When the United States took on the building of the Panama Canal in 1904, workers were faced with extremely difficult living conditions. The tropical diseases such as malaria and yellow fever plagued them just as they had the earlier French effort. The housing stock left behind by the French was dilapidated and inadequate.About a hundred sets of beautifully drafted architectural plans left by the French came in handy for locating drains, etc., as the Americans made repairs to existing buildings. Some workers found insect ridden rooms in adjacent towns while others lived in tents or thatched huts near construction sites. Not wanting to endanger the lives of their families, most men left their wives and children behind. What started out as a cesspool of disease and loneliness eventually emerged as a little piece of paradise for its Canal Zone residents. This book tells some of the stories of the various townsites scattered along the fifty miles of the Panama Canal Zone between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. It also shares the fond memories of a few of its residents whose hometowns have changed since the Panama Canal was turned over to Panama on December 31, 1999, and the Canal Zone as they knew it was no more.

The building of the Panama Canal by the United States from 1904 to 1914 at the time was the most significant and monumental engineering achievement the world had ever seen. Its completion, despite incredible obstacles, changed the lives of thousands of people in nations around the world and brought to realization a centuries-old dream of connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The brave and adventurous workers who went to Panama during the construction period faced unimaginable hardships on a daily basis; death was a constant companion as yellow fever, malaria and other tropical diseases took their toll. The family histories contained in this book document the incredible hardships faced by those early construction workers and provide a fascinating glimpse of life in Panama and the former Canal Zone during the American Era of the Panama Canal, from 1904 to 1999.

The transfer of the Panama Canal to the Republic of Panama at the end of 1999 marked the end of a special and unique relationship between the United States and Panama that endured over 96 years. It is important to note the significant roles played in the 20th Century by those two countries in the development of world commerce and to acknowledge the sacrifices and contributions made by the thousands of men and women who participated in this great enterprise. The community of people who contributed to the Canal effort was wide and varied--American and Panamanian, French, West Indian, Spanish, European, Asian, Indian and many other nationalities all came together to help build the Canal. They and many of their descendants who stayed to work in Panama remain imbued with the rich and fascinating cultures of all the participating nations. This incredible cookbook, filled with hundreds of recipes that were used by people of all nationalities during the American Era, represents the merging of all those cultures. It aims to preserve the unique cultural and historical heritage of those dedicated men and women who labored to make the Canal truly one of the World’s greatest accomplishments.

Polio, an infectious disease caused by a virus, became epidemic in the United States in the early to mid-20th century. Recounted in the form of a journal, this story about Edna Black Hindson does a wonderful job making the story of polio come alive. Edna caught polio in 1946, before the height of the epidemic, and the introduction of the vaccine - and well after Franklin Delano Roosevelt turned Warm Springs into the only place focused only on treating poliomyelitis. Thus, her story shows how Americans in the 1940s understood and treated polio, how they were able to use the facilities at Warm Springs and the work it took to help children recover muscle control and the ability to move their limbs that had originally been paralyzed.

On May 1st, 1840, the United Kingdom issued the first postage stamps in the world: the Penny Black and Two Pence Blue. Other countries soon followed: United States (1847), France and Belgium (1849), Spain, Switzerland, Austria and Prussia (1850), and many more in the ensuing years. In Cuba, then a colony of Spain, the first stamp was used in 1855 and it depicted the image of Queen Isabella II, the sovereign of the Spanish Empire at the time.In 1899, after Cuba had become separated from Spain and was under US occupation, the first set of Cuban stamps (printed in the US) included an image of Christopher Columbus, who arrived on the island in 1492; a group of Cuban royal palm trees; the statue of an Indian woman representing the island; a rural scene featuring a field plowed by oxen; and a steamship, highlighting Cuba's lifeline to the rest of the world. Cuba was beginning to tell its own story on stamps. And that has been the practice ever since. As a result, finding Cuba-related images in Cuban postage stamps is to be expected and comes as no surprise to anyone. Much less known and studied is the fact that, from time to time, Cuba somehow shows up in foreign postage stamps as well as in so-called "cinderellas" (resembling stamps, but not issued for postal purposes). It also appears in the design of souvenir sheets outside of the stamps themselves and in the cachets printed on commemorative envelopes and postcards. This is a fascinating story in itself and the one told in this book for the first time.

Madagascar from A to Z (English), Madagasikara manomboke A ka hatramy Z (Vezo), Madagascar de A à Z (French) is the second book in the Madagascar from A to Z series. Following the success of its first installment, which was honored with the prestigious Mary Ellen LoPresti Publication Award for Excellence in Visual Arts Publishing by ARLIS/NA Southeast in 2019, this "Vezo edition" continues the mission of its predecessor, aiming to inspire children with the wonders of Madagascar's unique wildlife while instilling the crucial message of environmental conservation. In 2018, while distributing the first book in Madagascar, members of the Andavadoaka community in the southwest reached out with a special request: they wanted a version of the book that highlighted the unique ecosystems of their region. This area, though arid and heavily deforested, is home to the fourth-largest coral reef in the world—an awe-inspiring yet endangered environment. However, educational resources in Andavadoaka are scarce, particularly in the local Vezo dialect. This "Vezo edition" of Madagascar from A to Z will be a vital educational resource in schools, libraries, and after-school programs, supporting children in developing Vezo, French, and English literacy. Mastering French is essential for accessing higher education and professional opportunities in Madagascar, while English is becoming increasingly important due to the country's growing international tourism and investment. This book helps young readers and provides an invaluable resource for adults in Andavadoaka, many of whom are working to develop the region's ecotourism industry.Ultimately, the Madagascar from A to Z series aims to empower the next generation of Malagasy children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to succeed in a rapidly changing world while fostering a deep appreciation for their country's extraordinary natural heritage.
