In this elucidating work, the authors attempt to construct a logical analysis of human actions, focusing on those actions based on choice. Using their examination of "seeing to it that," they investigate a large number of topics, including imperatives, deontic logic, strategies, determinism, and promising assertion. One of the work's provocative conclusions is that one, actual future does not exist; instead, all possible futures are on par with one another.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on Advanced Parallel Processing Technologies, APPT 2003, held in Xiamen, China in September 2003.The 57 revised full papers and 21 revised short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 191 full paper submissions. All current aspects in parallel and distributed computing are addressed ranging from hardware and software issues to algorithmic aspects and advanced applications. The papers are organized in topical sections on architecture, software and theory, grid and network, and applied technologies.

Welcome to the proceedings of APPT 2005: the 6th International Workshop on Advanced Parallel Processing Technologies. APPT is a biennial workshop on parallel and distributed processing. Its scope covers all aspects of parallel and distributed computing technologies, including architectures, software systems and tools, algorithms, and applications. APPT originated from collaborations by researchers from China and Germany and has evolved to be an international workshop. APPT 2005 was the sixth in the series. The past ?ve workshops were held in Beijing, Koblenz, Changsha, Ilmenau, and Xiamen, respectively. The Program Committee is pleased to present the proceedings for APPT 2005. This year, APPT 2005 received over 220 submissions from researchers all over the world. All the papers were peer reviewed by two to three Program Committee members on their relevance, originality, signi?cance, technical qu- ity, and presentation. Based on the review result, 55 high-quality papers were selected to be included in the proceedings. The papers in this volume represent the forefront of research on parallel processing and related ?elds by researchers from China, Germany, USA, Korea, India, and other countries. The papers - cepted cover a wide range of exciting topics, including architectures, software, networking, and applications.

We are currently witnessing a proliferation in parallel and distributed processing technologies and applications. However, more new technologies have ushered in unprecented challenges to the research community across the range of high-performance computing, multi-core microprocessor architecture, networks and pervasive computing, as well as new paradigm computing issues. APPT 2007 was sponsored by the China Computer Federation, in cooperation with TCPP of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The highly positive responses to the previous APPT workshops encouraged us to continue this international event. This year, APPT was upgraded to the International Symposium on Advanced Parallel Processing Technologies. However, it kept its traditional flavor by sharing of the underlying theories and applications, and the establishment of new and long-term collaborative channels. And it will continue to provide a forum for researchers, professionals, and industrial practitioners from around the world to report on new advances in high-performance architecture and software, as well as to identify issues and directions for research and development in the new era of evolving technologies. The success of APPT 2007 was a result of the hard work and planning of a large group of renowned researchers from around the world, who served on the Technical Program Committee and the Organizing Committee. Their invaluable efforts in developing this technical program are most gratefully acknowledged. In particular, we would like to thank the Program Co-chairs, Xin Chen, Xuejun Yang, and Albert Y.
