In this book, Sven Bernecker investigates the defining characteristics of memory and the issues essential to understanding it. The book gives a comprehensive philosophical account of memory and illuminates issues central to contemporary discussions of metaphysics and epistemology such as personal identity, causation, mental content, and justification.Bernecker argues that remembering something, unlike knowing something, does not require having a belief. There are also instances where one has a memory but no justification for what one remembers. These surprising results suggest that remembering something requires standing in an appropriate causal relation to the relevant past representation. The book shows that a distinction needs to be made between the causal dependence of a memory on a past representation and the causal dependence of amemory on that which retains the past representation. This distinction turns out to be crucial for discerning cases of remembering from instances where some content is learned anew rather than recalled. The book proposes a theory of memory contents whereby they are determined by relations the subjectbears to his past physical or social environment rather than by states internal to the subject. This theory is shown to be compatible with the compelling psychological criterion of personal identity. Against the background of the theory of memory contents, Bernecker maintains that a memory content need not be the same as, but only similar to, the content of the representation from which it causally derives. This view has interesting results for the debate over false memories and the theory ofself-knowledge.

What does it take for a belief to count as knowledge rather than lucky guesswork? Explaining Knowledge develops a new answer, in favor of an “abductivist” theory of knowledge. According to abductivism, a belief constitutes knowledge when, given the way it is formed or maintained, the best explanation of its being true rather than false lies in the facts themselves rather than in adventitious factors. Sven Bernecker here develops the abductivist theory and argues for its superiority by contrasting it with its two main rivals: safety theory and causal explanationism. To situate these competing theories, safety theorists maintain that a belief counts as knowledge only if it could not easily have been false, emphasizing modal robustness, while causal explanationists insist that knowledge requires the right kind of causal connection---often a direct explanatory chain---between fact and belief. Both approaches capture important insights, but each faces longstanding difficulties in accounting for environmental luck, mathematical knowledge, knowledge based on false premises, and lottery cases.Bernecker posits that the abductivist theory of knowledge is superior to its competitors because it can handle a wider range of test cases and offers greater explanatory power-notably, unlike causal explanationism, it can handle barn cases and account for mathematical knowledge. Sven Bernecker presents an analysis of the concept of propositional (or factual) memory, and examines a number of metaphysical and epistemological issues crucial to the understanding of memory. Bernecker argues that memory, unlike knowledge, implies neither belief nor justification. There are instances where memory, though hitting the mark of truth, succeeds in an epistemically defective way. This book shows that, contrary to received wisdom in epistemology, memory not only preserves epistemic features generated by other epistemic sources but also functions as a source of justification and knowledge. According to the causal theory of memory argued for in this book, the dependence of memory states on past representations supports counterfactuals of the form: if the subject hadn't represented a given proposition in the past he wouldn't represent it in the present. The book argues for a version of content externalism whereupon the individuation of memory contents depends on relations the subject bears to his past physical or social environment. Moreover, Bernecker shows that memory doesn't require identity, but only similarity, of past and present attitudes and contents. The notion of content similarity is explicated in terms of the entailment relation.
