Optimal Sequentially Planned Decision Procedures

This volume is concerned with statistical procedures where the data are collected in sequentially designed groups. The basic premise here is that the expected total sample size is not always the appropriate criterion for evaluating statistical procedures, especially for nonlinear sampling costs (e.g. additive fixed costs) and in clinical trials. In fact, this criterion seems to have been a hindrance to the practical use of Wald's sequential probability ratio test (SPRT) despite its well-known optimum properties. This volume systematically develops decision procedures which retain the possibility of early stopping and remove some of the disadvantages of one-at-a-time sampling. In particular, for generalizations of the SPRT algorithms, methods for computing characteristics (such as operating characteristics or power functions, expected sampling costs, etc.) are developed and implemented. The procedures turn out to be optimal in a Bayesian sense as well as for problems with side conditions (e.g. specified bounds on error probabilities or expected sampling costs). A theory of optimal sampling is developed in order to prove the various properties of the procedures.

For the last few years astrophysicists and elementary particle physicists have been working jointly on the following fascinating phenomena: 1. The solar neutrino puzzle and the question: What happens to the neutrinos on their way from the sun to the earth? 2. The growing evidence that our universe is filled with about 10 times more matter than is visible and the question: What is dark matter made of? 3. The supernovae explosions and the question: What do neutrinos tell us about such explosions and vice versa? The experimental investigation of these phenomena is difficult and involves unconventional techniques. These are presently under development, and bring together such seemingly disparate disciplines as astrophysics and elementary particle physics on the one hand and superconductivity and solid-state physics on the other. This book contains the proceedings of a workshop held in March 1987 at which the above subjects and their experimental investigation were discussed. The proposed experimental methods are very new. They involve frontier developments in low temperature and solid-state physics. The book should be useful to researchers and students who actively work on these subjects or plan to enter the field. It also offers the non-expert reader with some physics background a good survey of the activities in this field.
Fluctuations And Fractal Structure - Proceedings Of The Ringberg Workshop On Multiparticle Production
Inbunden, Engelska, 1992

Tillfälligt slut
The fractal structure of multiplicity fluctuations ("intermittency") in high energy multiparticle production is discussed with experimental results from fixed target and collider experiments on e+e-, p, hadronic and nuclear collisions. Theoretical investigations concern the selfsimilar dynamics of particle cascades and quark-gluon-plasma as well as the structure of particle correlations

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the Ringberg Euroconference, which brought together 44 experimental and theoretical physicists from all over the world who are actively working in neutrino physics and in closely related fields. The purpose of the meeting was to communicate the latest experimental results and to exchange new theoretical ideas on the phenomenology of neutrinos within and beyond the standard model of particle physics, as well as in astrophysics and cosmology. Results from past and present laboratory experiments were presented at the conference, and they have yielded valuable information; continuation of such experiments and future new experiments may bring us closer to some sought-after answers. In astrophysics, the most exciting results come from Superkamiokande and refer to solar neutrinos, bringing the problem of the solar neutrino deficit closer to a solution, and to atmospheric neutrinos, indicating that the neutrinos apparently do have a non-zero mass. Decisive new results are expected from new running and new forthcoming detectors. In theory, much attention has been devoted to constructing scenarios which explain the apparently large neutrino mixing angles. In cosmology, neutrinos may play a crucial role for baryogenesis, and may contribute a hot dark matter component beyond cold dark matter, which apparently dominates the mass density of the universe. The hypothesis of a hot plus cold dark matter cosmology may be tested with the forthcoming MAP and PLANCK cosmic microwave background missions and large scale galaxy surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. This short overview shows the present liveliness of neutrino physics and the bright prospects in the field.
