The history of Aborigines in Van Diemen’s Land is long. The first Tasmanians lived in isolation and against almost insurmountable odds for as many as 300 generations after the flooding of Bass Strait. This broad-ranging book is a comprehensive and critical account of that epic survival up to the present day.Starting from antiquity, the book examines the devastating arrival of Europeans and subsequent colonisation, warfare and exile. It emphasises the regionalism and separateness, a consistent feature of Aboriginal life since time immemorial. Carefully researched using extensive archaeological and documentary evidence, this important book fills a long-time gap in Tasmanian history.

In this provocative book, Peter Timms asks confronting questions. Why is contemporary art so in thrall to spruikers and promoters, and why do their extravagant claims so rarely match the reality? Why does the market have such power, and how does it dictate the sort of art we are allowed to see? Why are art schools, museums and the media apparently so eager to fall in line with commercial expectations?

From jitterbugging to ""Big Brother"", from the introduction of television to the rise of file-sharing, ""Friday on our Minds"" explores the ways popular culture has developed and changed in Australia. This book considers film, television, sport, music and leisure in relation to each other, rather than as stand-alone cultural forms. The book also pays significant attention to issues of consumption and audience engagement with popular culture through case studies. It is written by an award-winning author who was a presenter on the ABC TV history series ""Rewind"". In order to understand the massive social and cultural changes that took place in Australia since the end of World War II, Michelle Arrow examines popular culture through three main lenses: consumerism and the development of a mass consumer society; the impact of technological change; and, the ways that popular culture contributes to, and articulates, individual and collective identities. She provides an integrated account of changes in a range of popular culture forms, meanings, production and consumption.

In the 1950s the Dutch promised the people of West Papua (the western half of New Guinea) self-determination and eventual independence. But in 1963 Indonesia took control of the territory with the blessing of the US, the UN and Australia. In a tragic clash between two very different cultures over the next 40 years the Papuans have refused - just like the East Timorese - to 'bow to the inevitable': Indonesian occupation and assimilation into that country This book reviews the long guerilla struggle of the Organisasi Papua Merdeka (OPM) for a Free Papua, and traces the rise of a non-violent independence movement alongside it, the Papua Council, following the fall from power of Indonesia's military dictator, General Suharto, in 1998. The book is based on the author's extensive field research. It places the Papuan struggle in a context of failing reform within Indonesia and a politically reviving military: the feared and loathed TNI. More than ever, Indonesia needs West Papua's resource treasures - the giant Freeport copper mine, and BP's huge new natural gas field in Bintuni Bay - and the Indonesian army is ruthlessly 'defending' and exploiting these projects. However, the Papuans are equally determined to win independence. King argues passionately and persuasively that international intervention to resolve Papua's plight is essential: Australia, the US and other countries must act in concert through the UN once more, as they did in East Timor. Indonesians must be persuaded that their best interests lie not in a 'security approach' but in dialogue and negotiation with the Papuans and other disenchanted minorities.

The September 11 attacks on the US stunned Australians, as well as people all over the world, and the consequences have been far-reaching for both the West and the Muslim world. The subsequent War on Terror and its extension to Iraq, assaults on Muslims in many Western countries, and the recent bombing in Jakarta have brought to the fore many issues deserving attention and analysis. These include the prospects of conflict and co-operation between the Muslim world and the West including Australia and the future of Muslim communities in Australia. Islam and the West addresses these and other issues from a specifically Australian perspective.

Peace marches, protest demonstrations and campaigns for or against every cause imaginable have long been part of the Australian social and political landscape. This lively book blends the voices and experiences of insiders involved in particular causes with a bigger picture that analyses successes and failures, communication of ideas and social and political impacts. It features fascinating interviews with some of Australia's best-known activists from the environmental, women's, peace, student, refugee and Aboriginal movements. With passion and insight, these people articulate their unique form of 'practical knowledge'. ""Activist Wisdom"" connects this knowledge to key social movement histories and theories, providing an insight into the world of activism and the tensions that are an inevitable part of most social movements. ""Activist Wisdom"" is a landmark contribution to our understanding of contemporary social movements in Australia and elsewhere.

Vortex Cities to Sustainable Cities: Australia's Urban Challenge is about Australian cities and their prospects for sustainability. In nature, a vortex is an irresistible force, a whirlpool (usually of water or air) that violently captures and then destroys virtually everything in its path. The book's title makes a clear analogy between Austraila's major cities as they operate now, and the implications this has for their future - as well as the future of the country. The book looks specifically at the environmental prospects of Australian largest cities - all the mainland capitals, including Canberra and Newcastle - and discusses their histories and the planning ideas that have shaped their development. Vortex Cities to Sustainable Cities contains chapters on population and demography, air quality, water quality, water availability, transport and biodiversity. These chapters include many new ideas that will help to make our cities more sustainable. That said, this book is not just about cities. It argues that having sustainable cities will be vital in reducing negative impacts of urban expansion on our rural and wild environments, too. Vortex Cities to Sustainable Cities will stimulate debate among many Australians about the kind of future we want for our country. It will engage planners and politicians, academics and activists, teachers and students, and many interested and informed ordinary Australians.

The underlying concern of this book is the issue of balancing the needs for national security with individual rights and freedoms. Hocking argues that current security legislation compromises the separation of powers and individual legal and political rights.

Looking at a period of history 22 to 2.5 million years ago, ""Hominid Adaptations"" synthesises the information currently available on hominid palaeobiology. It examines the record of the Neogene fossil apes: their adaptive trends, their morphologies and their relationships to the environment; their evolution and in many cases their extinctions. In so doing, it provides original insights into the evolution of our most distant and our most immediate fossil ancestors.

The book addresses some fundamental and profound questions such as: Are GM foods safe to eat? What do consumers think about GM foods and, alternatively, organic produce? What are the real risks of genetic pollution? And is it appropriate to delete a supposed gene for sadness? 'Recoding Nature' challenges the assumptions of those preparing the world for a 'recoded' DNA future. Recoding Nature is at the cutting edge of critical reflection about the 'biotechnology revolution', the redesign of nature through genetically modified plants, animals and even designer humans. The book addresses some fundamental and profound questions: Are GM foods safe to eat? What do consumers think about GM foods and, alternatively, organic produce? What are the real risks of genetic pollution? Is it appropriate to delete a supposed gene for sadness? Where did the idea of the DNA code come from, and how is it shaping thought for a genetics future? Why has commercial release of GM canola been approved when all canola-growing States have declared moratoriums? Does the biomedical approach really offer the way forward in health care? Are there genes for crime, or is this just an illusion? What about the prospects of corporate bioprospecting among Indigenous peoples? And why have large grass-roots movements in Asia surfaced to contest the notion that GM foods will feed the hungry? In fourteen essays by Australian and New Zealand writers critiquing the new biology, and with a stimulating foreword by Mae-Wan Ho - the UK scientist leading a global attack on genetic engineering as 'bad science' - Recoding Nature challenges the assumptions of those preparing the world for a 'recoded' DNA future.

Australia is world-renowned for its often extraordinary and unique natural environment including many of its plants and animals. This beautiful little book highlights an often overlooked, but just as remarkable, aspect of our natural world: Australias fungi. Many are brightly coloured, some fluorescent; some are elegant, others squat; some are fragrant, more still are highly toxic. This field guide showcases many of these species in all their splendour.

This title is a book for a general readershiop including the ever growing peace and justice constituencies around the world. From the Swan River to the Hawkesbury, and from the sticky Arnhem Land mangrove to the soft green hills of Tasmania, this book describes the major conflicts fought on the Australian frontier to 1838. Based on extensive research and using overseas frontier wars to add perspective to the Australian experience, The Australian Frontier Wars 1788-1838 will change our view of Australian history forever. Over the last thirty years, Australians have become increasingly aware that violence accompanied the colonisation of their continent. Historians have shown that the armed conflicts between Aborigines and British settlers and soldiers, though small in scale and sporadic in nature, can truly be described as 'wars'. However, a gap remains at the heart of our understanding of the Australian frontier: the actual warfare, and the weapons and tactics used to fight it, remain poorly understood. The Australian Frontier Wars is the first book-length military history of frontier conflict in Australia. Covering the first fifty years of British occupation in Australia, this book examines in detail how both sides fought on the frontier. It shows how Aborigines developed a new form of warfare that diffe

Looks at the complex interrelationships between human culture and the nature. Covering the period from the beginning of agriculture right up to the present day, it focuses on issues relating to human health and well-being and the state of our natural environment. From his vast survey, author Stephen Boyden draws some key conclusions critical to the future of humanity.

How might we think and talk about indigenous philosophy? Why has Aboriginal knowledge not been given the status of philosophical knowledge, but treated by whites rather as culture or history? There is a quarrel about whose antiquity is at the foundation of Australian culture, and why contemporary forms of Aboriginality are marginal to Australia's modernity. These are the starting points for the essays contained in Stephen Muecke's original and challenging book.

This work explores some of Australia's major ethical challenges. Written in the midst of rapid social and environmental change and in a time of uncertainty and division, it offers powerful stories and arguments for ethical choice and commitment. The focus is on reconciliation between Indigenous and Settler' peoples, and with nature.
