Diaspora or 'ethnic return' migrants have often been privileged in terms of citizenship and material support when they seek to return to their ancestral land, yet for many, after long periods of absence - sometimes extending to generations - acculturation to their new environment is as complex as that experienced by other immigrant groups. Indeed, the mismatch between the idealized hopes of the returning migrants and the high expectations for social integration by the new host country results in particular difficulties of adaptation for this group of immigrants, often with high societal costs. This interdisciplinary, comparative volume examines migration from German and Jewish Diasporas to Germany and Israel, examining the roles of origin, ethnicity, and destination in the acculturation and adaptation of immigrants. Die rund 280 Fa milien mit (wenigstens) einem Kind im Alter von 10 bis 16 Jahren waren nämlich so ausgewählt worden, daß zwei Gruppen unterschiedlicher Aufent haltsdauer (Neuankömmlinge, 0 bis 18, und erfahrene Aussiedler, 18 bis 36 Monate) entstanden, die sich aber im Alter der Jugendlichen nicht unter schieden. Hinsichtlich der kurzfristigen Bewältigung der neuen Lebensumstände bzw. der längerfristigen Adaption haben wir vor allem zwei Aspekte be trachtet: Soziokulturelle Anpassungen betreffen beispielsweise bei den Eltern Erfolg im Finden eines Arbeitsplatzes und bei den Jugendlichen die Einrich tung psychosozialer Übergänge nach den in Deutschland üblichen Zeitvor stellungen. Psychische Anpassungen umfassen depressive Verstimmungen bei Eltern und Jugendlichen als wichtigstes Beispiel.

Most contributions to this volume originated as papers given at an inter national conference on Integrative Perspectives on Youth Development held in Berlin (West) in May, 1983. This conference was part of a 6-year longi tudinal research program on the causes of substance use among adolescents in Berlin, which is now in its fourth year. The conference title deliberately did not refer to substance use. However, its relevance to an explanation of drug-related problem behavior was made evident to everyone invited to the conference. The search for integrative perspectives in youth development originated in a dilemma that became obvious during the planning of intensive research on concomitants of substance use. In the methodology for research on youth development, there were two lines of thought that seemed completely unre lated to each other: One line of thought was oriented toward the person, leaving situational aspects aside, while the other concentrated on ecological or situational determinants and thus neglected the aspects of development and internal processes. The integration of both these directions seemed to be an unusually promising approach for any project that aimed to understand changes in the individual within a rapidly changing urban setting. The best way to come closer to a resolution of that dilemma seemed to be an intensive exchange between the American and European scientific communities on this issue.
