Beskrivning

This volume examines the artistic world of late Soviet unofficial artthe work that happened outside official channels, invisible to the general publicand asks what it actually took to make and sustain that world. It focuses on three interconnected concerns: how art was produced, how it was documented, and how it intervened in the official culture around it.One of the book's central insights is that the very conditions that made unofficial art precarious also shaped it creatively. Because this work existed in hidden, inaccessible spaces, documentation wasn't just record-keeping; it became a creative act in its own right, and the tension between unofficial practice and the official world became a subject and a strategy. The volume traces these dynamics through the work of artists including Ilya Kabakov, rik Bulatov, Yuri Albert, and Ewa Partum; groups like Kollektivnye Deistviia and Bosch+Bosch; and poets such as Vladimir rl', Dmitri Prigov, and Andrzej Partum. The book also makes a contemporary argument: that the survival strategies of late Soviet unofficial artmaking work under constraint, outside institutions, in the marginslook remarkably familiar in 2026. To explore that connection, the volume brings historical analysis into dialogue with the work of contemporary poets Roman Osminkin and Babi Badalov.
