This anthology comprises 14 chapters that expand our understanding of a formative phase in the development of Sweden’s land surveying and state administration in the late 17th century. The contributions range from detailed studies of large-scale geometric and smallscale geographic maps to analyses of broader political transformations. Following Gustav II Adolf’s distribution of estates and declining tax revenues, survey activity declined around 1650 but was vigorously resumed under Karl XI, when the Reduction demanded extensive mapping of noble and Crown estates, soldiers’ crofts, forests and commons. In a political landscape marked by absolutism and shifting balances of power between the nobility, the crown and freeholders, mapping strengthened the state’s interests and reduced the old nobility’s influence. Taken together, the volume shows how an initially vague defined project evolved into a modern, legally effective instrument that laid the groundwork for later land enclosure, land reforms and a more efficient state administration.

Men det fanns även en annan sida av den gråa och smutsiga staden. Den goda sidan med dofter av nybakat bröd, rostat kaffe, tobak, choklad och vanilj.

I detta svunna Malmö vimlade det av bagerier, rosterier, bryggerier, mejerier och charkuterier. Där tillverkades socker, godis och läsk, kärnades smör, stoppades korv, bryggdes öl och gräddades wienerbröd.

Här dukar Martin Andersson upp ett lokalt gottebord och berättar om företagen bakom detta livets goda, som på olika sätt bidragit till Malmös framgångar. Men också om barnarbete och om arbetsplatser som präglades av kvinnliga arbetare och fackliga konflikter.

Legofolket - de som senare kom att kallas tjänstefolk, drängar och pigor - var under lång tid den helt dominerande arbetskraften i Sverige. Från 1200-talet framåt var att tjäna vid gods och gårdar det vanligaste sättet att försörja sig. Fattiga människor kunde nämligen med stöd av lagen tvingas till arbete för en husbonde. Legofolkssystemet ersatte på det viset träldomen i Sverige.

I Från trälar till tjänstefolk skildrar historikern Martin Andersson hur regleringarna av legofolkets arbetsvillkor gradvis hårdnade. Arbetstvånget skärptes med hot om hårda straff och tvångsutskrivning till armén. Pålagor om sänkningar av lönen utfärdades medan arbetarnas möjligheter till annan försörjning blockerades. Husbondens rätt att använda våld utökades medan de anställdas plikt att lyda stärktes.

Vid slutet av 1500-talet arbetade de flesta drängar och pigor på gods eller hos rika bönder - de hade minimala möjligheter att själva kunna erövra en husbondes roll. Med studier av ett rikt material av landskapslagar, rättegångsprotokoll och böteslängder, kungliga brev och handböcker för godsägare skildrar författaren ingående legofolkets vardagsliv - ett liv präglat av rättsosäkerhet, tvång och fattigdom.
