Sustainable Cropping Systems Under a Changing Climate explores how climate change is reshaping agriculture and highlights the urgent need for resilient, adaptive, and sustainable farming practices. As extreme weather, rising temperatures, and resource pressures threaten food security, this volume offers practical pathways to transform agricultural systems.Bringing together leading research, real-world case studies, and innovative strategies, this book addresses vulnerabilities and opportunities in modern farming. It covers sustainability principles, climate-smart practices, and the roles of soil health, biodiversity, conservation agriculture, organic farming, agroforestry, regenerative approaches, and plant-microbe interactions in enhancing resilience. Special focus is given to intensive systems such as rice-wheat and rainfed agriculture, particularly in the Global South. With an interdisciplinary approach and emphasis on both scientific evidence and practical application, this volume bridges a critical gap by supporting informed decision-making at farm, institutional, and policy levels. It is a timely resource for researchers, agronomists, extension professionals, and others seeking to future-proof agriculture through nature-based and technological solutions for climate adaptation and mitigation.Assesses energy use and carbon footprints across cropping systems, enabling sustainability benchmarking and reduced impactsProvides yield gap analyses and vulnerability assessments under climatic extremes, offering insights for optimizing fragile agroecosystemsEvaluates emerging technologies such as biochar and regenerative agriculture, equipping stakeholders with tools for climate mitigation and soil restorationIntegrates the water-food-energy nexus and low-input strategies, promoting efficient farming and improved livelihoods in resource-limited regions

This book provides a comprehensive and forward-looking examination of neglected and underutilized crops (NUCs) as key enablers of climate-resilient and sustainable food systems. Addressing the urgent challenges posed by climate change, environmental degradation, and food insecurity, it brings together innovative strategies, practical case studies, and emerging technologies to demonstrate how NUCs can enhance agricultural resilience, diversify livelihoods, and support biodiversity conservation.Integrating scientific evidence with indigenous and local knowledge, the chapters illustrate how NUCs contribute to efficient resource use, improved nutritional outcomes, and strengthened ecosystem services across diverse agroecological contexts. By combining theory with real-world applications, the book offers actionable insights for researchers, policymakers, development professionals, and practitioners seeking inclusive, low-input, and climate-adaptive solutions. With its interdisciplinary perspective and global relevance, this volume positions neglected and underutilized crops not as marginal commodities, but as strategic assets for transforming agriculture and empowering smallholder farmers and rural communities worldwide.

This book is a comprehensive volume dealing with climate change impacts on agriculture, and which can help guide the redesign of agricultural management and cropping systems. It includes mitigation techniques such as use of bioenergy crops, fertilizer and manure management, conservation tillage, crop rotations, cover crops and cropping intensity, irrigation, erosion control, management of drained wetlands, lime amendments, residue management, biochar and biotechnology. It also includesManagement of GHG emissionsCrop models as decision support toolsQTL analysisCrop water productivityImpacts of drought on cereal cropsSilvopastoral systemsChanging climate impact on wheat-based cropping systems of South AsiaPhosphorous dynamics under changing climateRole of bioinformatics The focus of the book is climate change mitigation to enhance sustainability in agriculture. We present various kinds of mitigation options, ways to minimize GHG emissions and better use of the latest techniques in conservation and environmental-sustainability.

This book is related to disaster risk reduction in agriculture particularly under changing climate. Climate change refers to significant, long-term changes in the global climate. There is unequivocal evidence that Earth is warming at an unprecedented rate. Human activity is the principal cause. The planets average surface temperature has risen to about 1oC since the late 19th century and most of the warming occurred in the past 40 years. The years 2016 and 2020 are tied for the warmest year on the record. Similarly, other evidence of rapid climate change includes warming of oceans, shrinking of ice sheets, retreating glaciers, decreasing snow cover, rising of sea level, declining artic sea ice, increased frequency of extreme events, ocean acidification and loss of biodiversity. Hence, climate change impacts, both extreme weather and slow-onset events, have impacted several sectors of the national economies and activities, in particular agriculture and food production, augmented by other challenges be it geopolitical, cost of finance or supply chain related, and in a time of increased food insecurity. Without CO2 fertilization, effective adaptation, and genetic improvement, each degree-Celsius increase in global mean temperature would, on average, reduce global yields of wheat by 6.0%, rice by 3.2%, maize by 7.4%, and soybean by 3.1%. Hence this book is useful as a study material to teach in the field of agriculture and climate change. The book is useful for instructors and postgraduate as well as undergraduate students involved in the study of climate change. The book also provide guidance to multiple stakeholders to design mitigation and adaptation efforts to climate change and ensure food security in the developing world.
