Den här boken ger en lättillgänglig presentation av det svenska utbildnings­systemets historia. Utbildningsreformer för förskolan, grundskolan, folk­bildning och universitet beskrivs och introduktioner till skolämnenas historia presenteras, däribland svenska, historia och samhällskunskap. Övergripande och tvärgående perspektiv på utbildningshistorien anläggs för frågor som rör utbildningens ekonomiska historia, lärarkårens utveckling, sociala förhållandens betydelse för utbildning, utbildningspolitik samt betyg och bedömning. I boken medverkar ett tjugotal författare, varav de flesta är ledande specialister inom de ämnen de skriver om. This book highlights tensions and negotiating processes between modern society and conservative religious groups. Conservative religion and society have co-existed for at least a century in an increasingly pluralist society. Still, the right to religious freedom and tolerance clashes with certain expressions of religious exclusivity. In this book, scholars from different disciplines look at the various ways in which representatives of conservative religious faith live, practice, and formulate their religion in relation to a contemporary mainstream culture.  The studies included represent various settings with regard to time, religion and geography, and are presented in three thematic groups: culture, schooling and public life, and media. Taken together, the studies contribute to a more nuanced and diverse picture of conservative religious believers and their engagement with mainstream society. The book will be of interest to students and researchers in the fields of sociology of religion, church history and contemporary religion.

In recent years, movements for historical justice have gained global momentum and prominence as the focus on righting wrongs from the past has become a feature of contemporary politics. This imperative has manifested in globally diverse contexts including societies emerging from recent, violent conflict, but also established democracies which are increasingly compelled to address the legacies of colonialism, slavery, genocides, and war crimes, as well as other forms of protracted discord. This book examines historical justice from an educational perspective, exploring the myriad ways that education is understood as a site of historical injustice, as well as a mechanism for redress. The editors and contributors analyse the role of history education in processes of historical justice broadly, exploring educational sites, policies, media, and materials. Under 1900-talet blev frikyrkornas och de inomkyrkliga väckelserörelsernas gudstjänstlokaler många i övre Norrland. De kallades bönhus, missionshus och kapell, och de återfanns i nästan varje by. I dag har många av lokalerna rivits eller fått andra användningsområden. Antologin Där möten äger rum inleds med en övergripande kartläggning av gudstjänstlokalernas utveckling över tid och rum med hjälp av den digitala kartan DigiBön. Kartans upphovsman, Stefan Gelfgren, använder lokalernas samfundsanknytning till att belysa övre Norrlands kyrkogeografi. Boken behandlar bönhusrörelsens olika faser i skilda delar av Norrbottens och Västerbottens län. Daniel Lindmark undersöker bönhusens förhistoria i byarna i det rosenianska västerbottniska kustlandet och visar att de tidiga skolhusen ofta fungerade som gudstjänstlokaler. Eva Hellmans kapitel är i stället inriktat mot den nutida användningen av olika typer av västlaestadianska bönhus i Gällivaretrakten. I antologin ingår både kapitel som fokuserar på enskilda bönhus och studier som anlägger mer övergripande perspektiv. Medan Daniel Strömner genomför en totalinventering av de frikyrkliga lokalerna i Nordmalings kommun i Västerbotten, skriver Kjell Söderberg om den strid som på 1950-talet uppstod om ägandet av Jävre bönhus i Norrbotten. Boken avslutas med en essä av Anders Persson. I sin analys av lokaler och människor i Sune Jonssons dokumentära fotoböcker berör han tre av väckelsens huvudformer i övre Norrland: rosenianism, laestadianism och frikyrklighet. Det är dessa rörelsers möteslokaler som antologin uppmärksammar.

Präster i norr under tidigmodern tid är en bok om det protestantiska prästerskapet och dess roll i norra Skandinavien från 1500-talet till omkring år 1800. Boken behandlar särskilt två teman: kyrkliga dynastier och prästsläkter respektive lagstiftning och praxis. Temat om dynastier och släkter handlar om hur prästerna skapade starka kyrkliga nätverk och dynastier, men det innefattar också prästers utbildning, rekrytering, karriärvägar och ekonomi. Temat om lagstiftning och praxis tar upp det som kan betecknas som lagstiftningens gränser, nämligen förhållandet mellan å ena sidan centralmaktens normer för prästutbildning, ämbetsutövning och kyrkoliv och å andra sidan möjligheterna att realisera dessa normer i de nordliga områdena. Bokens båda huvudteman bidrar också till att belysa kulturmöten i norr, inte minst det lutherska prästerskapets förhållande till samers språk och kultur, till nybyggarkulturer och till handelsverksamhet. En underliggande fråga rör om det skedde en protestantisk kolonisering av Nordskandinavien med prästerna som aktörer. En sådan utveckling kan betraktas både som en förtryckande maktdemonstration och som ett bidrag till modernisering och förhandling om mening. Författarna är historiker, kyrkohistoriker och kulturhistoriker från de länder som boken berör – Sverige, Finland och Norge.

Under nära 30 år har den svenske pastorn och socialhistorikern Egil Johanssons forskningsinsats förbluffat den internationella akademiska världen. Johansson, som tidigt kom att intressera sig för kyrkoförsamlingarnas arkiv i norra Sverige, och särskilt för kyrkornas undervisningsregister, upptäckte dessa dokuments unika potential för att få en inblick i läs- och skrivkunnighetens historia i Sverige.I Understanding Literacy in its Historical Contexts undersöker en grupp internationella framstående forskare möjligheterna av en vidare tillämpning av centrala delar av den tidiga forskningen om alfabetiseringsprocessen. Den snabba tillväxten inom detta forskningsfält under de två senaste decennierna, som delvis är ett resultat av Egil Johanssons tidiga banbrytande upptäckter, har gett fältet en framskjuten plats inom historieämnet.Egil Johanssons utvecklade nydanande metoder att analysera den insamlade datan på, metoder som än idag hjälper historiker jorden runt att bättre förstå det förflutna. Tillsammans med ett flertal medarbetare grundade Egil Johansson också en stor databas för kyrkoarkiv, vilken också den fortfarande bidrar till forskningen om det förindustriella samhället. Egil Johanssons forskningsinsats spänner över ett brett socialhistoriskt spektra som innefattar förutom den historiska alfabetiseringsprocessen även religions- och genushistoria.

When Sweden became a literate country during the 18th century, the population was thoroughly christianized via instruction in Martin Luther's Small Catechism. This alphabetization of the Swedish people was documented in detail in the parish examination registers, where individual proficiency in reading, memorization, and understanding of the catechism was recorded. In the 1970s, Dr. Egil Johansson demonstrated the sources' potential for research, and initiated new projects in order do facilitate access to the records and develop new approaches to the history of Swedish popular education. In this book, the Umeå History of Education Research Group is presented. Under the leadership of Egil Johansson, this group explored various fields of educational history, from alphabetization compulsory schooling, and religious instruction in Sweden, to popular education in comparative and international perspectives. The title of the book, Religious Education in History, represents the main theme of the research group, and the articles written by some of the group members demonstrate the variety of geographical, ethnic, and denominational settings in the most recent research. This book also provides a repost from a meeting with a similar research group, Groupe de recherche sur l'histoire de l'enseignement religieux au Québec, Laval University, Canada. Taking its point of departure in the French Catholic Catechisms of Quebec, this group too had a double objective: to provide research tools to a wider community of scholars and conduct research in the history of catechetical teaching. The history of the Quebec current research group is outlined in the book, and three leading scholars present current research on Catholic religious instruction in Quebec. Representing different research traditions and disciplines, the contributions to this book illustrate the multitude of perspectives that can be opened upon the history of religious instruction in households, congregations, and schools is a matter of the greatest significance for the formation of ethnic and cultural identity. This is a common experience for individuals and groups in both confessional and inter-confessional settings.

I takt med att medier och kommunikationer utvecklas, ökar också kontakterna mellan olika språk och kulturer. Arbetsmigrationer och flyktingströmmar förändrar ständigt den språkliga och etniska världskartan. Globalisering och europeisk integration skapar nya minoriteter och väcker nya frågor om möjligheterna till förståelse över språk- och kulturgränser. De 23 artiklarna i antologin När språk och kulturer möts behandlar både historiska och nutida exempel på språk- och kulturmöten. Kontakterna mellan finskt och svenskt bildar ett huvudtema. Några artiklar uppehåller sig vid kontinentala och utomeuropeiska områden, men tyngdpunkten ligger på nordiska förhållanden. Särskilt uppmärksammas de finska och samiska minoriteterna på Nordkalotten. På ett initierat och tankeväckande sätt illustrerar artiklarna ett brett urval av de frågor som uppstår i möten mellan olika språk och kulturer. Språkforskare i Sverige och Finland belyser frågor kring språkgränser, tvåspråkighet, språkbyte, översättning, lånord och dialekter. I kulturhistoriskt inriktade artiklar behandlas kulturmöten i olika områden med språklig, religiös och kulturell mångfald. Boken presenterar aktuell forskning på ett lättillgängligt sätt och vänder sig till alla med intresse för de frågor som uppstår när språk och kulturer möts.

Swedish education before the era of compulsory schooling provides a fascinating panorama of different actors, objectives and curricula. In the latter part of the 17th century, primary and secondary education were organised in two distinct systems. The state-supported Latin school system prepared students from higher social strata for future careers in church and civil service by providing classical education, while popular education was restricted to basic reading and religious instruction conducted at home and examined by the Lutheran ministers. In Reading, Writing, and Schooling, Professor Daniel Lindmark analyses the functions and developments of the two educational systems. He argues that the division of Swedish education into elite and mass education reflects the widening cleavage between elite and popular culture characterising the period 1650-1850. The social and economic segmentation between the upper and lower strata of society was accompanied by separation between rural and urban areas, and between men and women. Reading ability and catechetical knowledge were the only common denominators in the educational field, but even the book market was divided into two distinct spheres, characterised by different genres and print types. Not until the implementation of the elementary school system in the middle of the 19th century, were conditions created for a broader reading culture based on national, rather than religious, symbols. By analysing the recruitment and careers of grammar school teachers and students, and by examining the methods and contents of popular education, this book reveals some of the educational and literacy practices of pre-industrial Sweden, where practical interests almost constantly challenged the ecclesiastical purposes of reading and schooling. In case studies of specific print and reading cultures, it is demonstrated how literacy practices contributed to creating ethnic and religious identities in certain reading communities.

I juni 2022 afholdtes der en konference i København i regi af NORDVECK, der er et tværfagligt nordisk netværk for forskning i de kristne vækkelsesbevægelser. Det overordnede tema for konferencen var Kristendom over grænserne, vækkelsesbevægelserne som grænseoverskridende kraft. Anledningen til at vælge dette tema var, at 2021 var 300-året for den norske missionær Hans Egedes afrejse til Grønland. Han gik over grænser – ikke bare geografisk, men også kirkeligt, idet han var den første norske missionær til at forkynde evangeliet for folk, der ikke havde hørt det før, og den første forkæmper for behovet for kristent missionsarbejde indenfor de etablerede lutherske kirker. Artiklerne i bogen spænder vidt. Geografisk omhandler de områder fra Vest-Norge til det nordlige Finland. Flere artikler berører også det internationale missionsarbejde, som har været en så karakteristisk prioritet for mange mennesker med tilknytning til de nordiske vækkelsesbevægelser. Kirkeligt omhandler nogle af artiklerne forhold i vækkelsesbevægelser indenfor de nationale lutherske flertalskirker mens andre behandler forhold i forskellige evangeliske frikirker. Tidsmæssigt strækker artiklernes emner sig fra herrnhuterne i det tidlige 1700-tal til perioden op imod vores egen tid.
