Transforming Sport and Physical Cultures through Feminist Knowledges contributes new perspectives on the entanglement of digital and physical cultures, more-than-human relations, post and decolonial ways of knowing, and how onto-epistemologies of sport come to matter. These perspectives are explored through a diverse array of topics, including, the embodiment of netball through Feminist Physical Cultural Studies; pregnant embodiment and implications of the postgenomic turn; posthumanist perspectives on women’s negotiation of affective body work and an autoethnographic account of how masculinity materialises through football; the mediation of gendered subjectivity through the digital-physical cultures of cycling; as well as how decolonial and postcolonial approaches identify the gendered and racialised relations of power in sport for development and football campaigns aimed at women’s empowerment. The thread that connects these chapters is the ‘doing’ of feminism as a generative knowledge practice that can transform ways of imagining, knowing, and affecting more equitable futures.

This feminist collection contributes to the movement of ideas and transformation of knowledge within and across sport and physical cultures. Authors explore the power relations implicated in the gendered formation of physical cultures (across leisure, sport, the arts, tourism, well-being, and various embodied practices) from a range of disciplinary perspectives and theory-method approaches.

This book shows the potential of posthuman thinking for rethinking health care, experiences, subjects and interventions. It explores a range of posthuman dilemmas across diverse health issues as contributors grapple with the ethical, ontological and epistemological relations of knowing and doing health.

The volume problematizes the rational, agentic individual as the key driver of health-related action and experience. Contributors move beyond long-held humanist assumptions about health, illness, and well-being and attune – theoretically and methodologically - to the entangled relations or ecologies that instantiate realities. They reimagine how care practices and healthcare experiences materialise through human-non-human relationality as biosocial environments. Chapters explore and articulate the agency of more-than-human entities in health-related processes to shed new light on health interventions, evaluations, and health policy. Taken together, the book highlights that although posthumanism enables health sociologists to progress particular agendas, it is essential to further problematise the posthuman decentring of the human by bringing sustained attention to bear on the ethical and political implications of this approach to knowledge-making in health. This book examines the historical present as a turning point for women who are moving into traditional masculine cultures of team contact sports. The authors investigate how shifting gender dynamics are reshaping sports practices, organisations, and representations. They ask: What happens when women’s sporting bodies enter spaces that have historically excluded them? How is this change embodied, experienced, and navigated by athletes, stakeholders, and organizations within the broader sports ecosystem? And how does resistance to gender equality manifest in different forms?  

Exploring how the challenge of gender inequity materialises through the relations and actions that are transforming sport organisations in complex ways, the book suggests that change must be translated in time and space, recognising the global and local forces that shape the sociomateriality of sport practices, organisations and assemblages. The pursuit of gender equity in sport as a political, economic and cultural phenomenon, raises key questions about how ‘value’, ‘markets’, ‘space’ and ‘time’ materialise through gendered formations. In this way the authors articulate a feminist future of sport for the present.
