This book is a general introduction to the theory of schemes, followed by applications to arithmetic surfaces and to the theory of reduction of algebraic curves. The first part introduces basic objects such as schemes, morphisms, base change, local properties (normality, regularity, Zariski''s Main Theorem). This is followed by the more global aspect: coherent sheaves and a finiteness theorem for their cohomology groups. Then follows a chapter on sheaves of differentials, dualizing sheaves, and Grothendieck''s duality theory. The first part ends with the theorem of Riemann-Roch and its application to the study of smooth projective curves over a field. Singular curves are treated through a detailed study of the Picard group.The second part starts with blowing-ups and desingularisation (embedded or not) of fibered surfaces over a Dedekind ring that leads on to intersection theory on arithmetic surfaces. Castelnuovo''s criterion is proved and also the existence of the minimal regular model. This leads to the study of reduction of algebraic curves. The case of elliptic curves is studied in detail. The book concludes with the funadmental theorem of stable reduction of Deligne-Mumford.The book is essentially self-contained, including the necessary material on commutative algebra. The prerequisites are therefore few, and the book should suit a graduate student. It contains many examples and nearly 600 exercises.

This monograph presents a self-contained introduction to the analytic foundation of a level set approach for various surface evolution equations, including curvature flow equations. These equations are important in many applications, such as material sciences, image processing, and differential geometry. The goal is to introduce a generalized notion of solutions allowing singularities and to solve the initial-value problem globally-in-time in a generalized sense. For the Second Edition, new chapters have been added that describe a recent approach to surface evolution equations based on deterministic discrete two-person games. This game-theoretic interpretation is used to discuss the fattening phenomenon for the curvature flow equation and to provide an alternative proof for convexity preserving properties.This text is suitable for applied researchers who would like to know the detail of the theory, as well as its flavor; it is also suitable for graduate students interested in the field. Prerequisites include calculus, linear algebra, and some familiarity with semicontinuous functions. Familiarity with differential geometry and the theory of viscosity solutions is not required.

This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at the 9th International Conference on Rough Sets, Fuzzy Sets, Data Mining and Granular Computing (RSFDGrC 2003) held at Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Chongqing, P.R. China, May 26–29, 2003. There were 245 submissions for RSFDGrC 2003 excluding for 2 invited keynote papers and 11 invited plenary papers. Apart from the 13 invited papers, 114 papers were accepted for RSFDGrC 2003 and were included in this volume. The acceptance rate was only 46.5%. These papers were divided into 39 regular oral presentation papers (each allotted 8 pages), 47 short oral presentation papers (each allotted 4 pages) and 28 poster presentation papers (each allotted 4 pages) on the basis of reviewer evaluations. Each paper was reviewed by three referees. The conference is a continuation and expansion of the International Workshops on Rough Set Theory and Applications. In particular, this was the ninth meeting in the series and the first international conference. The aim of RSFDGrC2003 was to bring together researchers from diverse fields of expertise in order to facilitate mutual understanding and cooperation and to help in cooperative work aimed at new hybrid paradigms. It is our great pleasure to dedicate this volume to Prof. Zdzislaw Pawlak, who first introduced the basic ideas and definitions of rough sets theory over 20 years ago.

The workshop organizers put a tremendous amount of e?ort into soliciting and - lecting papers with a balance of high quality, new ideas and new applications. We asked all workshops to follow a rigid paper selection process, including the procedure to ensure that any Program Committee members are excluded from the paper review process of any paper they are involved with. A requirement about the overall paper acceptance rate of no more than 50% was also imposed on all the workshops.
