The definitive work on structural systems - clear, visual, timeless Structure Systems by Heino Engel has been regarded as a definitive standard work on the typology of structural systems in architecture since its first publication in 1997. Clear, accessible, and visually striking, it illustrates the interplay between structure and form—without technical overload. Focusing on archetypal structural systems, this bilingual edition (German and English) offers a visual grammar of structural forms, making it ideal for education, design, and inspiration. With over 500 outstanding drawings and model photographs, a systematic presentation of the most important structural types, and numerous impulses for creative design approaches in architecture and engineering, the book convinces both visually and conceptually. Proven for over 25 years. A work that unites tradition, opens up creative freedom, and serves as a visual toolbox.

Denmark has long since written international design history. Today, Danish furniture, textiles, and home appliances and utensils from the sixties and seventies are more popular than ever. The beautiful pieces are meanwhile for sale at design galleries and have become a rarity at flea markets. In short, Nordic items for everyday use have become internationally sought-after trophies for sophisticates. This publication provides an extensive overview of those everyday objects that have to this day written design history both in Denmark as well as worldwide. Along with thirty-two leading scholars and journalists, the head of the library and research at the Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen, Lars Dybdahl, advances into the fascinating history of the individual objects. Playfully presented and situated in their historical context, the catalogue sheds new light on this unique world of objects.

What does art know? This expanded second edition of Reclaiming Artistic Research explores artistic research in dialogue with 24 artists worldwide, reclaiming it from academic associations of the term. Embracing artists’ dynamic engagement with other fields, it foregrounds the material, spatial, embodied, organizational, choreographic, and technological ways of knowing and unknowing specific to contemporary artistic inquiry. The second edition features a new text by the author and four new artist dialogues to reflect on the changing stakes of artistic research in the wake of the global pandemic, a widespread reckoning with social justice, the growing role of artificial intelligence, and the urgent reality of climate change.

The photobook visually and materially contextualizes arrangements of photographs and brings them into a sensually tangible form. The book format, the materiality of the paper, and the type of binding have just as much effect on the viewer as the selection of images, their positioning in the layout, typography, and texts. The artist and theorist Bettina Lockemann provides an approach to the medium from a research perspective: considering the photobook as an independent subject of art studies, phenomenological discussions complement methodological lines of thought. An important contribution to the photobook as an independent field of research, Lockemann elaborates precise terms for analyzing this medium of renditions. Through a practice-based examination of contemporary photobooks, this reader gets to the root of the field of photo books.

Lucas Cranach the Elder created around 500 works during his lifetime. With his portraits of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchton and as court painter to Frederick the Wise, he became one of the most sought-after painters of the Reformation. At the same time, Cranach was the first to translate the Italian Renaissance tradition of the life-size nude into art north of the Alps; his lascivious, barely veiled depiction of Venus, the goddess of love, bears witness to this. On the occasion of the large Cranach exhibition at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Austrian writer Teresa Präauer explores the work of this busy prince of painters from A to Z. She focuses not only on Cranach's art, but also on the society that surrounded him, the subjects he painted, and the events that shaped his development.

Edward Hopper’s world-famous paintings articulate an idiosyncratic view of modern life. With his impressive subjects, independent pictorial vocabulary, and virtuoso play of colors, Hopper continues to influence to this day the image of the United States in the first half of the twentieth century. He began his career as an illustrator and became famous around the globe for his oil paintings. They testify to his great interest in the effects of color and his mastery in depicting light and shadow. The Fondation Beyeler is devoting its large exhibition in the spring of 2020 to Hopper’s iconic images of the vast American landscape. The catalogue gathers together all of the paintings, watercolors, and drawings from the 1910s to the 1960s on display in the exhibition, and supplements them with essays focused on the subject of depicting landscape.

How Graffiti Culture Challenged Art’s ParametersGraffiti's avant-garde nature and transgressive relationship with private property challenge art norms. Born in the 1960s, it reached a fever pitch in 1990s New York after the end of the train era in 1989. Artists adapted, using the streets and architecture to combat alienation. It became a high-stakes game, blending aesthetics and lifestyle into a global blueprint that reconnected art with the pulse of human existence. These artists are modern-day tricksters with a deliberate counterpoint to an ordered art world. Focusing on the 1990s—a decade of unpredictability and innovation—this book traces graffiti’s evolution and its sensibilities within broader social currents. Through striking visuals and incisive text, we follow their vanguard’s vision of creativity: combinational, exploratory, and transformational. This is the definitive chronicle of an era that redefined art’s function in the world. 300 artists featured including: CASE 2, CAYPER, COST, DESA, DOLT, EARSNOT, FCEE, GHOST, GIZ, GREY, JA, KEZ5, LES, MQ, NATO, NOXER, RATE, REMO, REVS, RYNO, SANE, SENTO, SETUP, SKUF, VFR.

Some 40 carefully chosen juxtapositions of masterpieces by both artists trace a dialogue that ranks among the most fascinating in art history. This publication brings Pablo Picasso's (1881-1973) encounter with the Cretan-born old master Doménikos Theotokópoulos, better known as El Greco (1541-1614), vividly to life.El Greco’s unmistakable painting style won him considerable fame in his day. Soon after his death, however, his work was largely forgotten. It was only around 1900 that an El Greco revival was launched, with Picasso serving on the front lines. His engagement with the Greek-Spanish master not only went far deeper than has previously been assumed but also lasted much longer. From his first encounter with El Greco's works shortly before 1900 until the end of his life, Picasso not only referenced but engaged in a fascinating artistic dialogue with the old master.

Pierre Huyghe is considered one of the most radical contemporary artists. His extensive works are conceived as speculative fictions challenging our perception of reality and consciousness. This publication, released on the occasion of the artist’s solo exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler, is not a classical catalogue of works. Instead of a documentary overview, it offers a unique and fascinating “mental journey.” The book combines images and research on recent works with sketches, notes, and text fragments. A cluster of ideas and images in which we can navigate through, reflecting the creative process. A visual archive exploring Huyghe’s complex universe.

A bridger of worlds A poet, painter and philosopher, Etel Adnan’s life and work was shaped by a profound and vibrant exchange between Arab and Western cultures. In 2024, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Dhahran is organizing the first major exhibition in Saudi Arabia dedicated to one of the most important voices in modern American-Arab literature and visual art. Living a life between Lebanon, France and California, and influenced by her travels to Mexico and North Africa, Adnan’s work is characterized by her openness to different media and languages, both literary and visual. Refusing to continue writing in French to show solidarity with Algeria during the Algerian War of Independence, she began to paint using bright colors as a universal language. Alongside this, leporellos became her signature medium: the pocket-sized books unfold into several meters long, lavishly illustrated tapestries of poetry and painting. Opening up new perspectives, this catalogue brings together a large number of works from all periods that emphasize the richness and diversity of Adnan’s oeuvre, and explores various themes essential to a deeper understanding of her work. A comprehensive chronology will also enrich the book, making it not least a reference tool in Arabic.

New exhibition catalogue on Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers.Marcel Broodthaers‘s work is characterized by a complex exploration of the relationship of text and image. This catalog raisonné, prepared by WIELS and developed in close collaboration with the Marcel Broodthaers Succession, is the first to include all of the Belgian conceptual artist’s industrial poems created between 1968 and 1972. Borrowing from the aesthetics of industrially manufactured plastic signs, Broodthaers’s multi-layered, often enigmatic pictorial poems testify to his interest in the entanglements of language, punctuation, and symbols. In blurring the boundaries between word and image, painting and object, new levels of meaning are made visible. The index is supplemented by a collection of Broodthaers’s drawings, writings and “open letters” as well as scholarly contributions that position the poems as a crucial group of works within the artist’s oeuvre.

The recently deceased French-American sculptor Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) was one of the most important artists of the last century. Her fleshy blobs, skeletal spiders and the aggressive fragility of her work offered a new solution to the antagonism between the figurative and the abstract that had previously been part and parcel of modernism. Bourgeois herself provided a unique interpretive level to modern art through the uses she made of childhood trauma, family life and sexuality. This accessible study serves as both an ideal introduction to the central themes of the late artist's oeuvre and as a commemoration of her one-hundredth birthday. Over the course of nine chapters, it examines her life, her exploration of the works of other artists and the transformation of her emotions into such works of art as the now iconic pieces "Destruction of the Father," "Fillette," "Cells" and "Maman."

Fred Herzog is known for his unusual use of colour in the fifties and sixties, a time when art photography was almost exclusively associated with black and white imagery. The Canadian photographer worked almost exclusively with Kodachrome slide film for over 50 years, and only in the past decade has technology allowed him to make archival pigment prints that match the exceptional color and intensity of the Kodachrome slide. In this respect, his photographs can be seen as a pre-figuration of the New Color photographers of the seventies. This book will bring together over 230 images, many never before reproduced, and will feature essays by acclaimed authors David Campany and Hans-Michael Koetzle. Fred Herzog will be the most comprehensive publication on this important photographer to date.

Magical images that defy time from the grand master of conceptual photography. Through his expansive exploration of the possibilities of still images, the internationally renowned artist and photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto has created some of the most alluringly enigmatic photographs of our time; pictures that are meticulously crafted and deeply thought-provoking, familiar yet tantalisingly ambiguous. Hiroshi Sugimoto: Time Machine is a comprehensive survey of work produced over the past five decades, featuring selections from all of Sugimoto’s major photographic series, as well as lesser-known works that illuminate his innovative, conceptually-driven approach to making pictures. Texts by a collection of international writers, artists and scholars - including Geoffrey Batchen, Edmund de Waal, Mami Kataoka, Ralph Rugoff, Lara Strongman and Margaret Wertheim - will highlight his work’s philosophical yet playful inquiry into the nature of representation and art, our understanding of time and memory, and the paradoxical character of photography as a medium suited to both documenting and invention.

Previously unseen imagery from the archives of a pioneering figure in color photography Fred Herzog was a master of color photography. His iconic Kodachrome street shots from the 1950s and 1960s capture urban life in warm red-orange tones, offering precise observations of people and city movements. Poetic, witty and always respectful, his images create an intimate atmosphere. After moving to Vancouver in 1953, Herzog built a vibrant visual tribute to the city. He also traveled to the US, Barbados, Curaçao, Guatemala and Mexico, his Leica always in hand. In an era dominated by black-and-white photography, Herzog's use of color was groundbreaking. His bestseller Modern Color remains celebrated worldwide. Now, newly released photographs from his archive, managed by Equinox Gallery, continue his legacy, offering fresh insight into his unique perspective. These images not only preserve Herzog's vision but also reaffirm his place as a pioneer of modern color photography.

In 1966, Jan Dibbets had not yet developed a distinct artistic oeuvre. However, three chance encounters pointed him toward his path. His first exhibitions in Amsterdam revealed an abstraction that would eventually evolve into a groundbreaking photographic practice. Dibbets became a mediator, connecting artists, curators, and institutions across Europe and the United States. From ephemeral installations to photographic investigations of perspective, light, and time, he pushed the boundaries of perception. This book traces the decade in which chance and invention became intertwined. It depicts an artist who did not merely react to his era but shaped it, taking a familiar medium and transforming it into something fundamentally new.

Hardly any other epoch in art history has been marked by as many profound changes as the Late Gothic was in the fifteenth century. Inspired by Netherlandish role models, depictions of light and shadow, body and space, became increasingly more realistic. Everyday life found entry into the arts. With the invention of printing, images and texts were distributed to an extent previously unheard of. Artists such as Nicolaus Gerhaert and Martin Schongauer became widely known and influenced the development of the visual arts throughout Europe and across all genres. Featuring a wide selection of works, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin present the first extensive exhibition of Late Gothic art in the German-speaking regions. Its comparison and contrast of the various genres turns the catalogue into a handbook for the arts at the threshold of the modern era.

Milkyways is a collection of essays by artist Camille Henrot, exploring the ambivalence of motherhood and the process of creation in both art-making and life. Each chapter delivers a cosmos of references in literature, cartoons, art history, psychoanalysis, and more—from ancient maternity myths to modern maternity wards; from Marcel Proust to Maggie Nelson to Hélène Cixous. Alongside illustrations of the artist's work in painting, drawing, and sculpture, Henrot's perspectives in writing oscillate freely between the personal and the societal, the obvious and the more complex, the visceral and the utterly mundane.Milkyways was originally conceived for Republik magazine on invitation by Antje Stahl. Written with Jacob Bromberg, Antje Stahl, and Léa Trudel.CAMILLE HENROT (*1978, Paris) is one of the most influential voices in contemporary art today, with a practice encompassing drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and film. Inspired by references from literature, psychoanalysis, cultural anthropology and the banality of everyday life, she questions what it means to be both a private individual and a global subject in an increasingly connected and over-stimulated world. Henrot has had numerous solo exhibitions worldwide in venues including Middelheim Museum, Antwerp; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; New Museum, New York; and Art Sonje Center, Seoul. She lives and works in New York City.

Local communities in a global context Conceived as an archive, the book brings together the experiences of Frequencies, a global participatory project initiated by multimedia artist Oscar Murillo in 2013. Part of the artist’s multimedia practice, Frequencies addresses the notion of community through the lens of its making. For over a decade, it has involved members of Murillo’s family, studio team and collaborators, visiting schools around the globe, fixing raw canvas onto classroom desks, and inviting the students to freely mark, write and draw on them for a period of approximately six months. Murillo has collected an archive of canvases, which he presented in various interactive exhibitions. This elegant volume features a lay-flat binding, a dust jacket and richly produced slipcase.

Capturing the human in painting Frans Hals is one of the most important portrait painters of all time. Like Rembrandt, the famous Dutch Baroque master’s striking portraits of the bourgeoisie and social outsiders are distinguished by their extraordinary vividness and accurate depiction. His sketch-like paintings, executed with bold brushstrokes, had a decisive influence on modernist painting. This comprehensive publication coincides with the first major survey exhibition of Hals’ oeuvre in more than thirty years.

A Photographic Pilgrimage to the Temples of Modernism Sacred Modernity documents the dramatic shift in ecclesiastical architecture across post-war Europe. Spurred on by the modernizing impulses of the Second Vatican Council in the early 1960s, and in search for an appropriate architectural language that showed that the Catholic Church was still relevant to the modern world, this was the period when the church married the atheist architect, and bore a child of pure form. Among these structures, some exude a joyful antagonism, while others emanate a cold minimalism. Boldly designed, outrageous and provocative for their time, the aesthetic of this period still ignites great debate between modernists and traditionalists. Half a century on, this study traces how their materials and ideals have matured and patinated. Remaining amongst the most unique buildings within our public sphere, they are future visions from the near past that seem to anticipate societies current shift away from organized religion towards an individual spirituality. The book represents the first attempt by a photographer to collate the religious architecture of the mid-century high modern years that took many forms, from Brutalism to Structural Expressionism, under a singular artistic vision.

"As a politically thinking person, I am not a morally thinking person.” While German painting of the postwar period essentially concerned itself with coming to terms with the past and presenting it in gestures ranging from the heroic to the ironic, Daniel Richter focuses on positioning himself in the present. Time and again he devises new ways of being “modern” in a medium that has long been labeled old-fashioned and anachronistic. His pictures constantly challenge the spectator by their painterly and contextually excessive demands, but they do not lecture on moral issues. In five chapters featuring more than 200 examples of his works, the author Eva Meyer-Hermann traces the chronological development of Richter’s artistic output for the first time. The turns from abstraction to figuration and back again that until now have been described as abrupt, prove on closer examination to be a logical consequence and a sign of conscious artistic action.

Suzanne Duchamp: Dada's hidden gem Suzanne Duchamp came from a famous family of artists: her brothers were Marcel Duchamp, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, and Jacques Villon. As a Dadaist and painter, she developed a delicate, cryptic, and humorous visual language and made her own unique contribution to the history of art. Nevertheless, she has remained largely unknown to a wider public. This catalogue accompanying her comprehensive retrospective in Zurich and Frankfurt curated by Talia Kwartler in collaboration with Cathérine Hug and Ingrid Pfeiffer presents work that Duchamp created during her association with Dada as well as further works works from earlier and later decades. Many of the over 80 artworks, documents, and photographs are being published for the first time. Complemented by latest scholarly findings by internationally renowned authors, this book thus gives Suzanne Duchamp the recognition she deserves.

This catalogue presents the first comprehensive study of the Italian architectural drawings in the Cronstedt Collection in the Nationalmuseum Stockholm, discussing 181 drawings dating from around 1570 to around 1620. Among them are works by Francesco da Volterra, Carlo Maderno and other Roman architects, executed for churches, chapels, palaces, gardens, and fountains—many constituting primary and almost unknown sources for late Mannerist and early Baroque architecture. Also included are plans and architectural details by French draughtsmen, meticulously documenting ancient monuments, as well as buildings by the Renaissance masters Bramante, Antonio da Sangallo, Michelangelo, and Vignola.Italian Architectural Drawings proposes new attributions in the light of recent scholarship, based on close examination of the drawings’ material (paper, medium, technique, mounting). Comparative illustrations and a photographic catalogue of the watermarks complete the volume..

Few materials have experienced a similar revaluation in contemporary art as clay has in the past few years. This timely publication accompanies a large-scale exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, London, exploring how contemporary artists are using clay and ceramics in inventive and surprising ways, and pushing the boundaries of the medium. Featuring the work of over 20 international artists—from Grayson Perry to Woody De Othello—an introductory essay by curator Cliff Lauson, a text on the history of fine art and ceramics by writer and critic Amy Sherlock, and a round table discussion with artists from the exhibition, this catalogue is a meaningful contribution to the ongoing conversation about the relationship between art and craft.

How do you represent the divine and the central miracles of Christianity? Divine Presence explores this question through the captivating world of marble representations in Late Gothic and Early Renaissance art. This groundbreaking study reveals how painters – including Fra Angelico, Bellini, Crivelli and Mantegna – transformed depictions of marble from mere decoration into a powerful theological tool.
