John Muir agreed in 1881 to sail aboard the Corwin, whose fruitless mission it was to search for the missing scientific research vessel Jeannette, which itself became icebound while exploring the distant and mysterious Wrangell Land in the higher latitudes of the Arctic. This cruise would afford Muir the opportunity to examine evidence of glaciation along the arctic coastlines of Siberia and Alaska and the harmonious lifestyle of Inuits and Chukchis, which was in the midst of disruption from the intrusions of the civilized South. “John Muir was certainly as concerned for the potential loss of marvelous arctic cultures as he was for our continent’s vanishing wilderness. In this sense, THE CRUISE OF THE CORWIN truly deserves our attention, especially in light of all that is happening in the Arctic today.” –Richard Fleck

The Citadel of Fear (1918) is a science fiction novel by Francis Stevens. Using her well-known pseudonym, Gertrude Barrows Bennett published some of the twentieth century’s greatest science fiction stories and novels. The Citadel of Fear, her debut novel, has been recognized as a powerful tale of the lost world genre of adventure and remains central to Stevens’ reputation as a pioneering author of fantasy and science fiction. As the Great War rages on, two Irish American prospectors journey across the Mexican desert in search of fortune. Lucky to survive the heat and harsh conditions, they discover a dense jungle rumored to be the home of a lost tribe of Aztecs devoted to the serpent god Quetzalcoatl. Despite their fears, Kennedy and Colin O’Hara remain determined to complete their mission, no matter the cost. Venturing through the darkness of the jungle, they find the underground city of Tlapallam, where a group of assailants takes Kennedy prisoner. Left to return alone through the desert, O’Hara vows to return for his friend. Published at the height of Stevens’ career as a popular storyteller in the nation’s leading fantasy magazines, The Citadel of Fear is a lost world novel in the tradition of H. Rider Haggard and Edgar Rice Burroughs that continues to entertain and astound over a century after it appeared in print. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Francis Stevens’ The Citadel of Fear is a classic work of American science fiction reimagined for modern readers.

Resurrection of the Gods (1900) is a novel by Dmitriy Merezhkovsky. Having turned from his work in poetry to a new, spiritually charged interest in fiction, Merezhkovsky sought to develop his theory of the Third Testament, an apocalyptic vision of Christianity’s fulfillment in twentieth century humanity. Resurrection of the Gods, the second work in the trilogy, is preceded by The Death of the Gods (1895) and followed by Peter and Alexis (1904). Well received internationally, The Christ and Antichrist Trilogy was largely ignored by Russian critics at the time of its publication, but has since been recognized as his most original and vital literary work. “This personage was already inspecting the Venus, with a cold, imperturbable composure, so different from Giovanni's personal agitation, that the lad could not but be struck with astonishment. He continued to gaze at the statue, but his consciousness now was entirely for the man by his side.” In Resurrection of the Gods, Merezhkovsky moves his groundbreaking vision of spiritual progress and the historical development of humanity to the world of the Italian Renaissance. The novel captures a pivotal moment in the life of Leonardo da Vinci: invited as an expert to appraise a recently rediscovered statue of Venus, the artist embarks down a path of self-discovery whereby the humanist ideals of the ancient world will reinvigorate his faith in art. This edition of Dmitriy Merezhkovsky’s Resurrection of the Gods is a classic of Russian literature reimagined for modern readers.Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission. Tolstoy as Man and Artist with an Essay on Dostoevsky (1901) is a work of literary criticism by Dmitriy Merezhkovsky. Having turned from his work in poetry to a new, spiritually charged interest in fiction, Merezhkovsky sought to develop his theory of the Third Testament, an apocalyptic vision of Christianity’s fulfillment in twentieth century humanity. In this collection of essays on Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, Merezhkovsky explores the spiritual dimensions of the written word by examining the interconnection of being and writing for two of Russian literature’s most iconic writers. For Dmitriy Merezhkovsky, an author who always wrote with philosophical and spiritual purpose, the figure of the artist as a human being is a powerful tool for understanding the quality and focus of that artist’s work. Leo Tolstoy, author of such classics as War and Peace and Anna Karenina, developed a reputation as an ascetic, deeply spiritual man who envisioned his art as an extension of his political and religious beliefs. Dostoevsky, while perhaps more interested in the psychological aspects of human life, pursued a similar path in such novels as The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment. In Merezhkovsky’s view, these writers came to embody in their lives and works the particularly Russian conflict between truths both human and divine. Tolstoy as Man and Artist with an Essay on Dostoevsky is an invaluable text both for its analysis of its subjects and for its illumination of the philosophical concepts explored by Merezhkovsky throughout his storied career. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Dmitriy Merezhkovsky’s Tolstoy as Man and Artist with an Essay on Dostoevsky is a classic work of Russian literature reimagined for modern readers.

The Haunted Woman (1922) is a fantasy novel by David Lindsay. Following the commercial failure of his critically acclaimed novel A Voyage to Arcturus (1920), Lindsay hoped to achieve financial stability with a more conventional tale of suspense and the occult. Although he once more failed to reach a popular audience, Lindsay produced a powerful story of alternate worlds, the burden of convention, and the nature of human desire. “Never self-conscious, never embarrassed, always quiet and rather ennuyé, she fascinated by the very strength of her silence, which, it was abundantly clear, had nothing in common with stupidity. She had already declined three offers of marriage, before Marshall had appeared on her horizon.” Isbel Loment has always cherished her independence, never consenting to tie her fate to that of a man, especially not for love. Now engaged to successful underwriter Marshall Stokes, she finds herself nearing the end of the rootless lifestyle she has led since the age of sixteen, when the death of her father left her a ward of an eccentric aunt. While on vacation at an ancient estate in the hills of Sussex, Isbel discovers a mysterious staircase leading to three identical doors. Choosing one, she is transported to a mirror world where, though the details are lost upon leaving, she seems to be encountering her host Henry Judge. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of David Lindsay’s The Haunted Woman is a classic of British literature reimagined for modern readers.

Mrs. Dalloway (1925) is a novel by Virginia Woolf. Adapted from two short stories, “Mrs. Dalloway in Bond Street” and “The Prime Minister,” Mrs. Dalloway is a moving portrait of a day in the life of one woman, her thoughts and perceptions, and the influence of war on the human psyche. Recognized as one of Woolf’s most important works, Mrs. Dalloway is often considered one of the greatest English language novels of the twentieth century. In the aftermath of the Great War, two Londoners lead vastly different lives. Each of them, in their own way, has been impacted by violence—one, Clarissa Dalloway, has had her aristocratic lifestyle interrupted and struggles to reconcile her idyllic past with a present reeling from conflict; the other, Septimus Warren Smith, is a wounded veteran left to fend for himself on the streets of England’s capital. Throughout the day, as Mrs. Dalloway readies herself and her home for a party in the evening, she muses on her youth in the countryside and fantasizes about leaving her husband Richard. Across the city, Septimus lives in a park with his estranged Italian wife, Lucrezia. Suffering from a mental breakdown, he is struck with a series of powerful hallucinations and ultimately taken to a nearby psychiatric hospital. Well educated and decorated in battle, he has been left behind by the society he fought to protect, the very society gathering that night at Mrs. Dalloway’s opulent home. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway is a classic work of English literature reimagined for modern readers.

After being appointed the United States Minister Resident to the Ottoman Empire in 1849, George P. Marsh had the opportunity to travel the world and visit the sites of ancient civilizations. Troubled by what he saw, Marsh came to the conclusion that these societies were victims of self-destruction and that the same fate could be in store for the nations of today. Moved to action, Marsh would go on to publish Man and Nature: Or, Physical Geography as Modified by Human Action in 1864.Considered to be the first major work of environmental literature, Man and Nature would help to raise global awareness about the effect of human behavior on the natural world. Second only to Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of the Species in impact and influence, the book would be instrumental to the creation of the United States National Forest and launch the conservation movement into high gear within the United States.Professionally typeset with a beautifully designed cover, this edition of Man and Nature is a classic of environmental literature, reimagined for modern readers.

This collection includes three of classic American author Mark Twain’s best known and beloved novels. Tom Sawyer recounts the adventures of a self-confident but naïve boy who runs away with his friend, Huckleberry Finn, after witnessing a murder. This commentary on race, religion, and the oppression of societal norms is as spirited and controversial now as it was over a century ago. Samuel Hall Young, a Presbyterian clergyman, met John Muir when the great naturalist''s steamboat docked at Fort Wrangell, in southeastern Alaska, where Young was a missionary to the Stickeen Indians. In Alaska Days with John Muir he describes this 1879 meeting: "A hearty grip of the hand and we seemed to coalesce in a friendship which, to me at least, has been one of the very best things in a life full of blessings." This book, first published in 1915, describes two journeys of discovery taken in company with Muir in 1879 and 1880. Despite the pleas of his missionary colleagues that he not risk life and limb with "that wild Muir," Young accompanied Muir in the exploration of Glacier Bay. Upon Muir''s return to Alaska in 1880, they traveled together and mapped the inside route to Sitka. Young describes Muir''s ability to "slide" up glaciers, the broad Scotch he used when he was enjoying himself, and his natural affinity for Indian wisdom and theistic religion. From the gripping account of their near?disastrous ascent of Glenora Peak to Young''s perspective on Muir''s famous dog story "Stickeen," Alaska Days is an engaging record of a friendship grounded in the shared wonders of Alaska''s wild landscapes.
