Der Begriff "Hypermedia" beinhaltet sowohl ein neues Konzept als auch eine neue Technik. Ähnlich, wie fünf Jahre zuvor der Begriff "Desktop Publishing" den Einsatz des Personal Computers im Büro revolutionierte, erlaubt die Verwendung von Hypermedia-Techniken den Gebrauch des Computers für völlig neue Einsatzbereiche. Im Gegensatz zu Desktop Publishing aber ist Hypermedia nicht nur eine neue Technik, sondern es ermöglicht den Gebrauch des Computers in Bereichen, die bis heute dem (Kunst-)Handwerker vorbehalten waren. Der produktive Einsatz des Computers in Film-und Tonstudio, für das Schreiben und das Betrachten von elektronischen Handbüchern, für Unterrichtsprogramme und als Medium für die Teamarbeit verschaffen dem Computer Einstieg in neue Welten, die sich grundsätzlich von den traditionellen Computeranwendungen unterscheiden und in denen bis heute niemand Einsatzmöglichkeiten für den Computer gesehen hat.

In diesem Tagungsband wird eine Übersicht über den Stand der Forschung auf dem Gebiet Hypertext/Hypermedia gegeben. Er enthält die gesammelten Beiträge der "SI Hypertext/Hypermedia Fachtagung" vom 6. April 1990 in Basel und des Workshops "Hypertext/Hypermedia `90" vom 23./24. April in Darmstadt und umfaßt damit die meisten aktuellen Projekte im deutschen Sprachraum. Es werden sowohl grundlegende Ideen als auch praktische Anwendungen des Hypertext-Konzepts wie on-line Handbücher und Unterrichtsprogramme besprochen. In theoretischen Beiträgen wird auf die Problematik der Navigation im Hyperraum eingegangen und die Verwendung von Hypertext zur Kommunikation von Wissen wird untersucht. Weiterhin werden Beziehungen hergestellt zu anderen Gebieten der Informatik, wie z.B. Datenbanken und Expertensystemen. Dabei werden insbesondere Ansätze zur Integration dieser drei Technologien untersucht. In den Beiträgen des praktischen Teils werden einerseits neue Hypertext- und Hypermedia-Systeme vorgestellt, andererseits aber auch Anwendungen solcher Systeme. Dies geht von Programmeditoren mit Hypertext-Fähigkeiten über Entwurfstechniken zur Erstellung von Hypertext-Dokumenten bis zum Einsatz von Hypertext für den Unterricht. Neben theoretischen Untersuchungen wurde in diesem Bereich auch bewußt Raum gelassen für die Besprechungen von interessanten Dokumenten und Anwendungen wie der Konversion einer mittelalterlichen Weltkarte in Hypertext-Form oder dem Einsatz von Hyperdokumenten zur Filmanalyse.
