This book is a revised and updated version of The State of the Art of Professional Education and Practice (1988), edited by Robert B. Young and Leila V. Moore. The goal of this book is to present a visionary reexamination of the status of student affairs preparation and practice by some of the field's leading thinkers. In the years since the original book was prepared, important changes have taken place within student affairs and in higher education generally. Higher education is being bombarded with issues resulting from the rapid changes in society. If student affairs are to continue to play a positive and meaningful role in the educational enterprise, its practitioners must be thoroughly familiar with these issues and take the lead in developing strategies to address them. The intent of this book is to assist practitioners and educators with these challenges. Co-published with American College Personnel Association.

College student personnel work was born during a period of reform in the United States; it was and remains today a unique American invention. To understand this peculiar phenomenon, it is helpful to consider the historical and cultural climate in which it was born and developed. This book describes student affairs as a child of this reform movement and illustrates how it has retained much of this early characteristic during its continued development. The early years of college student personnel occurred during the Progressive period, but it was not until 1937 that it would receive a clearly stated philosophy when a group of educators wrote The Student Personnel Point of View. This book traces the years that followed as the field struggled to achieve identity and legitimacy. It provides clear evidence of the continuation of an experimentalist philosophy in its development. This volume of case studies, based on original qualitative research, has been written expressly for student affairs educators and administrators at the college and university level. Giving Voice to Critical Campus Issues addresses the complex issues of classism, student suicide, alcohol-related death, acquaintance rape, multiracial identity, and the self-development of young adults with alcoholic parents. Practitioners and faculty can use this crucial book to enrich their understanding of the deep complexities of campus life; and they will also find themselves more attuned to the often unheard and/or unacknowledged voices of young men and women who have both distinctive needs and dynamic potential. With introductory chapters describing the constructivist qualitative methodology that underlies each case study, this book will serve as an excellent text for graduate-level research classes. It will also be an outstanding resource for undergraduate leadership and residence life classes, and for training and seminars aimed at student affairs staff. In this important volume, the authors focus on the connections between academic learning and student affairs. Beginning with the premise that academic learning is a critical part of the overall personal development of each student, the authors show how student affairs professionals can work in harmony with their academic colleagues to create a campus milieu that is truly conducive to that development. Such a milieu would offer a rich array of social, athletic, academic, and artistic events, all of which would enrich, enhance, and give deeper meaning to the learning that occurs in the classroom. With its emphasis upon partnership building and interdisciplinary collaboration, this work will be extremely useful to student affairs professionals, college administrators, and faculty members as they work together to design courses and programs that will optimize student learning. Toward Acceptance is a systematic study of the complex issues facing gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons on college campuses. Organized into five distinct sections, Toward Acceptance builds on the content included in Evans and Wall's previous book, Beyond Tolerance: Gays, Lesbians, and Bisexuals on Campus (American College Personnel Association, 1993). The editors begin with an overview of the current research dealing with gay, lesbian and bisexual student issues and then move into a discussion of the organizations promoting awareness and counseling. The latter portion of the book focuses on diversity among the gay and lesbian community and concludes with an examination of how student affairs professionals can continue to be proactive in the area of sexual orientation awareness and support. Complete with a comprehensive collection of resources, Toward Acceptance is an important tool in the greater awareness of problems within the gay and lesbian college community. With today's telecommunication capabilities and advanced information technologies, more and more learners can complete entire academic degree programs without ever setting foot in their institution's main campus. In fact, over 100 American institutions already offer distance learning degree programs or certificate courses, and more are on the way. Promoting Student Learning and Student Development at a Distance meets this growing trend head-on with its definitive examination of contemporary electronic classroom environments. Drawing from institutions all over the United States, the book outlines factors and practices that both directly and indirectly influence the adjustment, learning and development of distance students. It also provides a detailed overview of student affairs responses to distant student needs, stressing the importance of building communities at a distance and using a case study to illustrate the design of distance student services. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, it offers concrete strategies for improvement, such as the creation of four new roles for student development professionals as distance educators: Faculty Development Provider, Academic Liaison, Program Designer, and Outcome Evaluator. As a result, Promoting Student Learning and Student Development at a Distance is more than just a valuable resource to the learner and educator alike. It is an integral ingredient to the future success of tomorrow's student. Co-published with American College Personnel Association.

This book provides a comprehensive guide to technology in student affairs. Many student affairs divisions have introduced advanced information and computer technology into their programs in response to the increasing economic constraints facing American colleges and universities today. Advanced technology in student affairs can reduce overhead costs and increase output despite personnel reductions. This book is designed to assist student affairs practitioners, graduate students, and graduate preparation program faculty members in applying advanced technology to their own programs. Co-published with the American College Personnel Association.

Shifting Paradigms is addressed to all student affairs professionals whose primary focus is student learning. Faculty members in preparation programs, senior administrators and student development educators in residence halls, student unions or career counseling offices will use the ideas presented in different ways. Nevertheless, the book has a common purpose for all readers which is to assert the educational functions of student affairs and services, and to situate student development education solidly within the mission of colleges and universities in the United States. This goal is achieved through examination of some of the diversity issues which are troubling so many campuses today. Diversity is broadly construed to include differences related to race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender and disability status as well as differences in perspective generated by professional roles and philosophy. This book presents a new paradigm for the profession of student affairs and the practice of student development. Co-published with American College Personnel Association.
