In 1942, the Canadian government forced more than 21,000 Japanese Canadians from their homes in British Columbia. They were told to bring only one suitcase each and officials vowed to protect the rest. Instead, Japanese Canadians were dispossessed, all their belongings either stolen or sold. The definitive statement of a major national research partnership, Landscapes of Injustice reinterprets the internment of Japanese Canadians by focusing on the deliberate and permanent destruction of home through the act of dispossession. All forms of property were taken. Families lost heirlooms and everyday possessions. They lost decades of investment and labour. They lost opportunities, neighbourhoods, and communities; they lost retirements, livelihoods, and educations. When Japanese Canadians were finally released from internment in 1949, they had no homes to return to. In the 1960s and 1970s, in the midst of the Cold War and an international decolonization movement, development advocates believed that poverty could be ended, at home and abroad. The Global Politics of Poverty in Canada explores the relationship between poverty, democracy, and development during this remarkable period. Will Langford analyzes three Canadian development programs that unfolded on local, regional, and international scales. He reveals the interconnections of anti-poverty activism carried out by the Company of Young Canadians among Métis in northern Alberta and francophones in Montreal, by the Cape Breton Development Corporation, and by Canadian University Service Overseas in Tanzania. In dialogue with the New Left, liberal reformers committed to development programs they believed would empower the poor to confront their own poverty and thereby foster a more meaningful democracy. However, democracy and development proved to be fundamentally contested, and development programs stopped short of amending capitalist social relations and the inequalities they engendered. The Global Politics of Poverty in Canada explores how Canadians engaged in informal and formal politics in the course of their everyday lives, locally and transnationally. Langford provides an enduring record of otherwise fleeting anti-poverty programs and their effects: the lived activism and opinions of development workers and ordinary people.

Canada's Other Red Scare shows how important it is to link the local and the global to broaden narratives of resistance in the 1960s; it is a history not of isolated events closed off from the present but of decolonization as a continuing process. Scott Rutherford explores with rigour and sensitivity the Indigenous political protest and social struggle that took place in Northwestern Ontario and Treaty 3 territory from 1965 to 1974. Drawing on archival documents, media coverage, published interviews, memoirs, and social movement literature, as well as his own lived experience as a settler growing up in Kenora, he reconstructs a period of turbulent protest and the responses it provoked, from support to disbelief to outright hostility. Indigenous organizers advocated for a wide range of issues, from better employment opportunities to the recognition of nationhood, by using such tactics as marches, cultural production, community organizing, journalism, and armed occupation. They drew inspiration from global currents - from black American freedom movements to Third World decolonization - to challenge the inequalities and racial logics that shaped settler-colonialism and daily life in Kenora. Accessible and wide-reaching, Canada's Other Red Scare makes the case that Indigenous political protest during this period should be thought of as both local and transnational, an urgent exercise in confronting the experience of settler-colonialism in places and moments of protest, when its logic and acts of dispossession are held up like a mirror.

In post–World War II Canada, black women’s positions within the teaching profession served as sites of struggle and conflict as the nation worked to address the needs of its diversifying population. From their entry into teachers’ college through their careers in the classroom and administration, black women educators encountered systemic racism and gender barriers at every step. So they worked to change the system.Using oral narratives to tell the story of black access and education in Ontario between the 1940s and the 1980s, Schooling the System provides textured insight into how issues of race, gender, class, geographic origin, and training shaped women’s distinct experiences within the profession. Most Canadians assume they live under some form of democracy. Yet confusion about the meaning of the word and the limits of the people's power obscures a deeper understanding. Constant Struggle looks for the democratic impulse in Canada's past to deconstruct how the country became a democracy, if in fact it ever did.This volume asks what limits and contradictions have framed the nation's democratization process, examining how democracy has been understood by those who have advocated for or resisted it and exploring key historical realities that have shaped it. In recent decades an increasing share of Canada's agricultural workforce has been made up of temporary foreign workers from the Global South. These labourers work difficult and dangerous jobs with limited legal protections and are effectively barred from permanent settlement in Canada.In Harvesting Labour Edward Dunsworth examines the history of farm work in one of Canada's underrecognized but most important crop sectors – Ontario tobacco. Dunsworth takes aim at the idea that temporary foreign worker programs emerged in response to labour shortages or the unwillingness of Canadians to work in agriculture. To the contrary, Ontario's tobacco sector was extremely popular with workers for much of the twentieth century, with high wages attracting a diverse workforce and enabling thousands to establish themselves as small farm owners. By the end of the century, however, the sector had become something entirely different: a handful of mega-farms relying on foreign guest workers to produce their crops. Taking readers from the leafy fields of Ontario's tobacco belt to rural Jamaica, Barbados, and North Carolina and on to the halls of government, Dunsworth demonstrates how the ultimate transformation of tobacco – and Canadian agriculture writ large – was fundamentally a function of the capitalist restructuring of farming.Harvesting Labour brings together the fields of labour, migration, and business history to reinterpret the historical origins of contemporary Canadian agriculture and its workforce.

Canadian book culture has served, in both domestic and international contexts, to underpin a moralizing rhetoric of enlightened liberal tolerance for difference. Between 1945 and the end of the 1970s the book – as object, as symbol, as idea – was used within the context of the development paradigm to express solidarity with newly decolonized nations, to argue for the importance of Canadian leadership in the new international order, and to secure settler liberal rule at home.The confluence of books and a national brand was shaped during the postwar decades by a liberal internationalism that privileged the book, and the associated skill of literacy, as a tool of development. Jody Mason analyzes how governmental and non-governmental actors deployed books as instruments of development in various parts of the Third World, how African decolonization movements shaped the nationalisms of Canadian writers who travelled to Africa as part of the burgeoning ngo movement, how late twentieth-century developmentalist ideologies shaped book-centric initiatives aimed at Indigenous communities in Canada, and how Indigenous activists and writers responded to, reframed, and sometimes rejected outright the premises of book development.This rich interdisciplinary study brings the work of Canadian historians into conversation with book history, literary studies, and settler-colonial studies to encourage a critical assessment of the values that supported developmentalist thinking, and the goals of development itself, at home and abroad.

Between 1960 and 1990 the Canadian mining giant International Nickel (INCO) sought to establish operations in New Caledonia, a French-controlled Pacific archipelago that holds some of the world’s richest nickel reserves. What might have seemed a straightforward mining venture quickly became a flashpoint: New Caledonians pressed for control over their political and economic future, while France regarded INCO’s presence as a challenge to its sovereignty.The ultimate frustration of INCO’s Pacific ambitions is a case study in the entangled forces of colonial power, global capital, and local resistance that marked the late twentieth century. INCO in Paradise offers fundamental insights into the actions of a Canadian corporate behemoth and its place within broader colonial and decolonial currents. Drawing on archival research conducted in four countries, the book ties together the history of New Caledonia; INCO’s role in debates over New Caledonian autonomy and their impact on Canada-France relations; the failure of the Compagnie française industrielle et minière du Pacifique (COFIMPAC), an experimental joint venture; and INCO’s interest in the Tiébaghi project. In 1919, Bolshevik Russia and its followers formed the Communist International, also known as the Comintern, to oversee the global communist movement.
