It is often forgotten that anthropology--the scientific study of cultural difference--arose from situations that required a practical management of cultural differences. Out of the practical contexts of colonial contact--administration, mission, nationalism, policing, settler cultivation, tourism, warfare--emerged methods, and images of otherness, that inform anthropological notions of cultural difference to this day.The essays in this volume share the assumption that "ethnography," far from being the unique purview of anthropology, is a broader field of practice out of which and alongside which anthropology attempted to distinguish itself as a scientific discipline. They explore a variety of situations in colonial South and Southeast Asia and Africa and in the treatment of the indigenous inhabitants of North America and Australia to provide genealogies of present-day anthropological practices, tracing them back to the subjects of colonial ethnography.This book introduces into the history of anthropology many of the insights developed in recent studies in history, cultural studies, and the anthropology of colonialism. "Magic" and "modernity" are rarely regarded as belonging together. Evolutionism regarded magic as quintessentially "unmodern." Museum Temporalities analyzes how museums relate to time. It explores the hidden temporal assumptions and practices that define museums. How might these assumptions help us to better understand and address museums’ often problematic and painful relationship to the colonial past? Since the nineteenth century, the globalization of the museum has spread specific understandings of permanence and temporariness that inform museum display, separated the modern from the traditional, and promoted preservation and development in ways that tacitly assume a North Atlantic cultural outlook as the end point of history and the standard that determines a hierarchy of science, art, technology, craft, and natural history. Questioning linear and epochal genealogies that assume Enlightenment surveys of the classifiable universe as the origin of the museum, Modest and Pels present evidence that global exhibitionary complexes will fail to sufficiently address questions of decolonization and restitution if they do not make room for the ethnographic museum as a principal site where suggestions for the future of all museums can be generated. They show that any attempt to address the problematic and painful relationship that museums have to colonial pasts requires them to reorient their relationship to time. The chapters in this volume assembles building blocks for a theory and practice of museums that no longer assumes the need for identities, objects, and collections to be permanent; for the museum to be the end point of knowledge; and for "art" or "science" to be the universal measure to which other forms of cultural production can only aspire. Christian missions in Africa are commonly viewed as a blatant example of ethnocentrism. This stereotype partly exists because the day-to-day interaction between missionaries and Africans has so rarely been studied. This book shows how Africans and missionaries co-produced a Catholic Church in the Uluguru mountains of Eastern Tanzania in the late colonial period, thereby adapting each others' routines in the fields of initiation, education, magic, and religion. It explores how the presence of the mission resulted in a rift between spiritual and worldly magic, and in the underdevelopment of the capacity of Waluguru to manage their own practices of revelation.
