Migrants, both spatially and mentally, no longer settle in only one national territory but interact or move across borders regularly, profoundly challenging the nation-state and the image of society as a container. This volume explores the ways in which migrants, activists and professionals connect social worlds across national boundaries through a variety of social practices. The contributions from various disciplines - anthropology, economics, political and social sciences, educational studies and social work - illuminate the meaning of agency in situations where the capabilities of transnational actors are constrained by nation-states, their borders and social institutions. Based on a relational understanding of transnational agency which builds upon new insights and developments within transnational studies and network theory, this compilation of chapters presents transnational processes and developments in and across various regions of the globe - in East Asia, the Americas, the EU, Southeast Asia, Africa and Australia, in the borderlands of Mexico and the US, in the transatlantic space of the 19th-century fin de siècle world - in order to demonstrate the importance of gaining, assisting and expanding agency in transnational contexts.

Transnational Social Policy highlights the changing face of social policy and social work against the background of accelerating transnationalization of economies, labour markets, education, social services, and care. This book explores the role and impact of the settlement house movement in the global development of social welfare and the social work profession. It traces the transnational history of settlement houses and examines the interconnections between the settlement house movement, other social and professional movements and social research. Looking at how the settlement house movement developed across different national, cultural and social boundaries, this book show that by understanding its impact, we can better understand the wider global development of social policy, social research and the social work profession.

In diesem Buch wird die Ethnographie unter unterschiedlichen Fragestellungen im Kontext der Erziehungswissenschaft erörtert. Ausgangspunkt ist die Beobachtung, dass sich ethnographische Forschung im Kontext des Bildungs- und Sozialwesens in mehrfacher Hinsicht "auf unsicherem Terrain" bewegt: Zum einen beinhaltet ethnographische Forschung generell ein produktives Verunsicherungspotential beim Eintritt in ein neues Feld. Zum anderen kann Ethnographie im Kontext des Bildungs- und Sozialwesens noch nicht auf breite Feldforschungserfahrungen hinweisen. Der Band versteht sich als Beitrag zur Markierung und Diskussion methodischer Erfahrungen und Probleme der Ethnographie in der Pädagogik mit Kindern und Jugendlichen und als Hilfestellung bei der Konzeptualisierung und Realisierung ethnographischer Projekte.

Kinder- und Jugendarbeit - vor allem in Jugendhäusern, Jugendzentren und offenen Projekten - erscheint oberflächlich betrachtet als ein wenig professionalisiertes Handlungsfeld. Diese ethnographische Studie zeigt, dass dieser Eindruck der Wirklichkeit nicht gerecht wird. In Koproduktion mit den Kindern und Jugendlichen gestalten PädagogInnen eine Kinder- und Jugendarbeit eigenen Typs. In der hier vorgelegten empirischen Studie zeigt sich ein Feld der non-formalen Bildung, das Kindern und Jugendlichen Lern- und Erfahrungsfelder präsentiert, die schulische Szenarien nicht bieten können.

'Grenzobjekt' - Boundary Object - ist ein sozialwissenschaftliches Konzept, das intendiert, die Arten von Wissen und Praktiken begrifflich zu fassen, welche unterschiedliche wissenschaftliche Disziplinen miteinander verbinden: oder auch Wissenschaft und andere Soziale Welten zusammenbrignen. Gemeinsam ist der Vielzahl wissenschaftlicher und praktischer Bezüge, die sich als 'Grenzobjekte' lesen lassen, dass sie heterogene und starker Eigenlogik folgende Sinnsysteme mit 'schwachen' Verbindungen untereinander ausstatten, die aber genau dadurch bedingt verlässliche Arbeitsbeziehungen zum beiderseitigen Nutzen ermöglichen.

Das Studienbuch macht in Originaltexten der US-amerikanischen Debatte zur Bedeutung der ‚Community‘ zentrale Quellen zugänglich, aus denen sich neue Perspektiven auf die Geschichte der Gemeinwesenarbeit ergeben. Die Auseinandersetzung mit den Texten aus den Jahren zwischen 1890 und 1935 ermöglicht Studierenden ebenso wie Fachwissenschaftler:innen einen differenzierten Einblick in die historische Entwicklung des Handlungsfelds Sozialer Arbeit und eine historische Rekonstruktion von heute vergessenen Zusammenhängen und internationalen Verbindungslinien. Durch kurze Analysen und Rahmungen führen die Autoren in den Kontext der englischsprachigen Texte ein und eröffnen dadurch eine eigenständige Spurensuche des historischen Diskurses um Gemeinschaft und Sozialraum.

In diesem Band wird mittels des Übersetzungsbegriffs die Möglichkeit verhandelt, Pädagogik anders zu denken. Sozial- und kulturwissenschaftliche Übersetzungstheorien werden dabei genutzt, um die theoretische Produktivität von Übersetzung für die Pädagogik auszuloten: Als Topos pädagogischer Theoriebildung lassen sich mit Übersetzung Verhandlungen über die Bedeutung von Anderem und Anderen und über die Geltung von pädagogischem Wissen im Horizont eines möglichen oder zukünftigen Anders-Sein thematisieren. Ein pädagogischer Einsatz des Übersetzungsbegriffs verspricht zudem mögliche Antworten auf die Frage nach dem Wie der Vermittlung von Bedeutung und Wissen.Die Beiträge zielen dementsprechend im ersten Teil des Bandes darauf, Übersetzung als begriffliche Kategorie pädagogischer Theoriebildung zu entwerfen. In einem zweiten Teil wird Übersetzung als Analysekategorie der Begegnung kultureller Lebensformen und Ordnungen eingesetzt. Schließlich fokussiert der dritte Teil Formen der pädagogischen Theorieproduktion und erziehungswissenschaftlichen Wissensarbeit im transnationalen bzw. globalen Kontext.

Das Jahrbuch versammelt 18 Beiträge, in denen die grundlegende Bedeutung von Grenzbildungen und Grenzziehungen für Organisationen und für die Theorie und Praxis der Organisationspädagogik herausgearbeitet wird. Die Beiträge beobachten, analysieren und untersuchen Grenzen, die von und durch Organisationen, aber auch durch organisationspädagogische Praxen gezogen, überschritten und aufgelöst werden. Das Bedingungsverhältnis von Grenzziehung und Grenzüberschreitung sowie die sich dabei konstituierenden Grenzobjekte und -praxen werden in begrifflich-theoretisch ausgerichteten Arbeiten wie auch in empirischen Untersuchungen systematisch reflektiert. Damit trägt der Band zur Klärung des Verhältnisses von Organisation und Grenze und zur weiteren Konturierung der spezifischen Perspektive der Organisationspädagogik bei. Über das Schwerpunktthema hinaus enthält das Jahrbuch zwei weitere Beiträge aus der aktuellen organisationspädagogischen Forschung.
