Das Thomasevangelium, eine Schrift aus Codex II der Nag-Hammadi-Schriften, gehört zu dem umstrittensten Zeugnissen des frühen Christentums. Während einige Forscher darin eine Schrift sehen, die sehr alte Überlieferungen von Jesus bewahrt hat und deshalb näher an Jesus heranführen könnte als die neutestamentlichen Evangelien, wird es von anderen für einen Text gehalten, der bereits theologiegeschichtliche Entwicklungen des ersten Jahrhunderts voraussetzt und auf sie in eigener Weise reagiert. Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Sammelbandes sind vor dem Hintergrund dieser Diskussion entstanden. Sie gehen zurück auf eine Tagung, auf der Vertreter dieser Auslegungstraditionen ihre unterschiedlichen Interpretationsansätze und methodischen Zugangsweisen vorgestellt und miteinander ins Gespräch gebracht haben. Die Zusammenstellung der Beiträge gewährt deshalb einerseits einen Einblick in das facettenreiche Spektrum der gegenwärtigen Forschungsdiskussion zur Entstehung und zum theologischen Profil dieses Werkes. Andererseits zeigt sie neue Zugangsweisen auf, durch welche die Einordnung des Thomasevangeliums in das Spektrum der frühchristlichen Literatur – etwa im Blick auf sein Verhältnis zu anderen Nag-Hammadi-Schriften und zur Gnosis – auf eine neue Grundlage gestellt wird.

Luke-Acts is the first early Christian writing to which serious historiographical interest can be attributed. In view of the intense debate in recent years concerning the character and forms of classical historiography, this collection seeks to clarify the relationship of the Gospel to classical historiography, illustrated through the comparison of exemplary texts. In doing so, it reveals connections to early Jewish historiography and the Septuagint, to Greek and Roman historiography as well as further early Christian development up to Eusebius and Theodoret. Furthermore, it includes discussion about the genre of Acts in relation to the epos, the literary novel and the canonical Gospels, and also about the methods of classical historiography and essential aspects of the conception of Lukas’ writing.

The contributions in this volume are focused on the historical origins, religious provenance, and social function of ancient Jewish and Christian apocalyptic literature, including so-called ‘Gnostic’ writings. Although it is disputed whether there was a genre of ‘apocalyptic literature,’ it is obvious that numerous texts from ancient Judaism, early Christianity, and other religious milieus share a specific view of history and the world to come. Many of these writings are presented in form of a heavenly (divine) revelation, mediated through an otherworldly figure (like an angel) to an elected human being who discloses this revelation to his recipients in written form. In different strands of early Judaism, ancient Christianity as well as in Gnosticism, Manichaeism, and Islam, apocalyptic writings played an important role from early on and were produced also in later centuries. One of the most characteristic features of these texts is their specific interpretation of history, based on the knowledge about the upper, divine realm and the world to come.

Against this background the volume deals with a wide range of apocalyptic texts from different periods and various religious backgrounds.

Der Band bietet die erste Einführung in Konzepte der Imagination zukünftiger Medientechnologien. Ausgehend von der sozialen Transformation durch neue Medien wird die interdisziplinäre Debatte um die Vorstellbarmachung zukünftiger Medien vorgestellt. Im Durchgang durch etablierte Theorien aus Philosophie, Medientheorie, Sozialtheorie sowie Wissenschafts- und Technikforschung wird aufgezeigt, welchen breiten Einfluss Prozesse der Imagination, etwa in Gestalt von Narrativen wie in der Science Fiction, für die Diskursivierung und Konzeptualisierung von (digitalen) Medientechnologien haben. 

UFOs sind zentrales und virulentes Thema der Gegenwartsästhetik: Als über Medien vermittelte Objekte sind sie zugleich Prüfsteine für die Mechanismen medialer Realitätsvermittlung selbst. Dies gilt sowohl für die Möglichkeit, überhaupt einen Diskurs über UFOs zu führen, diese ‚unbekannten Flugobjekte‘ also zu erfassen und zu dokumentieren, als auch für die Verbreitung von Narrativen rund um UFOs in der Science-Fiction. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden UFOs als medienästhetische Objekte begriffen, mit denen verhandelt wird, was ‚wirklich‘ ist und wie die Medien zur Konstruktion der Wirklichkeit beitragen.

Globalisierung und Neoliberalismus prägen das Gesicht der Gegenwart. Dies löst auch ein neues Interesse an den Arbeiten von Karl Marx aus, die in den achtziger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts (und erst recht nach dem Kollaps des real existierenden Sozialismus) als unberührbar galten. Dabei kann einerseits davon ausgegangen werden, dass Marx bereits vor 150 Jahren heute aktuelle Prozesse beschrieben und ihre Strukturen problematisiert hat. Andererseits gehören zum Prozess der Globalisierung untrennbar auch »die Medien« sowie der sich weiter ausbreitende Diskurs darüber. »Media Marx« möchte zwischen Marx und den Medien vermitteln. Geordnet entlang der verschiedenen Medien werden dabei sowohl relevante Passagen bei Marx selbst als auch einschlägige Positionen der späteren marxistischen Theoriebildung zusammengetragen und diskutiert. In diesem Sinn bietet das Handbuch einen konzentrierten wie orientierenden Beitrag zur Frage nach den Möglichkeiten und Grenzen marxistischen Denkens in der Medientheorie.
