This open access book looks at how, in the 17th and 18th centuries, a new loanword ‘private’ came into the Nordic languages. It had very little to do with the way we define the word today. Still, the introduction of it contributed to an emerging discourse that clearly distinguished between the public – usually identified with the state – and its opposite.Private/Public in 18th-Century Scandinavia includes ten case studies analysed by leading Swedish and Danish researchers in the fields of history, law, archaeology, and theology. It considers whether the modern sense of the word ‘private’ can be found in material from the period. The questions are approached through a multitude of different sources, including parliamentary-records, letters, newspapers, architectural drawings, archaeological findings, records of probate courts, legislation, and court cases. The volume starts from the assumption that the private and the public neither were, nor are, fully separated, but instead continuously work in relation to each other. To study the private, it argues, we are compelled to pay special attention to the public and how private and public interacted.Privacy and protection of privacy remains of great topical interest and this book contributes to the present-day debate by examining neglected aspects of the history of the private before these concepts gained their modern meaning. Reflecting debate around hospitality and the Baltic Sea region, this open access book taps into wider discussions about reception, securitization and xenophobic attitudes towards migrants and strangers. Focusing on coastal and urban areas, the collection presents an overview of the responses of host communities to guests and strangers in the countries surrounding the Baltic Sea, from the early eleventh century to the twentieth. The chapters investigate why and how diverse categories of strangers including migrants, war refugees, prisoners of war, merchants, missionaries and vagrants, were portrayed as threats to local populations or as objects of their charity, shedding light on the current predicament facing many European countries. Emphasizing the Baltic Sea region as a uniquely multi-layered space of intercultural encounter and conflict, this book demonstrates the significance of Northeastern Europe to migration history.

Vad kan bilder säga om kvinnligt och manligt i det förflutna? I Bildligt talat. Kvinnligt, manligt i 3,2 miljoner år tar vi en tvärvetenskaplig promenad genom ett historiskt bildgalleri, för att ta reda på hur mäns och kvinnors egenskaper åskådliggjorts genom tiderna. Här samlas historiker, antikvetare och arkeologer kring bild som historiskt vittnesbörd om kvinnligt och manligt. Forskarna betraktar återgivningen av "urkvinnan" Lucy, familjeporträtt på antika gravreliefer, kroppsnormer i tidiga vikingaföremål, bildskapande i isländska sagor, skiftande könsfokusering i 1500-talets klädmode, genusaspekter på kröningsceremonier under 1700-talet, kungliga snedsprång under frihetstiden, nakna stenålderskvinnor i dansk 1940-talsfilm och en såväl tillbaka- som framåtblickande utställning om människans evolution. Genom alla dessa olika bilder kan vi få kunskap om historien. Dels klargör bilderna sidor av det förflutnas samhällsliv som inte lika väl låter sig fångas i bevarade texter, dels utgör de tidsdokument i sig själva. Från vissa epoker och samhällen saknas skrifter helt, och då är det just genom bevarade lämningar och bilder som vi alls kan närma oss det förflutna. Den naturliga startpunkten är vår tids uttolkning av de fynd som visar hur länge mänskligt liv varit en realitet. Bokens tidsspann är således hisnande långt: 3,2 miljoner år! Vad som betraktats som kvinnligt respektive manligt varierar i tid och rum. Vad som däremot inte förändrats är en överallt och i alla tider återkommande vilja att göra åtskillnad mellan könen.
