Thomas More: Utopia/ Francis Bacon: New Atlantis/Henry Neville: The Isle of Pines With the publication of Utopia (1516), Thomas More introduced into the English language not only a new word, but a new way of thinking about the gulf between what ought to be and what is. His Utopia is at once a scathing analysis of the shortcomings of his own society, a realistic suggestion for an alternative mode of social organization, and a satire on unrealistic idealism. Enormously influential, it remains a challenging as well as a playful text. This edition reprints Ralph Robinson's 1556 translation from More's original Latin together with letters and illustrations that accompanied early editions of Utopia. Utopia was only one of many early modern treatments of other worlds. This edition also includes two other, hitherto less accessible, utopian narratives. New Atlantis (1627) offers a fictional illustration of Francis Bacon's visionary ideal of the role that science should play in the modern society. Henry Neville's The Isle of Pines (1668), a precursor of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, engages with some of the sexual, racial, and colonialist anxieties of the end of the early modern period. Together these texts illustrate the diversity of the early modern utopian imagination, as well as the different purposes to which it could be put. The History of King Richard the Third is Thomas More's English masterpiece. This volume is the third to appear in the modernized series of Selected Works of St. Thomas More, a series designed to make available to the general reader works which have already appeared or are about to appear in the Yale Edition of the Complete Works.The History of King Richard III is preceded by a brief introduction which offers a succinct estimate of More’s achievement and indicates the important part that his work played in shaping the popular portrait of the last Yorkist king. The conventional view of Richard III in English history is essentially More’s; it was his narrative that provided Shakespeare with both plot and inspiration for his Tradgedy of Richard III. In addition, More’s History is a landmark in the development of sixteenth-century prose and a remarkable witness to what the new humanist history could accomplish.This volume is rounded out by a fine selection of More’s English and Latin poems. More’s early English poems – "A Mery Gest," "Pageant Verses," "A Rueful Lamentation," "Lewis the Lost Lover," and "Davey the Dicer" – are presented in their original spelling; the selections from the Latin epigrams, about fifty poems in all, are given in English translation. More's Latin reply to Bugenhagen (1526), given here with a facing English translation, is a comparatively brief but intense rebuttal of the principal points of Lutheran teaching concerning scripture ant tradition, faith and works, grace and free will, clerical celibacy, and the sacraments. It presents arguments elaborated at much greater length in More's other polemical works. Supplication of Souls (1529) refutes A Supplication for the Beggars, an anticlerical pamphlet by Simon Fish which Henry VIII seems to have regarded with some favor. More places his response in the mouths of the souls in purgatory. In the first book, he contemptuously demolished Fish's loose railery with accurate statistics and historical analysis. In the second, he defends the traditional doctrine of purgatory with brief arguments drawn from reason and a detailed analysis of scriptural passages. Letter against Frith (1532) answers John Frith's Zwinglian arguments against the physical presence of Christ in the more. Written to an unknown correspondent, it is the briefest and mildest of More's polemical works and anticipates arguments presented moer elaborately in More's The Answer to a Poisoned Book (1533). Besides full introductions and commentaries, a glossary, and an index, this volume contains seven appendices giving the works to which More is replying and other thematic, historical, and bibliographical matter closely related to the three works by More.
