Fully revised and refined, this new edition of Institutional Theory and Organizational Change considers the developments in the field of institutional organization theory over the past decade. With each chapter being significantly updated, the book explains what the institutional organization approach means by bringing special attention to how the institutional environment is made up and how organizations are governed by it.

Throughout the book, Staffan Furusten also brings attention to core concepts and arguments within institutional theory and presents them in an easily tangible model for understanding institutional pressure on organizations. New analysis featured in the book includes organizing beyond management and markets, organizational change through re-contextualization and institutional pressure through institutional elements. The examples presented in the book can be used as a navigation tool for additional learning about what the institutional environment consists of and what organizations can do to handle institutional demands.

The second edition of this book is a lucid introduction to contemporary institutional organizational analysis and will be a key resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students in critical management studies, organizational studies, as well as managers and policy makers.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being rapidly introduced into the workplace, creating debate around what AI means for our work and organizations. This book gives grounded counterweight to provocative newspaper headlines by using in-depth case studies of eight organizations’ experiences of implementing and using AI, providing readers with a solid understanding of what is actually happening in practice.

Critical yet constructive, the authors address the challenges of implementing AI: organizing for data, testing and validating, algorithmic brokering, and changing work. Using a combination of existing literature and thorough practical examples, they provide answers to questions such as: What data do I need? When is a system good enough to actually take over tasks? And how can my employees be prepared for working with AI? The book presents four recommendations for WISE management of AI, requiring work-related insights, interdisciplinary knowledge, sociotechnical change processes, and ethical awareness.

Offering insight into the unique characteristics of AI in organizations, this book will be essential reading for scholars of business and management, data analytics and information systems, technology and innovation, and computer science. With practical recommendations for managing the challenges of AI, it will also provide business managers with reflections to improve their own AI development and implementation processes.

Taking a critical approach, this book advances understanding of the social, legal and ethical aspects of digitalisation in law enforcement and the reliance on data-driven tools to predict and prevent crime. It shows how the proliferation of data analytics challenges citizens’ rights, at a time when what counts as ‘safety’ or ‘policing’ is being fundamentally transformed.

Expert contributors examine data driven policing infrastructures across Europe from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, showing how its day-to-day application differs from intended aims, and the consequences of this. With ethnographic case studies from border to traffic control, and from facial recognition to essentially automated data analytics, the authors argue that predictive policing is shaped not only by technology, but also by the imaginaries, policy, power, interest and resistance within policing agencies.

Offering a critical perspective on this topical subject, Critical Perspectives on Predictive Policing is an excellent resource for scholars in critical criminology, critical geography, science and technology studies, and digital and urban studies.

Decision-making is an activity in which everyone is engaged on a more or less daily basis. In this book, Karin Brunsson and Nils Brunsson explore the intricacies of decision-making for individuals and organizations. When, how and why do they make decisions?

The authors identify four distinct ways of reasoning that decision-makers use. The consequences of decisions vary: some promote action, others impede it, and some produce more responsibility than others. With in-depth discussions of rationality, justifications and hypocrisy, the authors show how organizational and political decision processes become over-complicated and difficult for both decision makers and external observers to understand.

Decisions is a concise and easy-to-read introduction to a highly significant and intriguing topic. Based on research from several fields, it provides useful reading and essential knowledge for scholars and students throughout the social sciences and for everyone who wants to understand their own decisions and those of others.

To effectuate is to engage in a specific type of entrepreneurial action. It has special importance for situations where the future is truly unknowable or human agency is of primary importance. In this new and updated edition of the bestselling Effectuation, Saras Sarasvathy explores the theory and techniques of non-predictive control for creating new firms, markets and economic opportunities.

Using empirical and theoretical work done in collaboration with Nobel Laureate Herbert A. Simon, the author employs methods from cognitive science and behavioral economics to develop the notion of entrepreneurial expertise and effectuation. Supportive empirical evidence is provided by the author’s study of 27 entrepreneurs as well as other independent studies. The book then traces the consequences of effectuation for business management, economics and social philosophy. The author finds that effectuators generate constraint-satisfying solutions rather than searching for optimal ones, make rather than find opportunities, and in a deep sense, convert ‘as-if’ propositions into ‘even-if’ ones. The way they accomplish this is the central discussion of the book.

Students and scholars of entrepreneurship will find this path-breaking research of great value. The book’s conclusions will also be of interest to those in the fields of behavioral and evolutionary economics, cognitive science and management.

Praise for the first edition:

‘The concept of effectuation is as subtle as it is profound. On the one hand, it challenges long held beliefs about the nature of cause and effect in social science. On the other hand, it generates a host of new insights about social phenomena. This concept is particularly well suited to analyzing entrepreneurial behavior – behaviors undertaken in settings where the relationship between cause and effect is understood, at best, very poorly.’– Jay B. Barney, The Ohio State University, US

‘Things rarely turn out as we expected or intended. Neither rational choice between well-defined prospects nor commitment to a vision, which can be realised by will power or persuasion, offers a credible representation of much human activity – even the activities of entrepreneurs. But although uncertainty (or unknowledge) is inescapable it may be productively managed. If we understand our present circumstances and some of its possibilities, build constructive relationships with others, and be ready to adjust both our objectives and the means of achieving them in order to take advantage of new contingencies, then we can at least participate in shaping our own future. By taking this perspective Saras Sarasvathy makes entrepreneurship a natural human activity, expressing the limitations and potential of human motivation and human intelligence.’– Brian J. Loasby, University of Stirling, UK

‘In Effectuation Saras Sarasvathy presents a carefully researched and reasoned view of entrepreneurial behavior that both challenges and extends prevailing wisdom in the field. There is little doubt that these ideas will serve as an important foundation for anyone desirous of stimulating positive action in the world. With Effectuation we are equipped to provide a generation of students and managers with the methods to make and find opportunities that create value. . . everywhere.’– Leonard A. Schlesinger, President, Babson College, US

Identifying a crisis for representative democracy in Western European party systems, this essential book studies the widening gap between political parties’ ideological economic Left-Right rhetoric and their increasing convergence on policymaking. Addressing whether these ideologies are converging or diverging, it answers whether these changes are initiated by the parties themselves, aligned with voter demand, or forced by economic globalization.

The crisis of representative democracy in Western Europe is a prevalent issue in comparative politics. This comprehensive study assesses the problems faced by representative democracy by analysing ideological polarization and inter-party conflict in relation to the changing linkage between citizens, parties, and public policies, and the implications this has for representative democracy. Considering both supply-side and demand-side theories, it analyses five major theoretical themes central to the ideological convergence and polarization within party systems, including the cartel party thesis, the median voter theorem, realignment theory, consensus democracy theory, and globalization theory. Going beyond theory, chapters use five decades of empirical research to present new and unique longitudinal and comparative data sets covering eight party systems, ultimately providing a more accurate diagnosis of the vitality of representative democracy in contemporary Western Europe.

Combining in-depth theoretical analysis with empirical research, this comprehensive book will prove invaluable to students and scholars of politics and political science, and policymakers concerned with party systems.

This timely book advances a distinct understanding of the economy as embedded in natural and socio-political processes. It shows how ecological economics, if turned into a discipline grounded in critical realism, institutional theory and sustainability-oriented values, holds significant potential for supporting the development of a sustainable future.Rethinking Ecological Economics aims at developing ecological economics into a coherent professional position. Arild Vatn explores the potential of institutional theory - with its specific understanding of human action and value formation - as the basis for such an endeavor. Economic systems are human constructions and what values are advanced in production and consumption depend on how they are structured. Present institutional structures favor powerful short-term individual interests that endanger the Earth. The book lays the ground for analyzing how long-term common interests can become privileged, and discusses how respecting Earth system boundaries can be ensured through thoroughgoing changes in political and economic institutions. This book is a vital read for scholars and students of environmental and ecological economics, as well as mainstream and heterodox economists interested in environmental challenges. It is also a beneficial resource for practitioners in environmental management and those active in civil society organizations working on conservational issues.
