This book illustrates various aspects and dimensions of cognitive cities. Following a comprehensive introduction, the first part of the book explores conceptual considerations for the design of cognitive cities, while the second part focuses on concrete applications. The contributions provide an overview of the wide diversity of cognitive city conceptualizations and help readers to better understand why it is important to think about the design of our cities. The book adopts a transdisciplinary approach since the cognitive city concept can only be achieved through cooperation across different academic disciplines (e.g., economics, computer science, mathematics) and between research and practice. More and more people live in a growing number of ever-larger cities. As such, it is important to reflect on how cities need to be designed to provide their inhabitants with the means and resources for a good life. The cognitive city is an emerging, innovative approach to address thisneed.

This book, which goes far beyond a traditional collection of technical articles, is dedicated to Enric Trillas, a fuzzy systems pioneer but also an internationally renowned researcher in other areas of science, such as mathematics and aerospace, and an outstanding manager of scientific affairs in Spain. Some of the contributions in this book develop technical, state-of-the-art themes obviously related to fuzzy logic, while others resemble popular-science articles that shed light on complex mathematical concepts. There are also chapters that highlight the authors’ personal relationships and experiences working with Enric Trillas. While planning this book project, the editors decided to give contributors absolute freedom of thought and expression in preparing their chapters. The result is a colorful and inspiring mixture of styles and topics, which perfectly reflects Enric Trillas’s multifaceted contributions to research and his outstanding role in promoting education and technological transfer in the field of soft computing. Alle Prozesse in der Natur enthalten eine oder mehrere ungewisse Komponenten, zeigen Ungewißheiten oder haben einen mehr oder weniger ungewissen Ausgang. Dabei kann man unterscheiden, ob man einen Vorgang -oder einen Teil davon -als ungewiß ansieht, weil man ihn nicht exakt deterministisch erfassen kann (z. B. die Kursentwicklung an einer Wertpapierbörse), ob man ihn als genuin zufällig ansieht (z. B. den radioaktiven Zerfall eines Stoffes) oder ob die Ungewißheit des Vorgangs von seiner Beschreibung mit vagen Begriffen herrührt. Unsere heutigen sehr kom­ plexen sozialen und technischen Strukturen sind ohne den Einsatz von Verfahren zur Behandlung ungewisser Effekte nicht mehr vorstellbar, wenn man z. B. nur an Lebens-und Krankenversicherungen einerseits und an die Berechnung der Zu­ verlässigkeit technischer Systeme und Prozesse andererseits denkt. Die Entwicklung mathematischer Werkzeuge zur Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung und Statistik führte zu der bis in unser Jahrhundert unangefochtenen Stellung der Stochastik als der besten wissenschaftlichen Methode zur Behandlung von Aspekten der Ungewißheit. In der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts etablierte sich dann die Fuzzy Theorie, die Lotfi Zadeh in der Arbeit "Fuzzy Sets" (1965) als Verallgemeinerung der Can­ torschen Mengentheorie begründete, als eine ernstzunehmende Konkurrentin für die Aufgabe, Ungewißheiten zu modellieren. This book is a collection of contributions written by philosophers and scientists active in different fields, such as mathematics, logics, social sciences, computer sciences and linguistics. They comment on and discuss various parts of and subjects and propositions introduced in the Handbook of Analytical Philosophy of Medicine from Kadem Sadegh-Zadeh, published by Springer in 2012. This volume reports on the fruitful exchange and debate that arose in the fuzzy community upon the publication of the Handbook. This was not only very much appreciated by the community but also seen as a critical starting point for beginning a new discussion. The results of this discussion, which involved many different perspectives from science and the humanities and was warmly encouraged by Kadem Sadegh-Zadeh himself, are accurately reported in this volume, which is intended to be a critical companion to Kadem Sadegh-Zadeh´s handbook. Rudolf Seising is currently an adjunct researcher at the European Centre for Soft Computing in Mieres, Asturias (Spain) and a college lecturer at the Faculty of History and Arts, at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (Germany). Marco Elio Tabacchi is currently the Scientific Director of the Italian National Research & Survey Organization Demopolis, and a research assistant in the Soft Computing Group at University of Palermo (Italy).
