Children who come into conflict with the law are more likely to have experienced violence or adversity than their non-offending peers. Exacerbating the deleterious effects of this childhood trauma, children’s contact with the criminal justice system poses undue risks of physical, sexual, and psychological violence. This book examines the specific forms of violence that children experience through their contact with the criminal justice system.
Comprising contributions from leading scholars and practitioners in children’s rights and youth justice, this book profiles evidence-based prevention strategies and case studies from around the world. It illustrates the diversity of contexts in which various forms of violence against children unfold and advances knowledge about both the nature and extent of violence against children in criminal justice settings, and the specific situational factors that contribute to, or inhibit, the successful implementation of violence prevention strategies. It demonstrates that specialised child justice systems, in which children’s rights are upheld, are crucial in preventing the violence inherent to conventional criminal justice regimes.
Written in a clear and accessible style, this book will be of interest to students and researchers engaged in studies of criminology and criminal justice, youth justice, victimology, crime prevention, and children’s rights.

In the data economy, childhood is a lucrative commodity. The digital technologies that offer incredible possibilities for children’s enrichment and empowerment also open avenues for their exploitation, denigration, criminalisation, and control. Coming to grips with this paradigm of technological benefits and harms requires a deepened understanding about how children''s rights are engaged within a technocratic system that distributes costs and benefits unequally. In the context of the altered flows of data and power in the digital age, Wendy O’Brien argues for a resurgence in the commitment to equal human dignity. Challenging narrow conceptualisations of online risks to children, the book identifies the need to confront the techno-social status quo that accepts harms against children as inevitable. This book will be of interest to legal scholars, criminologists, policy makers and technologists with an interest in upholding children’s rights in the age of AI.

This book examines the historical present as a turning point for women who are moving into traditional masculine cultures of team contact sports. The authors investigate how shifting gender dynamics are reshaping sports practices, organisations, and representations. They ask: What happens when women’s sporting bodies enter spaces that have historically excluded them? How is this change embodied, experienced, and navigated by athletes, stakeholders, and organizations within the broader sports ecosystem? And how does resistance to gender equality manifest in different forms?
Exploring how the challenge of gender inequity materialises through the relations and actions that are transforming sport organisations in complex ways, the book suggests that change must be translated in time and space, recognising the global and local forces that shape the sociomateriality of sport practices, organisations and assemblages. The pursuit of gender equity in sport as a political, economic and cultural phenomenon, raises key questions about how ‘value’, ‘markets’, ‘space’ and ‘time’ materialise through gendered formations. In this way the authors articulate a feminist future of sport for the present.
