ages and the early modern period, to the history of the 20th century. This allows for a trans epochal, multi-perspective and methodically broad view of a phenomenon that plays a major role in other fields of science. The book''s primary focus is on the historical perspective of diverse enforcement mechanisms and political participation, with a focus on bottom-up processes that aim to develop power to effect change. The objective is to identify ways to more thoroughly explore the potential of these approaches for historical science. The central issue pertains to the consideration of the forms, objectives, and consequences of processes that are predominantly initiated from the bottom upas opposed to the top-down perspectives that have historically dominated historical studies, particularly in the domain of rule or policy enforcement in the broadest sense. In this context, the emphasis on the reciprocity of top-down and bottom-up mechanisms assumes particular significance.
