Meet Lady Lupin Lorimer Hastings the young, lovely, scatter brained and kind-hearted newlywed wife to Andrew, the vicar of St Marks parish in Glanville, Sussex. When it comes to matters clerical, she is rather at sea. Nevertheless, she is determined to make her husband proud of her or at least not to embarrass him too badly. When, on Christmas Eve, Andrew's unpopular, blackmailing curate gets himself murdered, things all get a bit (hilariously) overwhelming for poor out-of-her-depth Lady Lupin: 'Who was in your sitting room during that interval? Say four-thirty on Tuesday, and ten or eleven yesterday morning?' 'If you had ever lived in a vicarage you wouldn't ask questions like that; people just walk in and out all day long. When Andrew asked me to marry him, he said he was afraid I should find it very quiet here, and what he meant I can't imagine! If I wanted quiet I'd rather retire to the Tower of Babel with a saxophone.' Lupin enlists old society pals Duds and Tommy Lethbridge, as well as Andrew's nephew, a British secret service agent, to get at the truth. Lupin refuses to believe that Diana Lloyd, 38-year-old author of the children's detective stories, could've done the deed and casts her net over the other parishioners. But all the suspects seem so nice - very much more so than the victim. Who Killed the Curate was first published in 1944 and was the first of four murder mysteries penned by Joan Coggin (1898-1980). Dancing with Death (1947) was reissued most successfully by Galileo in 2022. Her works have very strong plots and are written in a stylish and humorous manner which delighted critics at the time, and will surely equally delight the growing audience for Golden Age Detective fiction.

John Rutherford, bookseller and fiction writer, discovers the bludgeoned corpse of a policeman. He takes the policeman's overturned bike to rural Paulsfield police station, two miles away, to report the crime. There he finds Sgt. Martin who initiates calls to a doctor, a photographer and Inspector Charlton. But it is not these two lead detectives who are the most interesting characters of the book. That honour goes to 19-year-old bookshop assistant George; a detective story addict and keen on solving the various mysteries surrounding Johnson's violent death.

The novel is in two sections. In the first, the narrator, Vaughn Tudor, describes the formation of the small amateur theatre group, in a sleepy village on the South Coast in the period leading up to the Second World War. But then in the second half, after the revelation of the identity of the victim and the calling in of Witting's series detective Inspector Charlton to investigate, the reader finds out that there were rather a lot of people who had cause to visit that little theatre on the night of the murder...

The 27th century: beleaguered elites decide to melt the Greenland icecap. Why? - to open up a new continent, for colonisation by the unruly masses. How? - by harvesting the primordial heat of the Earth from Iceland's volcanoes. Nature fights back, and it all goes horribly wrong...

Alastair Reid was a poet, essayist, translator and traveller, who was instrumental in bringing the poems of Borges and Neruda into English. He died in 2014. Reid started to write for the New Yorker in the late 50's and contributed poetry and travel pieces for nearly 40 years. His poetry came back into circulation in Scotland in 1978, when Canongate published a collection of his work - including some translations - in a pocket-size hardback, bringing his work across these genres to the attention of a new generation. Now readers can enjoy his collected works in this new edition from Galileo.

Alfred Doblin (1878-1957) composed his epic trilogy of South America under difficult circumstances of exile. It was accessible on first publication in 1937-38 only outside Germany, and for only a couple of years before war broke out. The first postwar edition, like others of Doblin's works apart from Berlin Alexanderplatz, was little noticed in a Germany traumatised by Nazism and defeat. The epic is set mainly in South America, but its true focus is Europe. The urgent guiding proposition is: The Nazis did not emerge from nowhere.

This novel takes place over a year, a short while after the end of WW2, and begins very light-heartedly and comically with Penelope Stevenson, her brother Dick and her pregnant sister-in-law, Betty worrying about the guests they have coming - Lady Lupin and her husband, Andrew Hastings. Many jokes are had about the guests, with the usual stereotypes clouding their perceptions of them. However, this is soon debunked by the young and vivacious Lady Lupin, who quickly warms to Betty and Dick. The seemingly idyllic country village, country house and family begin to crumble further as the weird power and role Penelope possess are revealed. For example, Betty may have just given birth, but the congratulations from well-meaning villagers (including from the admiration-struck local vicar Mr Baker) go to Penelope, a woman who slept through the entire event. She is a fascinating character in the novel, whose initial helpful nature and unselfishness start to peel away, with both Lady Lupin and Andrew beginning to see a much darker side to her. It is therefore not a surprise when Dick and Betty find Penelope shot in the garden. But was it suicide or murder? In life Penelope caused a lot of grief and pain, which the investigations by the police, Lady Lupin and her private detective friend Mr Borden expose, despite being viewed by the general populace as saintly and the epitome of the unselfish woman. But in death Penelope also causes further trouble as guilt-ridden, defensive and unreconciled to one another, Dick and Betty do not present a picture of innocence. Additionally, Penelope's death creates a vacuum, with many individuals acting out of character at her funeral, which also draws several annoying distant relatives that are comic genius on Coggin's part. With a pile of possible motives, multiple people confessing to murdering Penelope, and the suspiciously absent Colonel being nowhere to be found - despite the fact he went for a walk with Penelope on the fatal day - this is a mystery which will keep you guessing until the very end.

The death of a brilliant young scientist in the department of chemistry at Cambridge shocks both the university and the town. As the police scramble to investigate, Gillian Adams, in Cambridge for the summer, finds herself in the midst of the enquiry. Adams, a historian from Canada, is both linked to the victim by old friends and to the Cambridge police by her affair with Scotland Yard detective chief inspector Edward Gisborne. Venomous professional rivalries and a clandestine affair are only two of the possible explanations for the murder. When a second body turns up there appears to be no connection. Yet everybody knows that if the two deaths can be tied, the thread will lead to the murderer. In this compelling story, Nora Kelly, author of In The Shadow of King's, takes a new look at 'town and gown', showing us a Cambridge in which science, contemporary mores and old traditions produce a volatile mix.

Here is a delight: MacDonald Harris's colourful, fanciful, and moving Herma, the story of a wilful young woman who conquers the musical world of the Belle Epoque. Herma is many things: a glamorous story of a singer who rises from the choir of a country church to stardom at the Paris Opera: the parallel adventures of her agent and friendly enemy Fred Hite, filled with the excitement of the early days of aviation; and a provocative sexual intrigue whose twinned her and heroine, not brother and sister, are forbidden to each other by the secret that lies at the centre of their odd and intimate relationship. From its evocative beginnings in the pastoral Southern California of the turn of the century, Herma moves on to larger worlds: first the brash, adolescent San Francisco of the period, then the Earthquake, then the international world of opera in Paris at the most luxurious, opulent, and decadent moment of its history. Erotic, bejewelled, crowded with incident and a big, vivid cast of characters, Herma is MacDonald Harris's richest and most complex novel.

MacDonald Harris's posthumously published novel is set in the 1920's against a backdrop of airships, mysticism, erotic love and a Europe that is picking itself up after WW1. The League of Nations is a giant airship constructed by the same factory in Germany that made the Zeppelins, and is owned by Moira, the leader of a semi-religious cult. The captain is Georg von Plautus, a Prussian WW1 Zeppelin commander who harbours a terrible secret from a bombing raid over London in 1916. Moira's followers have embarked with her on an extraordinary voyage in this airship to a place that she calls Giaconda. The novel explores the lives of these characters on board taking the reader through a heady mix of sexual entanglements, metaphysics, and Blavatsky and Swedenborg influenced seances. Towards the end of the novel it is apparent that all of Moira's devotees have one thing in common. This is perhaps MacDonald Harris' most surprising novel, even bearing in mind that each one of his 15 published novels never failed to surprise the reader of the preceding one. The Carp Castle was completed shortly before his death in 1993 and seems to have disappeared at this time. Its re-emergence followed the very successful re-publication of his most successful book The Balloonist which left critics in the UK asking for more, and is part of the renaissance of this immensely talented writer who had so many followers and critical admirers in the 1980's

First published in 1934, In The Cairngorms is Nan Shepherd's only book of poems. It took her twenty- five years to write these forty-six poems. Each is possessed of a fierce intensity; together, they offer glimpses into what she once called the burning heart of life'. Shepherd's lifelong acquaintance with the Scottish mountains was a spiritual as well as a geographical exploration: in the Cairngorms she discovered both elemental beauty and profound metaphysical mystery. Her huge gifts as a poet were to convey these discoveries in language that remains strange and thrilling.'

Everybody loves a list but this is a list of major ambition: namely, to select the best 100 novels in the English language, published from the late 17th century to the present day. This list has been built up week by week in The Observer since September 2013, and selected by writer and Observer editor Robert McCrum. With a short critique on each book, this is a real delight for literary lovers.

In 1953, an unknown German writer with a 1000-page novel met with astonishment and success. Paul Celan hailed it as 'a genuine work of art' Siegfried Lenz praised it as an 'event' and, in 1999, Maarten Hart, writing for Die Zeit, proclaimed it 'the greatest book of the century'. Based on the author's experiences in the 1930s in Mallorca, The Island of Second Sight follows Vigoleis (the author's alter ego) as he is pursued by Nazis and Francoists. He and his wife Beatrice embark on a series of unpredictable and surreal adventures to survive.

Deia is a small and idyllic village on the north-west coast of Mallorca, famous for being the home of Robert Graves for much of his life, but subsequently becoming a magnet for artists, authors and film stars (and latterly a location in the BBC thriller series, The Night Manager). But in this fast moving crime novel, it also becomes the centrepiece for a series of murders connected to the embezzlement of an extraordinary [100 million fortune...

'If there was ever a writer for the people, Joyce was that writer. But there is a need for the kind of pilot-commentary I attempt to provide. After nearly fifty years of reading Joyce it seems only right that I should pass on what I have learned of his methods to those who come fresh to his riches.' Anthony Burgess' own foreword to his work on Joyce establishes the purpose and the tone of his study. Vigorous, humorous and perceptive, his commentary is an excellent introduction and a valuable companion to the reading of Joyce.

First published in 1985, this hugely entertaining portrait of Lawrence will be gladly received back into the literary fold. There is never a dull moment in this incisive biography as Burgess makes the case most eloquently and convincingly that Lawrence is one of the very greatest of English writers. Flame into Being examines Lawrence's work in its entirety, not just the well-known novels, and how, in the years following the second World War, he gained recognition as one of the twentieth century's most original and outstanding authors.

John Richard Jefferies was an English nature writer, noted for his depiction of English rural life in essays, books of natural history, and novels. Since his death his books have enjoyed intermittent spells of popularity, but he is still largely unknown. Jefferies, however, has been an inspiration to a number of more prominent writers - W.H. Hudson, Edward Thomas, Henry Williamson and John Fowles are among those who have acknowledged their debt to him. The selection of Jefferies' work collected in this volume will surely help re-establish Jefferies as one of the greatest writers in this genre.

Edward Thomas (1878-1917) was a British poet, essayist, and novelist. He is commonly considered a war poet, although few of his poems deal directly with his war experiences, and his career in poetry only came after he had already been a successful writer and literary critic. Edward Thomas compiled a number of anthologies on nature, literature and poetry. One of them is an inspiration for this book, the collection A Pocket Book of Poems and Songs For the Open Air. This miscellany gathers some of the greatest moments of his writing, both in poetry and prose.

John Muir: A Miscellany is a gathering together of a rich and hugely entertaining collection of Muir's writings. Although he is famed in the USA for both his writing and his accomplishments in helping establish the US National Parks system, he is still relatively unknown this side of the Atlantic. This book may well change this.

In the 1930s, the writer and poet, Nan Shepherd was one of North-East Scotland's best known literati, and a highly respected member of the Scottish modernist movement. Her image now graces the new Scottish [5 note; her book The Living Mountain has become a classic and sells in its thousands. Wild Geese is a fantastic new collection of her work, never-before-published, including essays, poems and short stories.
