Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason is a core text of modern philosophy. Presenting an examination of the nature of human reason, its central argument is that the way in which man perceives his environment is a direct consequence of the mind's ability to act on this environment and convert it into something meaningful. The work brings together two opposing schools of philosophy - rationalism and empiricism - and proposes a third way, which came to be known as transcendental idealism.Critique of Pure Reason proved to be hugely influential, not least on Marx, Heidegger and Nietzsche. Two Years Before the Mast is Richard Henry Dana Jr's captivating account of life as a common sailor on board a merchant ship in the early 1830s. Initially an attempt to remedy the author's eye fatigue, the two-year voyage from Boston to California had a transformative effect on Dana, whose diary gives a fascinating snapshot of pre-Gold Rush California. Dana captures the cruel conditions on board ship, the injustices of merchant seamen at the hands of brutally unforgiving captains, and the treacherous icy weather at Cape Horn. He portrays a rich cast of characters (human and non-human), including the people of Mexican California from whose ranches Dana would load and ship cowhides - then the most active trade along the California Coast. An iconic maritime memoir said to have influenced Herman Melville, Two Years Before the Mast remains one of America's greatest and most vivid seafaring tales. This recording includes Twenty-Four Years After, Dana's nostalgic reflection on his famous adventure.

Gertrude Stein's pioneering triptych Three Lives portrays the lives of three working-class women in the fictional American town of Bridgepoint (Baltimore). A progenitor of the 'stream of consciousness' technique later adopted by Joyce and Woolf, Stein takes us into the minds of three distinct women, who are each trapped in their societal positions. 'The Good Anna' follows a stern but kind German immigrant, 'Melanctha' the tragic life of an African-American woman of the same name, and 'The Gentle Lena' a dreamy and unopinionated servant whose passiveness becomes her undoing. The non-linear narratives, with their syntactical repetition and de-emphasis on plot, were unique for their time and owed much to the author's friendships with the artists Cezanne, Picasso and Matisse.

It is the year 778. The mighty French army, led by Emperor Charlemagne, confronts Saracen forces in the bloody Battle of Roncevaux Pass. In the course of this thrilling epic poem we follow the emperor's hot-headed nephew Roland into battle. We are privy to the deal struck between the Saracen king Marsilie and Roland's conniving stepfather Guene. We see both armour and bodies split by the blows of lances and swords, horses fall, and the heroic brotherhood of soldiery tested to its limit. At Charlemagne's command, even priests go to war. The story builds to a nail-biting climax - when a single trumpeting blast on an elephant's horn changes the course of history. All this and more is to be found in this magnificent tale of faith, honour, courage - and treachery.

George MacDonald, described by W.H. Auden as 'one of the most remarkable writers of the 19th century', was valued in his own time as an original thinker and spiritual guide. Of all his writing it is the fairy tales that have retained their fascination, and this collection includes all 11 stories, including The Light Princess, The Golden Key and The Wise Woman. The fairy tales feature the stock characters of traditional tales - fairies both good and bad, and children undertaking precarious journeys. Often adopting paradox and nonsense as Lewis Carroll did, the stories invite adults to deploy the same open-mindedness as children. In MacDonald's own words, 'I do not write for children, but for the childlike, whether of five, or 50, or 75.'

Blending fact and fiction, this trilogy by a very young Tolstoy centres on the inner life of Nikolai as he navigates the universal challenge of growing up. In relating his thoughts and feelings, his self-awareness and embarrassing mistakes, the work is timeless: regardless of era, location and environment, we are given an unvarnished portrait of one boy - both self-important and self-deprecating - as he tries to find his place in the world. The sense of nostalgia, with its strange blend of sadness and solace, is tangible as the years pass and the child becomes a young man. In his old age Tolstoy dismissed this first substantial work of fiction from his early twenties, yet it continues to absorb and touch its readers, who find that his deep understanding of the human condition was already in evidence here.

Dramatic, fast-moving and brutal, Gissing's highly regarded early novel lays bare the reality of urban poverty in 1870s London. Old Michael Snowdon returns to the city with an inheritance that he determines should go towards helping the poor - but goodness and charity are not to play a part here. Everyone has an agenda, and scheming spreads through the story like a disease. Gissing's own experience of London as an outsider in a vast city that both fascinated and appalled him gave him the tools and the drive to create a visceral sense of place. Life is unremittingly grim for just about everyone, from the weak and well-intentioned Jane to the coarse, cunning Clem Peckover and her feckless rival Pennyloaf Candy. The author offers no escape from the gloomy cycle, and there is something alarmingly timeless in the unvarnished portrait of human nature.

Part novel, part philosophical treatise, part satire, Sartor Resartus is a masterpiece of 19th-century literature, following in the footsteps of Swift's Tale of a Tub and Sterne's Tristram Shandy and a key influence on Melville's Moby-Dick. Bubbling over with ideas, humour and inventiveness, it is - on the surface - a long-suffering British editor's sceptical account of a German philosopher's book, Clothes: Their Origin and Influence, which itself is steeped in German idealism. The author, Diogenes Teufelsdroeckh ('god-born devil-dung'), is Carlyle's creation for exploring and expressing wider truths, which emerge through metaphor, comedic commentary, and quite dazzling prose - a novel simply to experience as much as to reflect upon.

In the Ukrainian capital Kiev ('the City'), life has become frightening and fragile. Bulgakov's first full-length novel is set in the harsh and chaotic winter of 1918-19, as power struggles start to play out with brutal consequences. Echoing Tolstoy's approach in War and Peace, Bulgakov contrasts the concerns of domestic life with the wide-ranging and destructive historical events; but where Tolstoy's structure is clear, Bulgakov interweaves narrative, details of military action, snatches of songs, dreams, dialogue and fragments of thought to capture this swirl of confusion on every level, as those caught in the middle of circumstances beyond their control try to ground themselves. Suffering, tragedy and savagery are set out unflinchingly, but the bleakness is offset by a recognition of the resilience of the human spirit, and of the qualities of loyalty and principle - all embodied by the Turbin family. The novel begins and ends with a view of the night sky: beyond the chaos, beauty is still there to see.

In pursuit of her endeavours, Mrs Wagner befriends Jack Straw, a former inmate of Bedlam, who plays a pivotal role as the action, full of plotting and counterplotting, unfolds, culminating in the morgue, where several lives hang in the balance.Jezebel's Daughter, serialised from 1879 to 80, is a prime example of Collins's sensation novels, and was based on his play The Red Vial. Published in 1901, The First Men in the Moon is one of the earliest science-fiction novels in the English language. An impecunious businessman, Bedford, retreats to the Kent coast where he meets the archetypal absent-minded scientist, Dr Cavor, who is on the point of producing a gravity-defying material. His experiments prove successful, making possible one of man's oldest dreams: a journey to the moon. The two men embark on this fantastic voyage - Bedford motivated by the prospect of wealth, and Cavor by the thirst for knowledge. However, when they arrive, they find a world of freezing nights and sweltering days, and signs of a threatening alien presence, from which they may never escape. The novel invites obvious comparisons with its predecessor, Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon, though Wells's approach markedly differs from that of his French counterpart, with Wells being more concerned by the adventure on the moon, even at the expense of scientific plausibility.

The novel News from Nowhere (subtitled An Epoch of Rest Being Some Chapters from a Utopian Romance) is his best-known prose work and describes a humane socialist future as experienced by William Guest, who is transplanted there from the 19th century. Set in London and Oxfordshire, the novel takes place in 2090, over a century after a revolutionary upheaval. It remains a distinctive literary contribution to the concept of the utopian ideal.

Appearing in 1852, Basil was Wilkie Collins's second published novel. The eponymous narrator is emotionally torn between two women: Margaret Sherwin and his sister Clara. His marriage to Margaret, a draper's sexually precocious daughter, is to remain secret and unconsummated for the first year, as agreed with her father. Anticipating Collins's later sensation novels, the plot involves betrayal, insanity and death, with a thrilling conclusion set among the cliffs and whirlpools near Land's End. The book was received with shock upon its publication, most especially due to its treatment of adultery. Here Basil is read by the prolific and popular narrator Nicholas Boulton.

The Charterhouse of Parma is a twisting tale of passion and intrigue following the adventures of Fabrizio del Dongo, a young Italian nobleman who dreams of glory on the battlefields of Europe and finds himself fighting alongside Napoleon at Waterloo. After returning home, Fabrizio becomes entangled in Machiavellian scheming, an ill-advised romance, and a fatal duel that lands him in prison, where he begins a star-crossed love affair with the ethereal Clelia, the commandant's daughter. Admired by Balzac, who considered it the most important novel of his time, The Charterhouse of Parma is a profoundly moving reflection on power, prestige and freedom.

Between 1821 and 1826, the prolific writer and journalist William Cobbett travelled the countryside of the South of England on foot and horseback. Rural Rides is a fascinating account of his journeys, and depicts a way of life in transition, juxtaposing lyrical descriptions of the countryside with criticism of the poverty of agricultural workers. A man of radical politics who encouraged the rural rising of 1830, Cobbett went on to become MP for Oldham and sought to represent the interests of both industrial and agricultural workers. Above all, Rural Rides celebrates agrarian England.

The extant letters of Pliny, written between AD 97 and 112, give us a unique insight into Imperial Rome under the early Antonine emperors. Organised into 10 books, the letters reflect a wide range of topics, mirroring Pliny's own public and private interests. Among many other subjects, the letters also include an eye-witness account of the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, with the final book containing the exchange of letters between the writer (whose career culminated as Governor of Bithynia) and the emperor Trajan.A fascinating document of the career and interests of a politician and imperial official.

Lucy Entwhistle and Everard Wemyss, both recovering from recent unhappiness, meet and quickly fall in love. However, over their new-found bliss looms the spectre of Vera, Wemyss's first wife who died in mysterious circumstances. After their wedding the couple return home and Lucy really does begin to be troubled by what happened to Vera. Considered a high-water mark by the author, the story is an extraordinarily black vision of a young wife who gradually begins to understand that her husband will accept nothing less than total intellectual and emotional servitude.

In Tennyson's gloriously written tale of swashbuckling feats on and off the jousting field, the honour of maidens, knights, queens and kings is won or lost. Zola's La Terre (The Earth) proved highly controversial on publication in 1887 and still retains the power to shock. It follows the fortunes of the Fouan family in the years leading up to the Franco-Prussian War. Old Fouan, the patriarch, draws up a legal contract to divide his farmland between his three children in exchange for an allowance that will support him and his wife through a comfortable retirement. Against a backdrop of rural deprivation, drunkenness, violence and sexual abuse, the Fouans' greed, jealousy and power games cause both the contract and family ties to unravel with tragic consequences.

Set in the financial centres of 1820s Frankfurt and London, Jezebel's Daughter (1880) tells the story of two widows: Madame Fontaine, who will go to any lengths to secure her daughter's marriage, and Mrs Wagner, who devotes herself to her late husband's social reforms. As seen often in Collins, the depiction of strong and 'active' women defies the convention of his time, and the plotline is gripping and full of suspense.

Published in 1884, Against Nature (A rebours) concerns the attempts of its cultured and neurotic anti-hero, Des Esseintes, to escape contemporary Parisian life. At his rural retreat he is able to indulge his particular artistic tastes as he muses on a range of topics including literature, religion and painting.Although regarded as shocking on its publication, Against Nature was received with enthusiasm by the aesthetic movement and, most particularly, Oscar Wilde, who featured the book in The Picture of Dorian Gray. Against Nature marks a departure from the classic form of 19th-century literature, and this audiobook features the full text, with previously expurgated parts restored.
