English-Medium Instruction (EMI) is a rapidly growing global phenomenon in countries where English is a second or foreign language. This book focuses on empirical research studies conducted on this growing trend in the Middle East and North Africa, an under-researched area with regards to the effects and challenges of the implementation of EMI in higher education. The contributors are researchers with first-hand experience in countries in the region, including Iran, Kuwait, Morocco, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Turkey. Each chapter follows a consistent structure, allowing comparisons to be drawn between policies and practices in different countries. Topics covered include investigating perceptions and attitudes of both students and lecturers, opportunities and challenges afforded by EMI, as well as the evolution of EMI practices. By exploring these issues, through the lens of a decolonial critical approach, this volume informs theory underlying research into the phenomenon of EMI in the region.

One popular implementation of EMI, the Multilingual Model, would imply that some aspects (e.g. courses, sessions in some courses, and/or assessment) are taught through English, whereas the first language of the students is used in some other respects. This volume explores context-related ways in which the multilingual EMI model and translingual practices are seen and enacted in higher education contexts across the globe. Research on this topic is not only timely but also very much needed, particularly in contexts that are relatively new to EMI, as well as in contexts where monolingual forms of teaching and monolingual institutional policies still prevail. Empirical, research-based studies as well as theoretical reviews that centre around multilingual and translingual practices in partial and full (i.e. English-only) EMI settings are elaborated, with case studies from Colombia, Indonesia, Iraq, Norway, Qatar, Spain, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, the UK and the USA.

This book examines assessment, testing and evaluation within English-medium education contexts globally. This book is Volume 1 of The Linguistic Landscape of Higher Education Internationalisation, a project examining the role of English as a Language of Globalisation and Internationalisation (ELGI), a term first introduced in this work, to describe the use of English as a key driver of internationalisation in higher education. The volume focuses on contexts in Kachru’s outer and expanding circles, particularly in Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, where English is neither a heritage nor an official language.Adopting a critical perspective, the contributors explore how ELGI reshapes identities, local languages, and cultures, alongside institutional practices of Englishisation in HE. Attention is given to multilingualism, language hegemony, resistance to Englishisation, and stakeholder voices at the grassroots level.
