The changing role of materiality first became apparent and perceptible through F.-J. Lyotard and T. Chaput's legendary exhibition Les Immatériaux at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Where are we today, 3 years later? The essays in this volume thematize the most diverse forms of materiality, including the materiality of production or the relationship between production and materiality. Beyond art, film and literature, the essays also focus on the body, rituals and thought patterns as well as the processual in historical epochs. The authors of this volume show that we can anticipate a longue durée, a long life of service of " materiality," which thus far has only been given peripheral attention in the Western philosophy of science's dominant discourses.

The correspondence between physical features and the character of a person, which was the matrix for the natural sciences of the 19th century, is today a basis for lifestyle norms, and even for psychological and medical diagnostics. This volume historically and systematically examines the biopolitical performativity of physiognomic practices, their mediality, and the knowledge of life implied in the aesthetics of texts and media.

Schrift ist das Speichermedium des kulturellen Gedächtnisses; ihre Bedeutung und Wirkung ist historisch, medial und kulturell bedingt. Anliegen des Bandes ist es, durch seine interdisziplinäre Ausrichtung (Anglistik, Germanistik, Judaistik, Romanistik, Kunstgeschichte) begrenzte Einzel- und Einheitsperspektiven auf Schrift aufzubrechen, um ebenso den Blick auf Differenzen wie auf Durchmischungen und Überlagerungen unterschiedlicher Schrifttraditionen freizugeben. Der Band umfasst Beiträge zur neuesten Gedächtnisforschung, Oralität-Literalität-Debatte, Schrifttheorie und Schriftgeschichte sowie zu europäischen und außereuropäischen Schriftkulturen; den Schwerpunkt bildet das Thema des Einflusses jüdischer Schrifttraditionen auf die Entwicklung und Ausprägung europäischer Schriftkulturen.

An der Wende zum 21. Jahrhundert ist der Gedächtnisbegriff zu einem zentralen Paradigma der Kulturwissenschaften geworden. Trotz des gegenwärtigen »Booms« der Gedächtnisforschung findet jedoch das Verhältnis von Medialität und Gedächtnis immer noch vergleichsweise wenig Beachtung. Ausgehend von der These, dass kollektive Gedächtnisse prinzipiell medial konstruiert werden, versammelt der vorliegende Band Beiträge, die aus dem an der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf angesiedelten interdisziplinären Forschungsforum »Europäisches Gedächtnis. Alterität und nationale Geschichtsschreibung. Alte und neue kulturelle Speicher« hervorgegangen sind. Die Autorinnen und Autoren nähern sich aus literatur- und medienwissenschaftlicher sowie aus historischer Perspektive dem Problem der kulturellen Verarbeitung europäischer Krisen.
