Critical AI Literacy in Higher Education

This seminal volume calls for a robust programme of critical AI literacy and a holistic, critical perspective that ensures technology supports, rather than eclipses, the core intellectual mission of universities and society at large. Equipping learners, educators, and institutions to wield technology critically, ethically and productively rather than be consumed by it, this book systematically deconstructs eight influential myths about AI, revealing its dependence on hidden human labour, massive data extraction, and corporate-driven mythmaking. Chapters highlight how different parts of teaching, learning, assessment, governance, and graduate employability are all at stake, further exacerbating longstanding crises in higher education. By critiquing AI determinism and insisting that universities actively shape their AI future, the book offers a roadmap: rigorous critique coupled with practical strategies to embed critical AI literacy across curricula. Rather than offering simplistic solutions or outright rejection, the book advocates for critical AI literacy as essential curriculum content, enabling educators and students to distinguish genuine human insight from statistical mimicry while using AI tools judiciously and ethically.Responding to a clear and pressing need in higher education, given the pervasive yet problematic hype enveloping AI and GenAI in contemporary discourse, this book is essential reading for researchers, policymakers and academics in the fields of artificial intelligence, higher education, educational technology, critical theories of education, and learning sciences.
