The first complete account of the life and work of Wilfred Adolphus Domingo (1889-1968), one of the most significant West Indian anti-colonialists of the twentieth century.
When W. A. Domingo died in 1968, the Jamaican ex-premier Norman Manley wrote that ''no one in the world made greater sacrifices or suffered more for the cause he believed in—the cause of freedom for Jamaica and our escape from the bonds and fetters of British Imperialism.'' Despite this claim, Domingo has remained a shadowy figure. This book brings him, at last, into the foreground of anti-colonial struggle in the Caribbean.
The book looks at Domingo''s ideological tenets and political commitments at various stages in his life. Each section contains a substantial introduction followed by a selection of Domingo''s writings, including new biographical information which sheds light on Domingo''s early years as well as on his relationships with Marcus Garvey and the Communist movement.

The Enlightenment, a broad and complex phenomenon, is a vital part of the history of European culture. It shaped intellectual life from the middle of the seventeenth century until the early nineteenth century and in its shadows many intellectual battles are still being fought. The contributors to this original and provocative book, The Enlightenment and Its Shadows (originally published in 1990) subject both Enlightenment and subsequent responses to it to critical scrutiny.
Passionately committed to an interdisciplinary approach, the contributions are drawn from a variety of disciplines: art history and theory, government, history, language and linguistics, literature, philosophy, sociology, music, economics—and present a distinctively broad and polemical view of the Enlightenment, which is enhanced by the imaginative use of numerous illustrations. The essays demonstrate the continuing importance of the Enlightenment to a range of debates of the time on such issues as human rights, nature, economics, and colonialism. They focus on England, Scotland, France, and Germany, and their innovative approach does justice to the complexity of figures like Voltaire, Ferguson, Kant, Burke, and Rousseau.
Essential reading for students of the history, literature, culture, philosophy, and politics of Europe between 1650 and 1820, the book will be invaluable for general readers interested in the period.

Postcolonial Film: History, Empire, Resistance examines films of the later twentieth and early twenty-first centuries from postcolonial countries around the globe. In the mid twentieth century, the political reality of resistance and decolonization lead to the creation of dozens of new states, forming a backdrop to films of that period. Towards the century’s end and at the dawn of the new millennium, film continues to form a site for interrogating colonization and decolonization, though against a backdrop that is now more neo-colonial than colonial and more culturally imperial than imperial. This volume explores how individual films emerged from and commented on postcolonial spaces and the building and breaking down of the European empire. Each chapter is a case study examining how a particular film from a postcolonial nation emerges from and reflects that nation’s unique postcolonial situation. This analysis of one nation’s struggle with its coloniality allows each essay to investigate just what it means to be postcolonial.
