The present contributions examine three modes of interpretation—rewriting, appropriation, and commentary—within early Jewish and Christian texts. As is well known, scriptural interpretation was important, even central, for the process of identity formation in early Jewish and Christian communities. The modes of scriptural interpretation covered in the present volume not only betray deep commonalities in their approach and discursive field, but also illuminate the practical side of interpretation to which communal and/or polemical application is intrinsic. These different modes co-exist, operating side by side across the early period, rather than conforming to any clear developmental scheme. In the end, the category of interpretation itself turns out to be capatious, including material from sectarian Halakhah to Valentinian mythology to Rabbinic heresiological discourse. Further, contributors note that in a myriad of ways we remain the heirs of the interpretive projects explored here. Attending to the reception of scriptural texts in their ancient interpretation offers the opportunity for scholars to highlight their possibilities, promises and difficulties, opening them for others with ears to hear.

Der vorliegende Band geht auf eine Tagung zum Thema "Prophetie im Alten und Neuen Testament" des Bibelzentrums der Babes-Bolyai Universität Cluj (Klausenburg) zurück. In insgesamt vierzehn Beiträgen werden prophetische Gestalten und prophetische Literatur vom Israel der vorexilischen Zeit bis hin zum antiken Christentum dargestellt.

Die Autoren des vorliegenden Bandes untersuchen die Vorstellung von der "christlichen Gemeinde" in den Schriften der Apostolischen Väter. Sie behandeln verschiedene Aspekte, wie die Bemühungen, die Gemeinde zu organisieren, eine sakramentale und rituelle Praxis zu entwickeln, eine Identität gegenüber Außenstehenden zu schaffen, zu missionieren und nach einer besseren Gemeinschaft zu streben. Das Symposium befasste sich aus einer neuen Perspektive mit dem Thema, indem es sich auf die antiken Dokumente selbst konzentrierte anstatt sich auf einer rein theoretischen oder dogmatischen Ebene zu bewegen und indem es den historischen Kontext, vor dem sie entstanden sind und verbreitet wurden, kritisch hinterfragte.

Der vorliegende Band enthält die Ergebnisse eines internationalen Kolloquiums, welches im Februar 2015 an der geisteswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der KU Leuven abgehalten wurden und Experten in (spät)antiker Philosophie und frühchristlichen Studien zusammenbrachte. Die Beiträger wurden gebeten, über die Rezeption zweier grundlegender Texte, die sich mit dem Ursprung der Welt befassen, zu reflektieren - dem dritten Buch von Platons Timaios und der Schöpfungsgeschichte aus Genesis. Die Organisatoren hatten zwei Ziele: Sie wollten ein Forum bieten, um den Dialog zwischen Kollegen aus diesen Fachgebieten voranzutreiben, indem sie aus vergleichender Perspektive sowohl ein entscheidendes Thema untersuchen, welches beide Traditionen teilen, als auch die literarischen Gattungen, durch die dieses Thema entwickelt und überliefert wurde.

Der vorliegende Band enthält die Ergebnisse einer internationalen Konferenz, die das Ziel verfolgte, den Dialog zwischen Neutestamentlern und Epigraphikern, die Interesse an der neutestamentlichen Forschung haben, zu fördern. Nachdem eine vorangegangene Tagung einen etwas allgemeineren Ansatz verfolgt hatte, legte diese den Schwerpunkt auf eine bestimmte Schrift. Der Brief an die Kolosser, obwohl relativ kurz, wurde ausgewählt, weil er aus epigraphischer Sicht interessantes Material enthält und zudem Möglichkeiten bietet, einem weiteren Blickwinkel auf paulinische Literatur zu eröffnen. Die enthaltenen Aufsätze bieten Einblicke in die Welt der vorgesehenen Adressaten, zeigen Möglichkeiten auf, epigraphisches Material zu kontextualisieren, und belegen anhand von Fallbeispielen, wie dieses Material, in Verbindung mit literarischen und archäologischen Zeugnissen, bei der Interpretation spezifischer Konzepte oder Leitmotive in den Briefen von Nutzen sein kann.

In den letzten Jahrzehnten wurde der Bibelforschung die Bedeutung der Sozialwissenschaften für die eigene Arbeit nach und nach bewusst. Dies führte zu zahlreichen Arbeiten, die ihr Fachwissen aus den Fachgebieten der Gruppenbildungspsychologie, der Soziologie der aufkommenden Bewegungen und der Religionssoziologie sowie der historischen Anthropologie ziehen. Dieser Band enthält die Ergebnisse einer Tagung, die zahlreiche Bibelwissenschaftler, Spezialisten für antike Religionspraktiken und Befürworter eines anthropologischen Zugangs zu antiken christlichen und griechisch-römischen Bräuchen zusammenbrachte.

Wie haben griechische philosophische und frühchristliche Tradition über den Ursprung und das Ziel des Kosmos reflektiert und über die Antworten, die in den jeweiligen Traditionskreisen gegeben wurden? Die Aufsätze in diesem Band zeigen, dass die griechische philosophische und die frühchristliche Tradition ein gemeinsames Interesse daran hatten, nicht nur über die Prinzipien nachzudenken, die die Kosmologie bestimmen, und darüber, wie der Kosmos auf seine Prinzipien zurückgreift, sondern auch über die Antworten, die in beiden Tradition diesbezüglich gegeben wurden.

Die Beiträge dieses Bandes untersuchen Aspekte der Kompositionsgeschichte und Technik des Matthäusevangeliums, Kernelemente seiner Theologie und wie diese in die Erzählung integriert sind, sowie seine früheste Rezeptionsgeschichte im Mainstream-Christentum.

Die Beiträger dieses Bandes konzentrieren sich nicht auf soteriologische Standardthemen, sondern befassen sich mit verschiedenen, oft vernachlässigten Aspekten der Soteriologie von Johannes und Paulus. Sie zeigen, dass Aspekte wie Weisheit, Wille, Freiheit und Engel ein integraler Bestandteil der Soteriologie sind.

Der inhaltlich stringente Sammelband beschreitet eine doppelte Kontextualisierungsstrategie: Zunächst werden die Rahmenbedingungen der Zeit Johann Jakob Wettsteins bedacht, in denen er sein wissenschaftliches Oeuvre verfasst hat. Das geschieht in zweierlei Hinsicht: zum einen in Beiträgen, die im strengen Sinn Aspekte aus der Vita Wettsteins analysieren und solchen, die in einem weiteren Bogen den kulturgeschichtlichen Kontext des 18. Jahrhunderts deuten. Zum anderen wird der Ertrag aus Wettsteins religionsgeschichtlicher Arbeitsweise für die Exegese der Apostelgeschichte zur Geltung gebracht. Die dabei verwendeten Voraussetzungen ähneln insoweit denjenigen aus dem ersten Block, als sie den kulturhistorischen Verstehensrahmen im Hellenismus der neutestamentlichen Zeitgeschichte gewinnbringend analysieren. So vereint die Person J. J. Wettstein alte und neue kulturhistorische Arbeit am Neuen Testament.Dabei treten vor allem die Kapitel 1–9 in den Vordergrund.
