I denna essäbok presenteras tre olika aspekter av den mytomspunna 1800-talsförfattaren Victoria ­Benedictsson. Maria Hansson utgår från det internationella genombrottet i 1880-talets skandinaviska litteratur där författare som Ibsen och  Strindberg belyste äktenskapliga problem i dramatik och ­romaner, medan Benedictsson i stället använde folktron i myter och sagor för att hävda sig som kvinnlig författare. Eva Öhrström tar upp salongskulturens historia för att visa vad som hände när Benedictsson lämnade lilla Hörby för att besöka Stockholms kulturkretsar. Litteraturprofessor Yvonne Leffler visar i en tredje litteratursociologisk studie på det stora internationella intresset för Victoria Benedictsson.  

The book explores the Gothic tradition in Swedish literature. It aims to give an overview of the development of Swedish Gothic from the Romantic age until today and to highlight the characteristic features of the Swedish tradition of Gothic in relation to transnational developments, in particular in relation to the Anglo-American tradition. By using a contextualising comparative perspective, it highlights the most prevalent and prominent feature of Swedish Gothic, the significance of the Nordic landscape, the wilderness and local folklore. In Swedish fiction, the terror is not pointing to the medieval period but is located in pre-Christian, pagan times. Especially in today’s Gothic narratives, the presence of mythical creatures and nature beings, such as trolls, tomtes or vittras enhances the Gothic atmosphere. Other domestic trends are Gothic crime stories, where supernatural creatures and powers constantly obstruct the modern crime investigation, and the use of gendered and female monsters.

Vid mitten av 1700-talet hängav sig den svenska publiken åt dåtidens stora utländska brevromaner: Richardsons Pamela och Clarissa, Rousseus Julie och Goethes Den unge Werthers lidanden. Det finns många exempel på brevromanernas enorma inflytande och hur de brevskrivande hjältarna och hjältinnorna fungerade som förebilder och identifikationsobjekt för dåtidens läsare.

Snart kom också brevberättelser skrivna på svenska. 1770 trycktes Hans Bergeströms Indianiske bref. Under det tidiga 1800-talet publicerades brevromaner som Per Adolf Granbergs Enslingshetsälskaren (1800), Clas Livijns Spader Dame (1824), C.J.L. Almqvists Araminta May (1838) och Fredrika Bremers båda romaner Axel och Anna (1828) och Grannarne (1837).

Jag har fått ett bref är en bred genomgång av brevromanens uppkomst och de svenska brevromaner som publicerades mellan 1770 och 1870. I boken undersöks romanerna utifrån olika kompositionella och tematiska aspekter, och här diskuteras bland annat hur de svenska författarna använde brevformen för att uppnå särskilda syften samt hur de förhöll sig till dåtidens utländska förebilder och genrekonventioner.
