First Published in 1969. The Industrial Revolution in Great Britain has probably attracted more attention than any other historical period or phenomenon. Students of economic growth, of business history, and of social revolution have long delved in this rich and fascinating field. Yet new veins continue to be discovered, as new areas are surveyed and new drillings undertaken. This book is the outcome of such research activities intermittently spread over more than ten years.

This collection of essays by both Western and East European experts examines the efforts to develop strategies for dealing with the environmental crisis both by governments and at the grassroots level of newly emerging green movements.

First Published in 1979. This book represents the work done by its author to begin to lay the ground musically and philosophically for enormous tasks that still remain to be done and may require a team of researchers in various fields relating to experiential phenomena. Coming from a background of musicological studies as well as active musical performance, the author's orientation is different from that of the professional philosopher as such, who is apt to understand sound phenomena in more generalized manner rather than addressing himself to specifics in music and music theory. These essays trace the path taken by the author in the last years and are studies that were a necessary prelude to a systematic work on the philosophy of musical sound, a work that is in preparation. Most important has been the attempt to show the qualitative steps taken from Helmholtz through German and French phenomenology to the beginnings of a dialectic of musical sound.

First Published in 1975. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor & Francis, an informa company.

This book discusses the methods for determination of data on thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, unit surface conductance or the heat transfer coefficient of foods and agricultural materials. It includes the applications of thermal properties in relation to cooling and thermal expansion.

"'Irmgard Bartenieff has a profound knowledge of the human body and how it moves. I am delighted that this will now be made available to many more people.'." -- George Balanchine of Director, New York City Ballet"'Irmgard Bartenieff's pioneering work in the multiple applications of Labananalysis has had a transforming influence on many areas of movement training. Her careful and detailed development of the spatial principles into active corrective work has illuminated and altered the training of people as varied as dancers, choreographers, physical therapists, movement and dance therapists, and psychotherapists. Anthropologists and non-verbal communication researchers have found their world view necessarily altered by her fundamental innovations. The field of body/mind work will need to adapt to include her clear working through of basic principles.'." -- Kayla Kazahn Zalk of President, American Dance Guild

First Published in 1982. Comprehensive and controversial, this book presents an overview of the energy options available and their attendant risks. The entire energy cycle- from raw material to final energy production- is examined in depth so that accurate and detailed assessments can be made of the risks of energy options.

Written to fill the need for establishing a point of reference in the copious but scattered literature of the field. The Catalogue of Radial Velocities of Galaxies is a comprehensive survey of radical velocities or redshifts of the galaxies in the universe. It lists all available measurements for each Galaxy including Russian citations from the measurement of the first radial velocity by Slipher in 1914 through December 1980. In a unique feature it includes optical and radio measurements for all galaxies in both the northern and southern hemispheres. In bringing together uniformly and concisely all published references, the Catalogue affords readers the opportunity to evaluate the data and determine which measurement or measurements represent a ‘good’ measurement for the radial velocity of each Galaxy. In preparing the Catalogue the authors not only compiled the available data, but checked identifications, re measured precise coordinates, and noted discordant redshift values. In addition to including more galaxies than any other existing redshift catalogue, the work reflects the most thorough research and careful evaluation. Indeed the availability in a single scrupulously documented source of all original measurements will save researchers incalculable time and effort. The catalogue sites 967 references from which radial velocities of 8250 galaxies have been obtained. Since many galaxies were measured more than once, the total number of radio velocities listed is 13,672. The galaxies are ordered by increasing right ascension, with particular attention paid to providing accurate positions and names. Radio galaxies and Seyfert galaxies are identified. Lists of all Messier Galaxies (39), Arp peculiar objects (221), Vorontsov/Velyaminov interacting galaxies (230) and Markarian galaxies (773), whose radial velocities appear in the Catalogue are also given in the appendices.

Your Move: A New Approach to the Study of Movement and Dance establishes a fresh and original framework for looking at dance. In examining the basic elements of dance - the Alphabet of Movement - and using illustrations of movement technique and notation symbols it provides a new way to see, to teach and to choreograph dance. This book gives a list of primary actions upon which all physical activity is gased, focusing on both the functional and expressive sides of movement. It draws upon the author's broad experience in ballet, modern and ethnic dance to reinterpret movement and to shed new light on the role of movement in dance. Your Move is an important book not only for dancers but also for instructors in sport and physical therapy. Each copy of Your Move comes complete with exercise sheets, which can also be purchased separately. A teacher's guide has also been designed providing notes on each chapter, approaches to the exploration of movement, interpretation of the reading studies, additional information of motif description and answers to the exercise sheets. An optional audio cassette, with music written and recorded especially for use with the book, is also available.

The author takes a new approach to teaching notation through movement exercises, thus enlarging the scope of the book to teachers of movement and choreography as well as the traditional dance notation students.Updated and enlarged to reflect the most recent scholarship and through a series of exercises, this book guides students through:movement, stillness, timing, shaping, accents travelling direction, flexion and extension rotations, revolutions and turns supporting balance relationships. All of these movements are related to notation, so the student learns how to notate and describe the movements as they are performed.

Derives from an unprecedented seminar held at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs in November 1990. At the seminar, leading Western diplomatic and military historians and Vietnam scholars met with prominent Vietnamese Communists to reflect on the Vietnam War.

First published in 1980. The following papers represent a selection of studies which provide such an insight into human food behavior during development. It is hoped that readers will be encouraged to participate in this new quest for knowledge. The time has surely come to document carefully the food practices of different societies. The authors’ hope there will be similar and parallel attempts to evaluate the health and disease status so that the relationships between diet and disease may be clarified.

This book discusses the principles of controlling thinking in the solution of inventive problems that are transposed to the organization of creative thinking in any sphere of human activity. It is aimed at the engineer and also comprehensible to people who do not work with technology.

First Published in 1988. This special issue of The Journal of Mathematical Sociology reports continuing work on affect control theory — a theory of social behavior that deals with role actions such as those of doctors toward patients, with deviant behaviors such as those of muggers toward victims, and with creative responses to events such as sanctioning a misbehaved child or labeling a deviant.

First Published in 1984.  This is the second volume in a series on musicology and related areas edited by F. Joseph Smith. Deciphering the specific social characteristics of music has long lagged behind the analytical dissection of musical composition and biographical musicology. The essays in this volume have been produced in an attempt to redress the balance. The sociology of music as examined here is an investigation into the ways social formations come together in musical structures. These essays specifically address the problem of our neutralized music consciousness, the separation of music from the social context and the artificial insulation of musical understanding from the realms of social meanings. One theme in these essays concerns the struggle against ideological distortions arising from the insulation of music from its sociological context. The author argues that there is a stronger connection between music and society than is generally assumed.

First published in 1995. Pontryagin, one of the foremost thinkers in modern mathematics, the second volume in this four-volume set examines the nature and processes that make up topological groups. Already hailed as the leading work in this subject for its abundance of examples and its thorough explanations, the text is arranged so that readers can follow the material either sequentially or schematically. Stand-alone chapters cover such topics as topological division rings, linear representations of compact topological groups, and the concept of a lie group.

First Published in 1987. This study presents the background for the sacred musical patronage at the court, with specific reference to the polyphonic settings of the Mass Ordinary - during the reign of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II (1576-1612). One function of the present work is to collect the various relevant data concerning the chapel and the Mass, and to demonstrate basic relationships at the court. This study approaches the chapel of Rudolf II through archival research, musical sources, and comparing the compositional process of its composers. The goal is a better understanding of the sacred musical practice at the chapel.

First Published in 1988. This is Volume 5 of seven in the Musicology: A Book Series. Witnesses and Scholars, is a collection studies in musical biography. The series covers a creative range of musical topics, from historical and theoretical subjects to social and philosophical studies. Volumes thus far published show the extent of this broad spectrum. disciplinary studies, ethnomusicological works, and performance analyses. With this series, it is the aim to expand the field and definition of musical exploration and research.

First Published in 1988. Though many standard musicological reference works document the use of the trombone from its beginning in the middle of the seventeenth century, and then from Mozart to the present, few deal with the intervening years. This book reproduces the texts from two dozen treatises, dictionaries, and encyclopaedias, along with English translations, published between 1697 and 1811. It provides an overview of the use of the trombone during that time in America and seven European countries and examines its use in choral music, opera, symphonic music and military music.

How do conscious experience, subjectivity, and free will arise from the brain and the body? Even in the late 20th century, consciousness was considered to be beyond the reach of science. Now, understanding the neural mechanisms underlying consciousness is recognized as a key objective for 21st century science. The cognitive neuroscience of consciousness is a fundamentally multidisciplinary enterprise, involving powerful new combinations of functional brain imaging, computational modelling, theoretical innovation, and basic neurobiology. Its progress will be marked by new insights not only into the complex brain mechanisms underlying consciousness, but also by novel clinical approaches to a wide range of neurological and psychiatric disorders. These innovations are well represented by the contents of the present volume. A target article by Victor Lamme puts forward the contentious position that neural evidence should trump evidence from behaviour and introspection, in any theory of consciousness. This article and its several commentaries advance one of the fundamental debates in consciousness science, namely whether there exists non-reportable phenomenal consciousness, perhaps dependent on local rather than global neural processes. Other articles explore the wider terrain of the new science of consciousness. For example, Maniscalco and colleagues use theta-burst transcranial magnetic stimulation to selectively impair metacognitive awareness; Massimini and coworkers examine changes in functional connectivity during anesthesi, and Vanhaudenhuyse et al describe innovations in detecting residual awareness following traumatic brain injury. Together, then contents of this volume exemplify the `grand challenge of consciousness' in combining transformative questions about the human condition with a tractable programme of experimental and theoretical research.

Chemically Modified Surfaces is a monographic series designed to serve as a medium for the publication of new scientific results concerning surface modification by means of chemical reaction.
