The Art of War:
The Art of War'' is an ancient Chinese military treatise written by Sun Tzu, a high-ranking military general, strategist and tactician. The text is composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare. It is commonly known to be the definitive work on military strategy and tactics of its time. It has been the most famous and influential of China''s Seven Military Classics, and for the last two thousand years it remained the most important military treatise in Asia, where even the common people knew it by name.
Sun Tzu believed war to be an essential wrongdoing that must be got rid of whenever it can be. The war should be fought fleetingly to reduce economic decline. Sun Tzu harped on the significance of placement in military tactics. The planning to position an army must be dependent on the stipulations in the physical surroundings and the subjective thoughts of various militants in those conditions. He believed that strategy cannot be considered as planning with respect to glancing through a previously decided list. It is better represented by the fact that it needs speedy and suitable reactions to altering situations. Planning gives results in restrained surroundings. But in case of an altering environment, similar plans come in each other''s ways and give rise to undesired outcomes. It has had an influence on Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, legal strategy and beyond.
The Book of Five Rings:
Along with Sun Tzu''s the art of War, the book of five rings is considered to be one of the most insightful texts on the subtle arts of confrontation and victory to emerge from Asia. It analyses the process of struggle and mastery over conflict that underlies every level of human interaction. For Musashi, the way of the martial arts was a mastery of the mind rather than simply technical prowess-and it is this path to mastery that is the core teaching in the book of five rings. This brilliant manifesto is written not only for martial artists but for anyone who wants to apply the timeless principles of this text to their life.

The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus by one of the most famous playwrights in all of literature, Christopher Marlowe. Marlowe''s tragic plays, noted for their blank verse and unique protagonists, were a great influence on the legendary William Shakespeare. This play is based on the Faustus story, in which a man sells his soul to the devil for power and knowledge. Doctor Faustus was first published in 1604, eleven years after Marlowe''s death and at least twelve years after the first performance of the play.
Faustus immediately takes advantage of his divine skills, using them to impress various men of distinction. Marlowe uses supernatural themes to explore the dire trappings of human nature. With influences from Christian doctrine, the story implicates the true wages of sin stemming from greed, gluttony and pride.
The author illustrates how the greatest tragedy is the one of your own making. It is the most controversial Elizabethan play outside of Shakespeare, with few critics coming to any agreement as to the date or the nature of the text.

Originally published in 1908, The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ by Levi H. Dowling is an interpretation of the lost eighteen years of Jesus Christ not mentioned in the four Gospel accounts. Dowling documents these eighteen years as a time when Jesus travels to the centers of wisdom in western India, Tibet, Persia, Assyria, Greece, and Egypt. This mystical work is the cornerstone of a Christian denomination, the Aquarian Christine Church Universal, and it offers intriguing, controversial assertions about Christ''s message.
Dowling, who devoted forty years of preparation to the task of transcribing its contents from original Akashic records, further asserts the reality of reincarnation and its culmination in the perfection of the human soul. Tracing Jesus'' life from his birth in Bethlehem to his ascension from the Mount of Olives, Dowling offers complete details concerning the savior''s years among monks, wise men, and seers throughout the Orient.
This book profoundly impacted the development of alternative spirituality in the early twentieth century. Readers with an interest in occult lore and the history of religion will find this remarkable work a source of endless fascination.

The Beautiful and Damned written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century, whose works are the paradigmatic writings of the Jazz Age, a term he coined. Set in New York City, the book tells the story of Anthony Patch, a socialite who thinks of himself as a refined aesthete. He marries the impressively beautiful Gloria and they both lead a luxurious life, travelling from one place to another and spending money irresponsibly while waiting to inherit the great fortune of Anthony''s grandfather.
Most of the narrative is about the life of emptiness and purposelessness led by the couple whose sole vocation is to dream of spending the money that they have not earned. Their marriage starts to deteriorate mainly because of this general lack of purpose, but also because of the couple''s addiction to alcohol and idleness.
The story also features other characters representing the generation of the Jazz Age. It turns out that the only character who seems to be confident and sure of his choices and objectives in life is Anthony''s grandfather who represents the previous generation and whose principles are clearly juxtaposed by the author with the adrift life of younger characters.

Hermann Hesse''s Journey to the East tells of a journey both geographic and spiritual, in a simple and mesmerizing prose. H.H., a German choirmaster, is invited on an expedition with the League, a secret society whose members consist of Paul Klee, Mozart, and Albertus Magnus. The participants traverse both space and time, encountering Noah''s Ark in Zurich and Don Quixote at Bremgarten. The pilgrims'' ultimate destination is the East, the "Home of the Light," where they expect to find spiritual renewal.
The harmony that ruled at the outset of the trip soon degenerates into open conflict. Each traveler finds the rest of the group intolerable and heads off in his own direction, with H.H. bitterly blaming the others for the failure of the journey. It is only long after the trip, while poring over records in the League archives, that H.H. discovers his own role in the dissolution of the group, and the ominous significance of the journey itself.

Mark Twain''s "tale" became his first historical novel, The Prince and the Pauper, published in 1881. This treasured historical satire, played out in two very different socioeconomic worlds of 16th Century England, centers around the lives of two boys born in London on the same day: Edward, Prince of Wales, and Tom Canty, a street beggar. During a chance encounter, the two realize they are identical and, as a lark, decide to exchange clothes and roles-a situation that briefly, but drastically, alters the lives of both youngsters.
The Prince, dressed in rags, wanders about the city''s boisterous neighborhoods among the lower classes and endures a series of hardships; poor Tom, now living with the royals, is constantly filled with the dread of being discovered for who and what he really is.
Mark Twain''s first attempt at historical fiction has been adapted many times in multiple mediums. The story has also become an archetypal inspiration for many similar "trading places" stories in which characters from different walks of life are moved by circumstances to experience others'' lives first hand.

The Shepherd of the Hills is Harold Bell Wright''s mostly fictional tale of people living in the foothills of the Ozarks. First published in 1907, the story is principally concerned with the relationship of Grant Matthews, Sr., affectionately known in his community as "Old Matt", and "The Shepherd of the Hills", a wise old man who has chosen the peace of the backwoods over the hustle and bustle of the city.
The Shepherd is a quiet and mysterious character who is trying to recover from a tragic and troubled past. While his reclusiveness has left him largely isolated from others in the settlement, he earns the love and trust of the Matthews clan, which is one of the most respected families in the community.
Set against The Shepherd''s story is also the touching and romantic love affair between the pretty young Samantha Lane and Grant "Young Matt" Matthews, Jr. The book has become an enduring and often adapted classic of American literature. It is beloved for its portrayal of the life and death concerns of ordinary people and for its commentary on human weaknesses, the strength of community, and the redemptive power of forgiveness and kindness.

Arthur W. Pink''s The Sovereignty of God is a powerful and influential work on the power of God over every aspect of human life, from the smallest specks of dust on earth to the greatest philosophical and spiritual challenges facing mankind. Born in England in 1886, Pink was little known during his own life and struggled with the day-to-day realities of life as a minister. He and his family moved frequently and lived in England, America, and Australia, before finally settling in Scotland, where he spent his time studying Scripture and writing books.
Originally published in 1918, this is one of his earliest works and tackles the issue of what power God has in the lives of man. Pink criticized the modern tendency to relegate God to the background and focus on science or reason as the solution to the evils plaguing the world. Pink insisted that mankind must reaffirm the absolute power and authority of God in every aspect of physical and spiritual life if man is ever to do or be good. One must begin this process by giving one''s free will over to God in everyday life. The faithful will continue to find practical and clear guidance in this timeless classic.

Seneca''s Letters from a Stoic are moral letters to his friend Lucilius, written over two thousand years ago. They still hold the power to fascinate. The letters were written by Seneca at the end of his life, during his retirement, after he had worked for the Emperor Nero for fifteen years. They are addressed to Lucilius, the then procurator of Sicily, although he is known only through Seneca''s writings. It is not clear from the historical record whether or not Seneca and Lucilius actually corresponded, or whether in fact Seneca created the work as a form of fiction.
Written in an intimate, conversational style, the letters reflect the traditional Stoic focus on living in accordance with nature and accepting the world on its own terms. The philosopher emphasizes the Roman values of courage, self-control, and rationality, yet he remains remarkably modern in his tolerant and cosmopolitan attitude.
Seneca''s interpretation of Stoicism constitutes a timeless and inspiring declaration of the dignity of the individual mind. For a new generation of Stoic students and practitioners, this lively, timeless guide to living the good life is an essential read.

Tarzan of the Apes, a classic tale of adventure by Edgar Rice Burroughs has captivated readers both young and old ever since it was first published in 1914. Highly imaginative, the story tells of an infant, the son of an aristocratic English couple, who was abandoned when his parents died in the jungles of Africa. Rescued and reared by apes, he learns to speak their language and imitate their ability to travel swiftly through the treetops. Eventually, his courage, immense strength and exceptional intelligence earn him the respect and admiration not only of the apes, but of all the creatures of the jungle.
Pitted against a steady stream of daunting challenges, Tarzan will rise to rule his tribe of apes and encounter fellow humans at last, when another shipwreck maroons lovely Jane Porter and her comrades on his shore. By couching his extravagant imagination in clear, direct prose the author balances his novel on a razor edge between realistic drama and pure fairy tale. Tarzan remains a unique and indelible character, capable of terrifying acts of bestial violence or noble acts of loyalty and self-sacrifice.
