As an age of empire and industry dawned in the wake of American Civil War, Southerners grappled with what it meant to be modern. The fair expositions popular at this time allowed Southerners to explore this changing world on their own terms. On a local, national, and global stage, African Americans, New South boosters, New Women, and Civil War soldiers presented their dreams of the future to prove to the world how rapidly the South had embraced and, in the words of Henry Grady in 1890, built "from pitiful resources a great and expanding empire."Nowhere was this more apparent than at the Atlanta and Nashville world's fairs held at the close of the nineteenth century. Here, Southerners presented themselves as modern and imperial citizens ready to spread the South's culture and racial politics across the globe. Unlike the World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893, the Southern expositions also gave African Americans an opportunity to present their own vision of modernity within the fairs' "Negro Buildings." At the fairs, southern African Americans defined themselves as both a separate race and a modern people, as "New Negroes." In Dream of the Future, Cardon explores these assertions of Southern identity and culture, critically placing them within the wider context of imperialism and industrialization.

This book explores the relationship between U.S. imperial aspirations and the circumscription of domestic civil liberties, especially the rights of the African American population. Central to this framework is the figure of the refugee, the homeless foreigner who constitutes a threat to national identity. Waligora-Davis demonstrates the importance of this figure to African Americans, people who possess a national identity, but are despised as 'other', 'foreign' and not belonging to the nation. African Americans are effectively rendered refugees when their injuries become invisible, when possibilities for redress are foreclosed. In response, the African American imaginary has repeatedly summoned the notion of sanctuary, a space that is imagined as utopian but that too often proves unattainable. Sanctuary presents an original contribution by outlining the ways that African Americans' challenges to citizenship and nation have failed to live up to a more human and global outlook. Black intellectuals and artists have long understood that domestic race relations are shaped by and help to shape US foreign relations and expansionist/imperialist empires. Sanctuary shows how by providing important and original historically-grounded readings of works by Melville and Du Bois, while introducing us to new sources within Langston Hughes' writings and popular texts like the Chicago Tribune's coverage of the Chicago race riot.

The complexity of the American economy and polity has grown at an explosive rate in our era of globalization. Yet as the 2008 financial crisis revealed, the evolution of the American state has not proceeded apace. The crisis exposed the system's manifold political and economic dysfunctionalities. Featuring a cast of leading scholars working at the intersection of political science and American history, The Unsustainable American State is a historically informed account of the American state's development from the nineteenth century to the present. It focuses in particular on the state-produced inequalities and administrative incoherence that became so apparent in the post-1970s era. Collectively, the book offers an unsettling account of the growth of racial and economic inequality, the ossification of the state, the gradual erosion of democracy, and the problems deriving from imperial overreach. Utilizing the framework of sustainability, a concept that is currently informing some of the best work on governance and development, the contributors show how the USA's current trajectory does not imply an impending collapse, but rather a gradual erosion of capacity and legitimacy. That is a more appropriate theoretical framework, they contend, because for all of its manifest flaws, the American state is durable. That durability, however, does not preclude a long relative decline.
