The horror film has always been populated by male monsters, many of which do carry out monstrous acts of violation, rape and castration. The horror film is also filled with male monsters who grow fur, change shape, bleed and give birth. What is it that defines male monstrosity? How does the male monster differ from the female monster? In contrast to the monstrous-feminine, the male monster is almost always defined in close relation to its sexual other, that is, the male monster is a feminised creature linked to woman, nature and the animal. Woman is the prototype, the male monster her impression.

Questions of institutional abuse have been at the centre of numerous royal commissions, inquiries and reviews of the clergy, the police and defence forces over the past decade. This scrutiny has highlighted how those organisations foster forms of violence and violation. One of their principal characteristics is that the culture of abuse and its perpetration is largely the work of men. In Warrior Soldier Brigand, Ben Wadham and James Connor argue that three pillars shape the patterns of abuse in the Australian Defence Force: martial masculinities, military exceptionalism and fraternity. Historically, the military has been an almost exclusively male domain, but since the Vietnam War it has become an all-volunteer force and more culturally diverse, a change that has proven to be profoundly challenging, and one the ADF has not always readily welcomed nor sufficiently addressed. While the ADF may train and accommodate some of the best military personnel in the world, it has not resolved the use of that violent potential against its own.Exploring the fundamental paradox that underpins abuse in the military - an organisation of and for violence -Wadham and Connor report on the shifting landscape of the ADF since 1969, describing military institutional abuse across the decades and asking the question: to what extent can an authoritarian institution liberalise?

This powerful examination of the effects of hyperconsumerism on contemporary life provides a comprehensive look at how choices affect the balance between work and life in society. Using past experiences, the author explores issues that concern many and asks the question, Is it possible to have too much choice? With detail and insight, the guide analyses a world full of information at the click of a search engine, where libraries are unused, travellers see the world but never speak another language and employees work on short-term contracts never knowing their colleagues. Passionate and powerful, ""This Restless Life"" is a gripping combination of memoir and social critique, looking without blame at the effects of hypercapitalism on Generation Y.

In 2010 the Australian Government decided that it would not propose a Human Rights Act, despite the relevant recommendation of the 2008-09 National Human Rights Consultation. Instead, it introduced a Human Rights Framework comprising several measures to enhance human rights protection, including the Human Rights (Parliamentary Scrutiny) Act 2011. The scrutiny regime under that Act was designed to ensure rights would be given due consideration before Commonwealth legislation was passed. The Act created a unique 'bipartite dialogue' system, involving a formal interchange on rights compatibility between the executive and Parliament, while excluding the courts. This set the Commonwealth apart from jurisdictions such as the ACT, Victoria, New Zealand and the UK, which have statutory rights instruments administered by their courts. The book presents a detailed study of all aspects of the scrutiny regime, and compares the regime with its closest counterparts overseas. In assessing the regime's impact, it argues that a system in which the executive and Parliament are responsible both for protecting rights and for remedying rights breaches is neither more legitimate nor more effective than one involving all three branches of government. Accordingly, it calls for strengthening reforms.

Gerald Murnane is one of Australia's most celebrated authors whose experimental and deeply idiosyncratic style has attracted rave reviews, including profiles in The New Yorker and The New York Times. Murnane's writing combines fiction with autobiography and returns obsessively to his particular and uncommon interests: horse-racing, marbles, stained glass, Catholic iconography, hermetic writers, and the Australian landscape. His fiction offers a window into what it means to be human, and how books and reading shape our self-understanding. Murnane examines the writer's recent work to explain both its significance to Australian literature and provide readers with a deeper understanding of his complex and self-referential fiction.

Throughout the past century, Melbourne has spawned its fair share of notorious criminals some more infamous than others. In this compelling and comprehensive book, Britain s top true crime writer James Morton and former barrister and legal broadcaster Susanna Lobez take you on a tour of Melbourne s criminal past, visiting Australia s favourite larrikin Squizzy Taylor, career criminals Chopper Read and the Pettingill family, as well as chronicling the long-running Painters and Dockers Union and recent Melbourne gang wars. Along the way, tales of Melbourne's talented standover men, contract killers, robbers, conmen, brothel keepers, biker gangs, drug dealers and corrupt cops offer an extraordinary insight into this colourful and mysterious world.

In February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a fellow East Slav state with much shared history. Mark Edele, a world authority on the history of the Soviet Union, explains why and how this conflict came about. He considers competing historical claims and arguments with authority and lucidity. His primary focus, however, is on the different paths taken by these two former members of the Soviet Union. Since the implosion of that state in 1991, Ukraine has developed a vibrant, if often troubled, democracy. For an increasingly dictatorial Russian political elite, including but not limited to Vladimir Putin, Ukraine has appeared more and more threatening. Humiliated by the degradation of Russia's international standing, feeling betrayed by an expanding NATO and anxious about democratic revolutions in the former Soviet space, Putin and his allies have increasingly retreated into a resentful ultra-nationalism. Dreams of past imperial glory stand in place of any attempt to solve the problems of the present.

This updated edition includes a new development in Kate and Gustav's love story. When Kate died in 1916, she was buried in her family's plot in Devonport, Tasmania, and Gustav, who lived another 16 years and died in 1932, was buried in a tomb in Cradle Valley. Kate's body was exhumed and cremated, and her ashes were placed with her husband's on 1 February 2024.He was an Austrian immigrant; she came from Tasmania. He grew up beside the Carinthian Alps; she climbed mountains when few women dared. Their honeymoon glimpse of Cradle Mountain lit an urge that filled their waking hours. Others might have kept this splendour to themselves, but Gustav Weindorfer and Kate Cowle sensed the significance of a place they sought to share with the world. When they stood on the peak in the heat of January 1910, they imagined a national park for all.Kindred. A Cradle Mountain Love Story traces the achievements of these unconventional pioneers and their fight to preserve a piece of wilderness. Neither lived to see their vision fully realised: the World Heritage listed landscape is now visited by 250,000 people each year. Award-winning journalist Kate Legge tells this remarkable story of the creation of the Cradle Mountain sanctuary through the characters at its heart.

T.M. Fitzgerald and George Munster produced the paper each fortnight from 1958 until 1972, when its name and some of its spirit went into the Nation Review. The journal attracted contributors already well known, among them W. MacmahonBall, Manning Clark, Max Harris and Cyril Pearl, and discovered writers such as Sylvia Lawson, Brian Johns and Bob Ellis. Robert Hughes became an art critic in its pages, and Harry Kippax the country's most respected theatre reviewer. Some people who wrote pseudonymously are here unmasked for the first time. This book is for old readers who still miss Nation, and for the young who never knew it. K.S. Inglis, himself a contributor, has chosen the items and written a history of the journal, to make a retrospective exhibition, a chronicle of the time, and a bedside or poolside book for the 1990s.

For much of the 20th century, idealist accounts sought to represent culture as ""pure"" consciousness, while materialist accounts represented it as a secondary ""effect"" of some other material reality. From the 1970s, however, new theoretical paradigms have sought rather to establish the materiality of culture itself. The term ""cultural materialism"", coined by Raymond Williams, describes this emergent body of cultural theory. ""Cultural Materialism"" is both an introduction and a contribution to cultural theory. It situates cultural materialism in relation to earlier paradigms such as literary humanism and Marxism. It explains how the new paradigm has been applied to important areas such as cultural studies, media studies and literary studies. It explains the more significant differences between British and French variants in the paradigm: Raymond Williams, E.P.Thompson and the Birmingham School in Britain, Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault in France.

Senator Edward Millen, who conveived and nurtured Australia's repatriation system, described repatriation of returned service personnel as just as much 'an emanation of the heart' as a cause 'worthy of the last shilling'. It had been a concern to Australians since the Boer War, but it was not until 1918 that an entire government department (now the Department of Veterans' Affairs) came into being to address this concern.Drawing on a wealth of Departmental archives and othe unpublished material, Clem Lloyd and Jacqui Rees have provided a frank account of an institution that, from soldier settlement schemes to Agent Orange, has responded to the needs of returned service people in a generous and open-hearted way. In a series of chronological and thematic chapters the authors explore the many functions and practices of 'Repat'—from hospitals to scholarships, training programmes to home loans—culminating in an examination of the Department of Veterans' Affairs in the 1980s. The book gives rare insights into successive ministers and prime ministers, senior administrators and front-line staff, returned service personnel and their families. In the course of its 75-year history, the activities of 'Repat' have touched the lives of almost everyone, yet, until now, the makers of policy and those who implemented it have been largely unknown and invisible.Taking in subjects such as Australia's relations with her military allies, the relationship of the Department to other welfacre policies, and the changing nature of Australian society since World War I, the book is a fascinating account of one of Australia's most enguring concerns.

Sir Redmond Barry was the pre-eminent figure in Melbourne of the middle years of last century. A Supreme Court judge for thirty years, he was the founding and sustaining force behind the University of Melbourne, the Supreme Court Library, the Public Library, the National Gallery and the Museum. As social and cultural benefactor, he stands alone.Paradox pervaded his life. While seen by many as a hidebound, even villainous judge, his trust in the rule of law underpinned, for example, an unusually sympathetic and active response to the Aboriginal people. Yet fear of losing social standing and his Irish family's esteem blinkered him to injustice on his own doorstep. The story of his unacknowledged relationship of thirty years with Louisa Barrow, and of their four illegitimate children, is perplexing and often painful in the telling. This important biography is long overdue.

Many of the most spectacular and interesting astronomical objects are found in the magnificent southern skies. Professor E. J. Hartung first produced a comprehensive and highly respected guide for southern observers in 1968. The book was thoroughly revised, expanded in 1995, enhancing its essential character as an indispensable source of information for the active observer of the night sky.Nearly 200 objects are illustrated in black and white and much new background material has been included about the constellations and celestial coordinate systems as well as a more modern description of the stars, nebulae and galaxies. New tables include a 'southern Messier' list of objects. The authors' passion for their subject makes this a unique and inspirational book.

It wasn't enough for Melba to become one of the greats of the Golden Age of Grand Opera. She wanted to be the greatest. her glorious voice took her to the top; her ruthless determination to overthrow any rival kept her there long after the voice had begun to decline. Revealed in this relentlessly candid yet sympathetic study is Melba the drama queen, the monstrous prima donna, the canny businesswoman, the generous and kindly friend, the unique star who refused to fade. 'There are lots of duchesses but only one Melba' — Nellie Melba

Joseph Mason, an English agricultural labourer, was convicted and transported for taking part in mass protests against the introduction of threshing machines, which were threatening to destroy the livelihood of English rural workers. Joseph was unusual among labourers in being a fluent writer and a voracious reader. His manuscript, only recently discovered, is published here for the first time. In it, he vividly describes life on the frontier, his encounters with Aboriginal people, and the flora and fauna of the bush. He tells of the living and working conditions of assigned convicts, and early horticultural and farming practices. The description of his explorations along the Nepean River captures the dramatic landscape of the gorge so accurately that it could serve as a guide for the modern bushwalker. This is a fresh and unique first-person account of the convict experience-a new and invaluable addition to the primary sources of Australian colonial history.

Mark Verstandig's compelling epic spans pre-Holocaust Jewish culture in Eastern Europe and its post-war reformation in Australia. His personal story interweaves the vast forces of politics and history with intimate details of the shtetl-from the pre-war intricacies of Galician society and the textures of a traditional Jewish religious education, to the agonizing contradictions of Polish-Jewish relations and the complexities of post-war Jewish politics. His account of the displaced persons camps where 'transit Jews' awaited their chance to emigrate is a significant contribution to a little-known aspect of post-war history. With his gift for observation and his acute powers of analysis, Mark Verstandig has achieved the rare feat of telling the story of his people through its own history. Part autobiography, part Holocaust literature, part sociological analysis, I Rest My Case is a fine achievement.

A Forester's Log is a unique forest story, told from a forester's viewpoint-the view of John La Gerche, one of the first generation of foresters in Victoria, who managed the Ballarat-Creswick State Forest in the late nineteenth century.La Gerche's Letter Books and Pocket Books have survived to provide a rare insight into a bailiff-forester's burdens in the 1880s and 1890s. As a bailiff, he daily had to confront prop cutters and woodcarters, 'scamps and vagabonds' who constantly defied forest regulations. His pioneering work helped shape today's forested landscape around the Central Victorian goldfields town of Creswick, 'the home of forestry'.In the detailed correspondence between this amateur forester and his bureaucratic masters lies the human story of an ordinary yet remarkable man, endeavouring to strike a fair balance between the competing demands of local woodcutters and distant officials. Angela Taylor reads between the lines to create a beautifully perceptive portrait of a vanishing character type-the truly committed public servant. A Forester's Log is an illuminating and charming book which will appeal to a wide range of readers, both urban and rural, including those interested in conservation and landscape heritage.

The Rocks is Sydney's earliest surviving neighbourhood. Grace Karskens builds up a vivid picture of the lives of its earliest white inhabitants. A wealth of historical documents, pictures, maps and archaeological evidence allows her to recover the words and gestures, tastes and habits, aspirations and fears, of the dealers, publicans, labourers, artisans, watermen, washerwomen, servants and prostitutes who lived there. What sort of town did these people make? What did it look like? How did they treat their neighbours? And what of other human relations-how did men and women behave sexually? What did they think was 'moral' behaviour? What were their marriages like? How did they bring up their children? Grace Karskens shows it was a place very different from the usual images of a brutal 'gaol colony'- it was, rather, a preindustrial town, a face-to-face society, marked more by movement and opportunity, dialogue and negotiation than by coercion, discipline and punishment.

The story of white Australians born in this land before 1850; most were the children of convicts, had no access to land and no education, and the free settlers generally treated them as second-rate.The native-born . . . have walked constantly with me, but only as shadows. In libraries and manuscript rooms, in the faded pages of newspapers and journals, in the lectures of my colleagues or conversations with others, they have been there, but shyly, and rarely did they speak for themselves. Often I thought that they scarcely knew who they were and, if they did, whether they were allowed to know they were Australians and whether they were ever encouraged by those born elsewhere to think of themselves as Australians. This beautifully written, absorbing and thoughtful book tells the story of the first white Australians to be born in this land. Born here before 1850, most were the children of convicts. They had no access to land and no education, and the free settlers generally treated them with contempt, as second-rate citizens.John Molony was curious to discover how they thought…

The Murray is a book about landscape and fish, about memory and concepts, about imagination and desire. Through a complex interweaving of history, poetry, art and individual memories, Paul Sinclair has created an original and subtly conceived work, offering imaginative space to think about land and water in new ways. The focus is on shifts and changes: the brief heyday of the riverboats and their transformation into a tourist attraction; the decline of the mighty Murray cod and the rise of the European carp; the alteration of flow patterns and species; the changing fortunes of the river towns. The Murray offers a unique picture of Australia's major river.

Tall, sun-bronzed, hardy. Resourceful, independent, egalitarian. Scornful of authority, loyal to their mates. These mythical characteristics of the Anzac 'diggers' are central to our idea of what it is to be Australian. But did the soldiers themselves fit the stereotype? How closely does the myth match the reality? This penetrating study strips away celebratory generalisations and measures the Anzac legend against the actual experiences of one battalion that fought at Gallipoli and on the Western Front in World War I. The diaries and letters written by soldiers of the 1st Battalion reveal attitudes, insights, comments and criticisms that qualify and even contradict the Anzac legend. In Dinkum Diggers, Dale James Blair compares these first-hand accounts by front-line infantrymen with unit diaries, operational records, service and repatriation records, as well as with interviews with family members and statistical analysis, to present a well-rounded picture of the complexities of the 1st Battalion's experience. By narrowing the focus of Australian war experience to a single battalion, he demonstrates nuances and subtleties, showing how the men viewed and reacted to their own officers and how both officers and men behaved in combat. He follows these war-damaged soldiers into civilian life, where they mostly kept quiet as conservative forces worked to enshrine and sanitise Australia's sacrifice. This book makes a notable contribution to revisionist studies about World War I. It is a patient, thorough and scholarly demolition job on the Anzac legend, a reality check on back-slapping triumphalism and the glorification of war.

Infectious disease has threatened life and social order throughout human history, inducing deep and pervasive fear. Fairfield Hospital began life in 1890 as a fever hospital, treating the colonists for typhoid, diphtheria, cholera and smallpox. As the Queen's Memorial Infectious Diseases Hospital from 1919, it grappled with epidemics of polio and scarlet fever. The new Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital, built in 1948, became one of the world's foremost centres for the research and treatment of infectious diseases, especially HIV/AIDS. It was closed in 1996 amid controversy, protest and distress. The combined expertise of the Fairfield Hospital team is now scattered. But Anderson, in gathering together the fruits of their knowledge, experience and skill, has ensured that the story of a remarkable and much-loved hospital is not lost to us.

Arab people first came to Australia in the late nineteenth century. Today more than half a million Australians claim some form of Arab ancestry. They are a diverse group, both socially and economically. New South Wales, for example, appointed Australia's first Lebanese Governor, while at the same time it was labelling groups of economically deprived young people as 'Lebanese gangs'. Victoria's Premier, Steve Bracks, comes from a Lebanese background. Melbourne has an important Arab business community, while newly arrived Arab immigrants have one of the highest rates of unemployment in the country.Arab-Australians Today raises important questions about immigration, settlement, marginalisation and participation in Western societies. It discusses the way early Arab immigrants were received in Australia and talks about contemporary issues of participation in the Australian political process. It examines the lives of diverse groups of people, ranging from entrepreneurs to Arab women activists to unemployed youth. It analyses issues ranging from the ways Arab-Australians grow to call Australia home, to the moral panic created around Arab youth and criminality. The book offers non-Arab-Australians a way to better understand the Arab presence in Australia. It is also an invitation for Arab-Australians to reflect on the history of their settlement in Australia, as well as on the current experience of more recent immigrants.

Addicts are generally regarded with either pity or grave disapproval. But is being addicted to something necessarily bad? We categorise addiction as unnatural, diseased and self-destructive. We demonise pleasure and desire, and view the addict as physically and morally damaged. In asserting that the 'wrongness' of addiction is not fixed or indeed obvious, Helen Keane presents a refreshing challenge to more conventional accounts of addiction. She also investigates the notion that people can be addicted to eating, love and sex, just as they are to drugs and alcohol. What's Wrong with Addiction? shows that most of our ideas about addiction take certain ideals of health and normality for granted. It exposes strains in our society's oppositions between health and disease, between the natural and the artificial, between order and disorder, and between self and other.

Confronting Cruelty investigates the history of the detection and treatment of child abuse in Australia through the lens of the Victorian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children - now the Children's Protection Society (CPS) - from 1896 to the end of the 20th century. This book explores the inner world of a child protection agency within the outer world of the broader historical context and changes in both child protection policy and the social constructions of child abuse.

Jim Cairns, former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, is a familiar sight around the markets of Melbourne, seated at a card table stacked with copies of his latest book. It's an unlikely occupation for a man who was once the major thinker and driving force behind the ideals and policies of Australia's most reformist government. In this mature and sophisticated biography, Paul Strangio reveals a consistent thread running through the apparent contradictions of Cairns's career. He explains how a policeman turned into a counter-culture guru; how an opponent of capitalism became Minister for Trade; how a devoted husband could feel 'a kind of love' for Juni Morosi. In this highly readable and carefully researched book, Strangio argues that Cairns' contributions to public life have been seriously understimated. Drawing on a rich range of archival and oral sources, and recounting many fascinating anecdotes, this is a masterly portrait of one of those rare people who never stop in their quest for truth.

From Camp to Queer traces the history of a group of Australians in the 1970s who posed some radical questions. Who are we as homosexuals? Who might we become? How are we to act politically? In short, how are we to live? In lively prose, Reynolds looks at how these men and women undertook what is now a universal task: the re-invention of the self in an era of uncertainty and change, where old answers no longer suffice, and sexuality is a core preoccupation.

This text brings together a range of information on who Australian students are, what they want from school, how well they think their schools work, what subjects they study, how well they succeed and where they end up.

The terrorist attacks on the United States on 11 September 2001 were profoundly shocking to the international community. New dilemmas now face policy-makers increasingly aware of the inadequacy of existing frameworks for dealing with them, or how to find the answer to the vexed questions: Can terrorism be justified, and, if not, what are the grounds for condemning it? Is 'one man's terrorist another's freedom fighter'? What are the morally appropriate responses to terrorism-diplomatically, militarily and ethically? Terrorism and Justice brings together authors with different attitudes and original perspectives on ethical and practical justifications for terrorism, and different conceptual frameworks for assessing and justifying responses to terrorism - some defend the immunity of non-combatants, others argue that traditional distinctions between combatants and non-combatants do not
