This volume contains the proceedings of EWSN 2006, the third in a series of - ropean workshops on wireless sensor networks. The workshop took place at ETH Zurich from February 13 to 15, 2006. Its objective was to present, discuss, and explore the latest technical developments in the ?eld of wireless sensor networks, as well as potential future directions. Wireless sensor networks provide a bridge between traditional information systems and the physical world, with collections of wirelessly networked s- sor nodes being deployed in our physical environment to cooperatively monitor real-world phenomena, but also to control aspects of the physical world. In c- trast to traditional computing systems which are mostly decoupled from the real world, wirelesssensornetworksareinherentlyandcloselyintegratedwiththereal world, with data about the physical environment being captured and processed automatically, online, and in real time. This paradigmatic change comes with a number of conceptual and technical challenges involving a wide range of dis- plines in computer science and electrical engineering, but also material sciences, MEMS technology, and power engineering, thus making wireless sensornetworks a multidisciplinary area of research. This workshop series aims at providing a high-level scienti?c forum to implement the cross-disciplinary exchange of ideas andresultsthatisessentialforthistypeofresearcharea. WhilebasedinEurope, the workshop serves as a truly international forum with 40% of the submissions originating from Europe, 38% from Asia and Australia, 20% from the Americas, and2%fromAfrica. Wireless sensor networks has become an active and popular research area, which is witnessed by the 133 submissions we received from authors all over the world.TheProgramCommitteechose21papersforinclusionintheworkshop.

ThisvolumecontainstheproceedingsoftheSecondInternationalSymposium on Agent Systems and Applications and the Fourth International Symposium onMobile Agents.ASA/MA 2000tookplacein Zurich,Switzerland, atthe ETH (the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) on September 13-15, 2000. In the age of information overload, agents have become an important p- gramming paradigm. Agents can act on behalf of users to collect, ?lter, and process information. They can act autonomously and react to changing en- ronments. Agents are deployed in di?erent settings, such as industrial control, Internet searching, personal assistance, network management, games, and many others. In our increasingly networked world, mobile code is another important p- grammingparadigm.Indistributed applicationsmobile code can improvespeed, ?exibility, structure, security, orthe ability to handle disconnection.Mobile code has been applied to mobile computing, wireless networks, active networks, m- ufacturing, networkmanagement, resourcediscovery, softwaredisseminationand con?guration, and many other situations. Mobile agents combine the features of agents and mobile-code technologies, and present their own set of challenges.Their use is increasingly explored by an expanding industry.

This volume is based on the workshop "Unifying Theory and Practice in Distributed Systems" held in Schlob Dagstuhl, Germany in September 1994. During the past 20 years, a substantial theoretical and practical base has evolved in the area of distributed computing. However, this work has been done by largely disjoint communities of researchers; this workshop brought together established experts from both worlds. The volume contains 17 full papers refereed and revised after the workshop so that they reflect original research enriched by insights gained through discussions at the workshop. Among the issues treated are paradigms and concepts, fundamental algorithms and principles, fault-tolerance, real-time, system structures, large case aspects and others.

ThisvolumecontainstheproceedingsoftheInternetofThings(IOT)Conference 2008, the ?rst international conference of its kind. The conference took place in Zurich,Switzerland, March26–28,2008. The term ‘Internet of Things’ hascome to describe a number of technologies and researchdisciplines that enable the - ternet to reach out into the real world of physical objects. Technologies such as RFID, short-range wireless communications, real-time localization, and sensor networks are becoming increasingly common, bringing the ‘Internet of Things’ into industrial, commercial, and domestic use. IOT 2008 brought together le- ing researchersand practitioners, from both academia and industry, to facilitate the sharing of ideas, applications, and research results. IOT 2008 attracted 92 high-quality submissions, from which the technical program committee accepted 23 papers, resulting in a competitive 25% acc- tance rate. In total, there were over 250 individual authors from 23 countries, representing both academic and industrial organizations. Papers were selected solely on the quality of their blind peer reviews. We were fortunate to draw on the combined experience of our 59 program committee members, coming from the most prestigious universities and research labs in Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia. Program committee members were aided by no less than 63 external reviewers in this rigorous process, in which each committee member wrote about 6 reviews. The total of 336 entered reviews resulted in an average of 3. 7 reviews per paper, or slightly more than 1000 words of feedback for each paper submitted.
