From the heyday of the Grand Tour to the arrival of railways and air travel writers have been drawn to Florence, a beautiful city with a unique history of art, culture and cruelty, the home of Leonardo da Vinci and Machiavelli. In recording their experiences they have left a wealth of writing which is explored in this book. ‘Florence itself is incomparable, and the distinguished visitors who have drawn inspiration here have added layers of enjoyment to the modern traveler's experience of its streets and monuments. FLORENCE HAS WON MY HEART is a delightful vademecum for anyone who wants to understand how and why the city has enchanted the world for centuries.’ – Jonathan Galassi, Chairman and Executive Editor at Farrar, Straus and Giroux‘This fascinating account of visitors to Florence focusses on English and Americans’ love affair with this extraordinary city. Several ended up residing there permanently, the richness of their Anglo-Florentine lives almost rivalling the complexity of the works of art that drew them to the city. The narrative ends with the death in 1994 of Sir Harold Acton, in his parents' magnificent Villa La Pietra where he had been born. Mark Roberts provides an excellent account of Acton, based on unparalleled knowledge both of the Actons’ archive, and of the man himself. Roberts chose to remain in Florence, becoming the Librarian and a lecturer at the British Institute, where he is a living legend. He therefore writes from within his subject, both as a Florentine and as an Englishman. In the 21st century he personally epitomizes the great tradition he describes so well in this book.’ – Edward Chaney, author of The Evolution of the Grand Tour‘Himself a Florentine who knows the city inside out, Mark Roberts tells the stories of over a hundred English and American writers who have lived in Florence since 1750. The inspiration they drew from the city's landscapes, art and people shows that Florence was as much part of English literature as Oxford or Cambridge. A triumph. Take it when you next go.’ – Philip Mansel, author of King of the World: the Life of Louis XIV

What good is persuasion if no oneis paying attention? Why Just Stop Oil's resolute young campaigners chose civildisobedience. The climate crisis deepens with terrifying predictability. Meanwhile, manyof the young campaigners who seek to wake us up to the truth of this, throughpeaceful direct action, are silenced and stuck in prison. They do not see themselves as brave heroes, nor as dangerousextremists; they do care about science and the role it should play ingovernment policy. As their personal profiles in the book reveal, their civildisobedience is driven by desperation, but motivated primarily by love - forthose who have already felt the impact of a radically changing climate and forthose whose lives will be blighted in the future, often in countries which havedone least to cause the crisis.Misrepresented and often reviled in the media, Just Stop Oil and other'Radical Flank' environmental campaigners will be deservedly recognised infuture, just as the Suffragettes have been, for the crucially important rolethey continue to play in the climate movement. Theirs is a generationsystematically betrayed by politicians. And by all of us who allow this tocontinue, on our watch, year after year.Six years on from the biggest climate protest in history in 2019, ledby Greta Thunberg, young people remain largely shut out of ever moredysfunctional political processes, able only to beg for the scraps of a 'justtransition' that would at best mitigate the coming devastation, much of whichis now unavoidable.Just Stop Oil stopped active campaigning in March 2025. But for mostof its remarkable young activists, the work of civil resistance goes on. Theycontinue to shoulder the burden of attempting to secure change in a worldlocked into a deeply damaging status quo.Jonathon Porritt spent a year working with twenty-six Just Stop Oilcampaigners to co-create Love, Anger & Betrayal, driven by a fiercecommitment to Intergenerational Justice. The campaigners feel part of theinterlinked chain of humanity, empathising more powerfully with futuregenerations than so many of us, even when many of them may well decide never tohave children of their own.

Biddesden House is the Guinness family home. It was bought in 1931 by Bryan Guinness (Lord Moyne) and his first wife Diana Mitford. It was here that Mirabel Guinness found her inspiration for this cookery book. As she points out in her introduction, there are often at least twenty people to lunch at Biddesden. This is not surprising with such a large family: she is the youngest of nine brothers and sisters who all grew up there. Charmingly illustrated by Roland Pym, the book is a compilation of recipes contributed by the whole Guinness family, ranging from the amateur to the professional and reflecting Biddesden life from the nursery tea to the dinner party. The book shows how best to enjoy the familiar ingredients of English country cooking.

WHAT dire offence from am rous causes springs What mighty contests rise from trivial things... In a world apparently light-years away from the Me Too movement huge offence was caused in the early 18th-century when Lord Petre cut a lock of society beauty Arabella Fermor s hair, provoking scandal and disgrace. Pope wrote the poem in an effort to reconcile Miss Fermor, immortalised as Belinda. The mock-heroic poem, light, elegant and witty, was an immediate success and remains a classic of English literature. Roland Pym completed the illustrations in the 1980s, but they have not been published until now.

A collection of letters discovered by chance in an old trunk, accompanied by cartoons and news clippings: the great historical interest of this collection gradually became apparent. The letters provide a vivid, first-hand account of life in the office of Sir Edwin Lutyens as told by those who worked there. The letters, comical and entertaining, were written by the young architects who had served in Lutyens' office as architectural assistants or apprentices. Some of these young men went on to have very distinguished careers of their own - Sir Basil Spence, for example. Others might be more obscure, but all share and describe the great sense of fun that was had working for the great architect. The letters are illustrated with cartoons of the period, making this book a unique and fascinating historical record, of great appeal to anyone interested in Lutyens.

Salvation is the story of Ralph Sebright, who as a boy narrowly escaped death in the Atlantic at the hands of a German U-Boat...

Dapper, dynamic, overarchingly ambitious, Guido Schmidt was Austria’ s youngest and most controversial Foreign Minister. Corresponding secretly with Gö ring while betraying Axis secrets to Sir Robert Vansittart at the British Foreign Office, Schmidt ducked and weaved across a European landscape of increasing menace and treachery. Accompanying the Austrian Chancellor to Berchtesgaden in February 1938, Schmidt alone kept his nerve and negotiated an agreement with Ribbentrop which neutralised many of Hitler’ s bullying demands. When Hitler invaded Schmidt was one of the very few Austrian ministers to escape the clutches of the SS. In a curious gesture of protection, Gö ring sent a plane to Vienna to rescue him from the wrath of the Austrian Nazis. This enigmatic move by Hitler’ s greatest of paladins came back to haunt Schmidt after the war when he was put on trial for high treason. Acquitted in 1947 for “ lack of evidence” , Schmidt’ s reputation never recovered. Accessing invaluable family papers hitherto unseen by any historian, Richard Bassett has produced a fascinating account of an important personality who played a pivotal role in the European crisis in the run-up to the Second World.
