This unique collection of essays from researchers and teacher educators from around the world presents innovative approaches to education theory, critical policy analyses, de-colonializing reformulations of teacher education and a “standard of dissensus” for teacher education. This first volume from the International Teacher Education Research Collective (ITERC) illustrates common themes and problems in the politics of education, in particular, standardization, marketization, governance and policy in education, with both country-specific cases and generally formulated theoretical discussions. The book has three primary aims: to illustrate and critique the ethical, epistemological and political discourses shaping teacher education; to identify and unravel the entanglements of politics, knowledge and ethics in teacher education in a range of international settings; and to revitalize teacher education by proposing and exploring alternative modes of thought and practice. The volume contributes to further reflection and in-depth discussion in education, to the formulation of new areas for educational research and to critical resistance to hegemonic discourses of education.Making an important contribution to contemporary education discourse, this book is a useful guide for education researchers and theorists, teacher educators and postgraduate and higher degree research students in education.

This book illustrates the application of socio-materialist theory to educational research contexts focused on the study of classroom practices. It explores the methodological opportunities, challenges and tensions the researcher faces in designing, conducting and analysing socio-materialist education research. Ruth Unsworth draws together two theoretical perspectives, actor-network theory (ANT) and the (new) literacy studies (LS), to offer a socio-material ‘way in’ to studying the complexity and dynamism of classroom practices. Drawing on an ethnographic study of teachers’ classroom practices in an English primary school, the author offers advice around research design, collecting and analysing data and the writing of ANT-LS accounts. This book contributes to the field of education research offering an in-depth exploration of the challenges and opportunities of social theory application, examining critical epistemological, practical and analytical aspects of socio-materialist theory as method.

This book critiques the humanist legacy in education, arguing that it frames our thoughts, imaginations and conceptualisations of what education means and can be about. It offers an alternative perspective, unburdened by this legacy, and grounded in a ‘weak ontology’, as a means of opening up new possibilities for the educational imagination. The authors argue that by embracing humanism’s values of rectitude and redemption as foundational, education becomes nothing more than a means to “social hygiene and economic productivity” (Bojesen, 2020). The authors offer a repertoire of concepts that begin to affirm educational experience, each chapter exploring the potential and challenges of these concepts. Those concepts include subjectivity and inclination, conversation, natality and the event, finitude and death, and indeterminability. These are used to challenge the dominant educational drives for progress and economic growth and offers a bold and timely vision for education that truly matters in an age of relentless expansion and mounting global crises.

Educational research worldwide has shown that outdoor learning is a positive element of educational practices, which benefits children’s mental health and wellbeing, physical wellness, cognitive development. The BERA Guide to Outdoor Learning offers diverse perspectives on outdoor learning in all educational settings and advocates a teaching philosophy centred on immersive experiences, nature connection, play, dialogue and experiential learning, making use of place-based pedagogical perspectives. This collection shows how outdoor, play-based learning can support the teaching in all educational contexts including Higher Education. The theoretical framework for the future of research and practice in outdoor learning will benefit practitioners in both primary and secondary schools, school leaders, teacher educators and outdoor learning providers. Accompanied by case studies and vignettes, chapters exemplify how research in alternative and under-represented aspects of outdoor learning can support the development of curriculum and pedagogy to develop creative and meaningful learning experiences for all children to deepen their learning across a ‘broad and balanced’ curriculum.Published in partnership between the British Educational Research Association (BERA) and Emerald Publishing, The BERA Guides are short, research-informed yet accessible introductions to key, interdisciplinary topics impacting education research and practice for a broad academic audience.
