The manufacturing industry is facing massive changes driven by digitalization and sustainability. It is being redefined to meet the UN SDGs with the creation of new materials, processes and machinery. The drive for digitalization in order to use resources more effectively and efficiently adds to the complexity of this twin transition. This book presents results from 8 years of research with 15 industry partners, following the transition towards a digitalized industry 4.0 manufacturing and sustainable manufacturing paradigm. The selected chapters demonstrate how globally competitive manufacturing in high-cost countries such as Norway is enabled by AI-supported intelligent and flexible automation and the use of digital twins, as well as human-centred manufacturing. This book describes the interactions in innovative and sustainable organizations and changes in materials, products and processes, digital twins and AI-supported automated manufacturing processes. Supported by case studies and reflections from the manufacturing industry, this book evaluates how the combination of digitalization and sustainability enables competitiveness. With a focus on multi-material products and processes, robust and flexible automation and innovative and sustainable organizations, it provides a multi-disciplinary insight into the challenges and opportunities faced by manufacturing industries over time. This book serves as an ideal reference for researchers, scholars and policymakers in manufacturing, production and operations, with a particular interest in technology and sustainability.

Coping with the Future has been written in response to widespread international awareness that the future is not predictable. In political and economic terms, we are in unknown territory, with daily developments around Brexit and the Trump Presidency, and "Kodak moments" in business. On the other hand, business leaders demand certainty, which is not available. This book redefines the nature of modern business. In contrast to recent trends, it has a focus on human-centred manufacturing and on decision-making which goes beyond a focus on short-term profit. The liberal capitalism of the USA and the UK is not the only current variety of capitalism. Business is not just about managers, but requires participation and engagement by workers. Since the financial crash of 2008, there has been much talk about the need for fresh approaches to business, but little has changed. This book pulls together current research and practice and poses new questions based on case studies. There is no one simple best way, but an uncertain future can be addressed, drawing on diverse past experience and cases. The book addresses an intended audience in business and universities, including business schools, around the world. The debate takes a broader approach, involving research in the social sciences and approaches from philosophy. The world has always been unpredictable, but we have allowed ourselves to be comforted by convenient myths. It is time to wake up.

This book examines how the norms, culture, and practices of the socio-economic Nordic model give them a competitive edge in globalized production chains. Using the Norwegian automotive industry – one of the most globalized industries in the world – as the empirical foundation of the book, it examines the strengths, tensions, and challenges the Norwegian work organization style meets in this particular business environment. It explores the current indicators of competitiveness, innovation, scientific excellence, and well-being as compared with the US, UK, EU, Japan, and elsewhere to address the hotly debated question of how institutions and culture contribute to or inhibit certain forms of work organization, learning, and economic performance.Integrating action research, organization studies, and learning and innovation economics, this book provides a more precise understanding of how institutions and cultures at a macro level shape learning practices in a competitive industry.
