Attempted suicide is the main risk factor for suicide. The Attempted Suicide Short Intervention Program (ASSIP) described in this manual is an innovative brief therapy that has proven in published clinical trials to be highly effective in reducing the risk of further attempts. ASSIP is the result of the authors' extensive practical experience in the treatment of suicidal individuals. The emphasis is on the therapeutic alliance with the suicidal patient, based on an initial patient-oriented narrative interview. The four therapy sessions are followed by continuing contact with patients by means of regular letters. This clearly structured manual starts with an overview of suicide and suicide prevention, followed by a practical, step-by-step description of this highly structured treatment. It includes numerous checklists, handouts, and standardized letters for use by health professionals in various clinical settings.

The new standard in psychodynamic diagnostics for clinical practice and research.Provides the science behind assessing and treating individuals via psychodynamic techniques to psychotherapy. Outlines most fitting diagnostic tests and foci for assessment and treatment. Includes relevant case examples and working materials TheOperationalized Psychodynamic Diagnosis (OPD) is a multiaxial psychodynamic diagnostic system that has become a widely accepted standard in psychodynamic diagnostics for clinical practice andresearch in many countries. Numerous empirical studies have demonstrated the validity of OPD findings. Through its clear operationalization of essential components of psychodynamic models - subjective experiences of illness and treatment ideas, problematic relationship patterns, intrapsychic conflicts, and personality functioning (i.e., structural integration) - the OPD enables reliable assessment, which is further aided by a wealth of case examples and working materials. The OPD-3 is organized in four axes: Axis I: Mental Disorders, Experience of Illness, and Prerequisites for TreatmentAxis II: Interpersonal relationsAxis III: ConflictAxis IV: StructureNew in OPD-3:Allaxes have been further refined with a stronger emphasis on dimensionally-oriented assessment. The dynamic interplay of the axes, especially between conflict and structure, is represented with greater differentiation. Since the OPD is based on a semi-standardized, clinically-oriented interview, this manual is equally suitable for both research and clinical practice. It is an indispensable companion for choosing the most fitting diagnostictests, determining the focus of treatment, and therapy planning.

Extensive evidence shows that six to ten sessions of narrative exposure therapy (NET) can be sufficient to provide considerable relief from events such as organized violence, torture, war, rape, and childhood abuse. The new manual is even more clearly structured and easy-to-follow, and includes new figures that help illustrate and guide the reader through the steps of NET. The theoretical sections offer a solid basis for carrying out the therapeutic intervention. The reader is then shown the NET approach step by step, with robust and straightforward practical advice and tools, including how to deal with challenging situations, e.g., how to go deeper when faced with the challenging dynamics of remembering trauma, and how to manage dissociation, avoidance, strong emotions, lost memories, or the sudden emergence of unexpected recollections from the past. NET therapy conversations and resulting narrations from trauma scenes demonstrate the level of narrative exposure details required. Finally, the importance of reading back the testimony to the individual is explained.A new section on the variations of NET details how to offer KIDNET for children and young people, FORNET for victims of trauma who are perpetrators of violence, NETfacts for communities, and ElderNET for older adults as well as online NET (eNET). Experienced therapists also get an idea of how NET is typically trained and how to facilitate NET exercises. Downloadable resources include an informed consent form and checklists for the therapist. This book is an invaluable resource for clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, counsellors, crisis workers, social workers, health workers, and physicians.

Handouts are available for use in daily practice. This is essential reading for clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, and researchers who encounter people who have substance-use problems.

This new English translation and 100th anniversary annotated edition of Psychodiagnostics, the only book published by Hermann Rorschach, showcases Rorschach's empiricism and the wide-ranging flexibility of his thinking - and thus helps us to understand why his iconic inkblot test has survived for a century and is still being used around the world, with the support of a strong evidence base. The expert translation team have collaborated closely to create an accessible rendition of Hermann Rorschach's presentation of the inkblot test that resulted from his empirical research experiments. Also included in this edition is the case study lecture on new developments in the test that Rorschach gave to the Swiss Psychoanalytic Society in 1922, just six weeks before his premature death. His book and the lecture are each accompanied by annotations for the first time, looking backward to the sources of Rorschach's terminology and also forward to how the test is used today. Drawings and photographs from the Rorschach Archive as well as introductory chapters on the history of the translation and the creation of Psychodiagnostics bring the story of this important figure and his work to life. This volume is essential reading for both historians and contemporary users of the inkblot test and anyone interested in exploring personality testing.

Using a developmental perspective, the authors offer a new, integrated model for supporting people with intellectual disability(ID). This concept builds upon recent advances in attachment informed approaches, by drawing upon a broader understanding of the social, emotional, and cognitive competencies of people with ID, which is grounded in developmental neuroscience andpsychology. The book explores in detail how challenging behaviour and mental health difficulties in people with ID arise when their basic emotional needs are not being met by those in the environment. Using individually tailored interventions, whichcomplement existing models of care, practitioners can help to facilitate maturational processes and reduce behaviour that ischallenging to others. As a result, the "fit" of a person within his or her individual environment can be improved. Case examplesthroughout the book illuminate how this approach works by targeting interventions towards the person's stage of emotionaldevelopment. This book will be of interest to a wide range of professionals working with people with ID, including: clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, learning disability nurses, speech and language therapists, and teachers in special education settings, as well as parents and caregivers.

This popular, practical resource for clinicians caring for trauma survivors has been fully updated and expanded. It remains a key toolkit of cognitive behavioral somatic therapy (CBST) techniques for clinicians who want to enhance their skills in treating trauma. Baranowsky and Gentry help practitioners find the right tools to guide trauma survivors toward growth and healing. Reinforcing this powerful intervention is the addition of a deeper emphasis on the preparatory phase for therapists, including the therapists' own ability to self-regulate their autonomic system during client encounters.Throughout the acclaimed book, an effective tri-phasic model for trauma treatment is constructed (safety and stabilization; working through trauma; reconnection with a meaningful life) as guiding principle, enabling a phased delivery that is fitted to the survivor's relational and processing style. The authors present, clearly and in detail, an array of techniques, protocols, and interventions for treating trauma survivors (cognitive, behavioral, somatic, and emotional/relational). These include popular and effective CBST techniques, approaches inspired by research on neuroplasticity, and interventions informed by polyvagal theory. Many techniques include links to video or audio material demonstrating how to carry-out the intervention. Further sections are devoted to forward-facing trauma therapy, a safe, effective, and accelerated method of treating trauma, and to clinician self-care.Over 40 video and audio demonstrations of many of the techniques are available for download. There are also 36 handouts for clients that can be downloaded and printed for clinical use.

Cultural differences in the presentation of social anxiety and the impact of this on assessment and treatment are highlighted, as are other adaptations to these techniques when working with diverse populations. A detailed case study is provided, outlining the presentation and course of treatment for a client with SAD. Downloadable handouts for clinical use are available in the appendix.

Real-life and real-time data collection methods offer unprecedented opportunities to advance the understanding and promotion of physical and mental health. Everyday assessments offer valuable insights into the behavior of individuals in their natural environment, providing a more complete picture than experimental studies conducted in the laboratory. These insights can also be used to design more effective interventions to promote physical and mental health, for example, by tailoring intervention content to individual states using predictive algorithms. This volume shows that person-level moderators and contextual factors are crucial to consider when studying everyday life behaviors in the context of health and disease. Contributions include studies that primarily use digitally supported, multidimensional assessments in everyday life over a period of up to four weeks. Self-report and objective measures, such as current social media use or different biological parameters, are also used to address research questions in clinical and health psychology.

Unique contributions from the world of the Rorschach with articles on trauma-related imagery in first responders, the conceptual and practical implications of Rorschach complexity, the Zulliger Test as a means of describing posttherapy changes, and an extended Rorschach inquiry with a client from Togo.A special section focuses on the history and theory of the Rorschach, including an exploration of the historical influences on Rorschach's Psychodiagnostics and an examination of the relationship between Rorschach's inkblot test and C. G. Jung's Word Association Test.

Integrating the role of culture is critical in preventing suicide: - Written by leading suicide researchers- Explores suicide in different cultural contexts- Highlights how to conduct culturally sensitive studiesThe increasing domination of individual approaches in suicide research and prevention, at the expense of socio-cultural factors, is severely harming our ability to prevent people dying by suicide. This is the clearly set out arguments and evidence in this lucid book by leading social scientists and suicide researchers. In the first section, the authors review and examine the fundamental issues of why "culture" is of vital importance in understanding and preventing suicidal behavior, what the "cultural meaning" of suicide is, and where current research and theory are leading us. This section ends with a thought-provoking perspective of suicide as a staged performance impacted by the suicide's culture. The second section then presents the results of a mixed-methods cross-cultural study on the cultural meanings of suicide in three contexts: Australian, Indian, and Italian. There follows an essay on a culturally specific form of suicide (sati in India), and a discussion of suicide among Roma and Irish Travellers. A further chapter describes a community-based suicide prevention strategy that has been developed for different populations, including people from migrant and refugee backgrounds and from low-and-middle-income Asian countries. In the concluding section, the authors highlight both the necessity and the challenges of conducting good culturally sensitive and meaningful studies, as well as suggesting ways to address these challenges. This book volume is essential reading for anyone involved in suicide research and prevention.
