This volume contains the papers presented at the 5th International Workshop on Advanced Parallel Processing Technologies, APPT 2003. This series of workshops is designed to strengthen the cooperation between the German and Chinese institutions active in the area of these technologies. It has continued to grow, providing an excellent forum for reporting advances in parallel processing technologies. The 5th workshop itself addressed the entire gamut of related topics, ranging from the architectural aspects of parallel computer hardware and system software to the applied technologies for novel applications. For this workshop, we received over 191 full submissions from researchers all over the world. All the papers were peer-reviewed in depth and qualitatively graded on their relevance, originality, signi?cance, presentation, and the overall appropriateness for their acceptance. Any concerns raised were discussed in the program committee. The organizing committee did an excellent job in selecting 78 papers (Among them, 21 were short ones) for presentation. In short, the papers included here represent the forefront of research from China, Germany, and the other countries.

With the advance of computer networks and hardware technology, parallel and distributed processing has become a key technology which plays an imp- tant part in determining future research and development activities in many academic and industrial branches. It provides a means to solve computati- ally intensive problems by improving processing speed. It is also the only - ableapproachtobuildinghighlyreliableandinherentlydistributedapplications. ISPA2004 provided a forum for scientists and engineers in academia and ind- try to exchange and discuss their experiences, new ideas, research results, and applications about all aspects of parallel and distributed computing. There was a very large number of paper submissions (361) from 26 countries and regions, including not only Asia and the Paci?c, but also Europe and North America. All submissions were reviewed by at least three program or technical committee members or external reviewers. It was extremely di?cult to select the presentations for the conference because there were so many excellent and interesting submissions. In order to allocate as many papers as possible and keep the high quality of the conference, we ?nally decided to accept 78 regular papers and 38 short papers for oral technical presentations. We believe that all of these papers and topics not only provide novel ideas, new results, work in progress and state-of-the-art techniques in this ?eld, but also stimulate the future research activities in the area of parallel and distributed computing with applications.

Its scope covers all aspects of parallel and distributed computing technologies, including architectures, software systems and tools, algorithms, and applications. APPT originated from collaborations by researchers from China and Germany and has evolved to be an international workshop. APPT 2005 was the sixth in the series. The past ?ve workshops were held in Beijing, Koblenz, Changsha, Ilmenau, and Xiamen, respectively. The Program Committee is pleased to present the proceedings for APPT 2005. This year, APPT 2005 received over 220 submissions from researchers all over the world. We are currently witnessing a proliferation in parallel and distributed processing technologies and applications. However, more new technologies have ushered in unprecented challenges to the research community across the range of high-performance computing, multi-core microprocessor architecture, networks and pervasive computing, as well as new paradigm computing issues. APPT 2007 was sponsored by the China Computer Federation, in cooperation with TCPP of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The highly positive responses to the previous APPT workshops encouraged us to continue this international event. This year, APPT was upgraded to the International Symposium on Advanced Parallel Processing Technologies. However, it kept its traditional flavor by sharing of the underlying theories and applications, and the establishment of new and long-term collaborative channels. And it will continue to provide a forum for researchers, professionals, and industrial practitioners from around the world to report on new advances in high-performance architecture and software, as well as to identify issues and directions for research and development in the new era of evolving technologies. The success of APPT 2007 was a result of the hard work and planning of a large group of renowned researchers from around the world, who served on the Technical Program Committee and the Organizing Committee.
