Ernesto Spinelli is one of the leading exponents existential therapy today and one of its most brilliant practitioners. Rather than expounding a set of theories, Spinelli here gives an account of some of the most unforgettable therapeutic encounters that he has experienced during his professional life. His method comes to life in a way that is compelling and often profoundly moving. These stories of conflict and anxiety derived from human relationships illustrate the existential concern with 'being in the world' and act as catalysts to challenge the reader's personal experience even if he or she has had no direct experience of therapy. Told with an Oliver Sacks - like skill, these encounters introduce us to Mr Jones who refused to grow old gracefully, to moody and introverted Amanda who believed she had been given the wrong body, to Jim the octogenarian who lived in two time zones and to Giles whose obsessive identification with Einstein meant that his sexual activity was like a 'living mathematics' full of enthralling permutations. In the course of this book, Spinelli also tackles head on the last great taboo of therapeutic practice - sexual attraction between therapist and client. In Spinelli's previous and highly acclaimed book "Demystifying Therapy", he began the process of peeling away the layers of mystery that surround therapeutic practice. Now, with astonishing effectiveness, he explains the core of his work and why the existential approach is the way forward in the treatment of the psychological condition. This is not the way of psychotherapeutic certainty and reductionism. It is a way of 'Un-knowing'.

This 5th edition of the bestselling introduction to counselling is thoroughly revised and updated. Pete Sanders, Paula J Williams and Andy Rogers position counselling in contemporary society and render the theory, practice and origins of counselling understandable to all. Other short contributions explore the role of power, language and race in the field of counselling.

The current mainstream way of describing psychological and emotional distress assumes it is the result of medical illnesses that need diagnosing and treating. This book summarises a powerful alternative to psychiatric diagnosis that asks not 'What's wrong with you?' but 'What's happened to you?' The Power Threat Meaning Framework (PTMF) was co-produced by a core group of psychologists and service users and launched in 2018, prompting considerable interest in the UK and worldwide. It argues that emotional distress, unusual experiences and many forms of troubled or troubling behaviour are understandable when viewed in the context of a person's life and circumstances, the cultural and social norms we are expected to live up to and the degree to which we are exposed to trauma, abuse, injustice and inequality. The PTMF offers all of us the tools to create new, hopeful narratives about the reasons for our distress that are not based on psychiatric diagnosis and to find ways forward as individuals, families, social groups and whole societies.

This provocative collection of essays presents a powerful critique of contemporary discourse that portrays work - paid employment - as a moral imperative, essential for our health and well-being. The contributors describe the mental health impact of modern-day workplaces, with their precarity and constant managerial scrutiny. They throw light on the emerging role of the psychologist and psychotherapist as agents of the state within the welfare system. And they question the deployment of mindfulness and other workplace `wellness' initiatives in the place of more genuine and collective attempts to transform work. The Work Cure is an invitation to imagine a different kind of future, where employment no longer represents the chief source of security and meaning, so integral to our well-being. It is also essential reading for anyone who has doubted whether positivity, self-improvement and `resilience' can really be the answer to work's problems.

Do you need your psychiatric diagnosis? This book will help you decide. In this second, updated edition of a best-selling title, Lucy Johnstone revisits the revolution that is underway in mental health. No one doubts that people's distress is very real - but are they actually suffering from illnesses that need a diagnosis? In today's world, where mental health is a crucial topic, this might seem an odd question. And yet even the authors of the diagnostic manuals are admitting that these categories are not supported by evidence. No one has been able to identify the 'chemical imbalances' that are said to cause distress. No one can reliably distinguish one 'mental illness' from another. And the more labels and pills we offer, the faster the increase in mental health problems. Something is badly wrong. Johnstone shows that we need to change the question from 'What's wrong with you?' to 'What's happened to you?' Distress, even its severe forms, arises out of our lives and relationships. Narratives and personal stories show us this truth, whereas labels obscure it. The book ends with a new, hard-hitting analysis of the political, economic and social forces that drive the diagnostic model. In our increasingly competitive, unequal and fragmented world, we are all struggling. We are told the answer lies in finding the right diagnosis. We are encouraged to talk about our 'mental health' instead of the conditions of our lives. And increasingly, we ourselves seek out labels which reassure us that our feelings of shame, failure and difference are not our fault. Indeed, as Johnstone shows, we are not to blame. But nor will the rapid spread of diagnostic labels provide an answer. There are better ways forward. This book is about choice. It is about demystifying one of the most influential myths of our age and giving people the information to make up their own minds. It opens up hope and new ways forward for anyone who has been given a diagnostic label.

This book could be described as a rough guide to person-centred training. A book borne out of personal experience in more ways than one, this volume started life as an idea in a person-centred training group. Laura Buchanan and Rick Hughes then set about collecting hundreds of personal accounts of person-centred training from all over the UK. The book covers all the topics that prospective trainees could wish to know about from funding and course applications through to what happens when you finish the course. It is a compendium of unsentimental testimony from dozens of trainees with some contributions from trainers to complete the picture. Aimed at anyone contemplating embarking on person-centred counselling training, the book may also be of help to those considering trainings in other counselling and psychotherapeutic approaches. An excellent preparation for counsellor training, Experiences of Person-Centred Counselling Training will help prospective applicants ask themselves some key, perhaps painful, questions before starting the course application stage.Deliberately priced to suit the pockets of hard-pressed prospective trainees, it is packed with personal experience and useful information.

Person-Centred Practice, the journal of the British Association for the Person-Centred Approach (BAPCA), was established in 1993 and published twice a year until 2004. With all but the latest issues out of print but in demand, PCCS Books in association with BAPCA published this selection of over thirty papers, representing the breadth of international material published in this journal.

Peggy Natiello's collection of work, spanning over 25 years, has become a favourite amongst students on Person-Centred courses throughout the UK. In the foreword, Jules Seeman observes the work to be 'immensely personal ...taking us to the heart of each issue that she touches.' It is also a scholarly, much referenced work on collaborative power and gender issues.

In this book Jerold Bozarth presents a collection of twenty revised papers and new writings on person-centred therapy representing over 40 years' work as an innovator and theoretician. He reflects upon Carl Rogers' theoretical foundations, emphasises the revolutionary nature of these foundations and offers extended frames for understanding this radical approach to therapy. This book will be essential reading for all with an interest in Client-Centred Therapy and the Person-Centred Approach.

Brings together a collection of writings by authors who have participated in and with groups over a period of thirty years, using the person-centred approach.

This is Madness examines the past, present and possible future of the British mental health system. In this volume, users of services, professionals and academics come together to explore the roles and practices of the mental health service, its place within society and the experiences of those in the system. In eighteen chapters the authors discuss the history of psychiatry, the validity of diagnostic systems and the value of traditional medical and alternative approaches to emotional distress and crisis. Recent changes in mental health legislation and their likely impact on the future shape of mental health services are presented in a way accessible to lay readers, students and mental health practitioners alike. This book will be an invaluable resource for all those involved with, or training for a career in mental health services.

Genuineness, transparency, authenticity and realness are all terms used to convey Rogers' concept of congruence. This book is the first to specifically focus on, and collect critical explorations of, this under under-studied therapeutic condition. Drawing on the work of an international collection of leading writers, serious students of person-centred theory now have writing representing the most vibrant contemporary thinking on congruence thoughtfully drawn together in one volume.

What is empathy? Is it a basic human characteristic? Is there a biological basis for it? How does it work in therapy? Is it a necessary condition for therapeutic change? Sheila Haugh and Tony Merry have assembled a formidable collection of distinguished writers from Client-Centred Therapy and the Person-Centred Approach to help the serious student examine these and other important questions.

In this title, another distinguished international collection of theorists and practitioners lead the serious student to a cutting-edge appreciation of Unconditional Positive Regard. Once dubbed a 'controversial' condition by Germain Lietaer, and seen by Jerold Bozarth as the 'curative factor' in client-centred therapy, UPR has never before had so much attention focused on it. Readers from all disciplines can discover how contemporary person-centred therapists are thinking about, and working with, this 'core' condition.

Understudied to the point of being ignored, conditions one and six of Carl Rogers' 'Necessary and Sufficient' conditions are given due attention for the first time in this volume. Writers from three continents put psychological contact and the client's perception of the therapist not only on the theoretical map, but at the very centre of it. The result is a series of papers outlining genuine new theory and practice for all counsellors and therapists, not only those of a person-centred persuasion.

Developed by Garry Prouty and his associates over a period of 30 years, Pre-Therapy is a method for anyone wanting to work with people whose ability to establish and maintain psychological contact is imparied temporarily or permanently, by illness or injury, whether organic or psychological in origin. This book presents the most complete and up-to-date formulation of Pre-Therapy philosophy, theory and practice. Applications of the method with the most difficult client groups - those described with severe psychosis and others with profound learning disabilites - are illustrated by all three authors, with detailed accounts from Dion Van Werde and Marlis Portner. Pre-Therapy has changed the practice of psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, social workers, counsellors and carers in mainland Europe; now this book introduces its revolutionary ideas to English-speaking readers.

Family, Self and Psychotherapy is a comprehensive person-centred look at the family as the essential element of society, and is valuable reading for professionals and volunteers working with families, children and individuals. Explores our human need to be inter-connected and its implications for both individual and family therapy. The volume is informally divided into three sections. The first section deals with the centrality of the family to our species as a whole and to us as individuals. The next addresses the optimistic philosophical foundations of the person-centred approach: the tapestry of the self and its core drive towards psychological well-being. The last section - the heart of the book - deals with the principles and pragmatics of the person-centred approach to working with individuals and families. Gaylin asserts that therapeutic relationships are more liely to thrive when viewed from this positive perspective especially when therapy operates within the individual's family context.

A companion volume to the best selling 'This is Madness'. At a time when there is an extraordinary energy for change in the world of mental health, 'This is Madness Too' offers a compassionate and scholarly critique of the treatment of children, government policy, the use of anit-depressants and a host of other areas fundamental to mental health services. It brings together the views of service users and professionals in a passionate attempt to tell it as it is.

"Voices of the Voiceless" is an inspiring, passionate and comprehensive exploration that offers hope and encouragement to counsellors and practitioners working with people living with learning difficulties. Although the effects of learning difficulties and the effects of society's treatment of people with learning difficulties are lifelong and often severe, counselling and healing are possible. The author argues that even those people who have the most severe learning disabilities can benefit from counselling, and not simply from behaviour management or medication to manage and control them. Jan Hawkins integrates 15 years' experience of counselling and her 25 years' experience as a mother of a person with learning difficulties. The book contains many moving accounts of the healing process and detailed examples of interdisciplinary working and the power the Person-Centred Approach offers for those who are metaphorically and often literally voiceless.

The Journal Person-Centered Review represents a treasured archive of writing in the person-centered approach. This carefully selected 'best of' collection of 58 classic articles is one that no college, library or training institute in the US should be without. Includes Shlien's 'A Countertheory of Transference', plus the five-paper symposium on 'Psychodiagnosis' led by Angelo Boy.

This book investigates and explores the issues of race and culture in 'a single case study' of one of Rogers' own demonstration films: Carl Rogers Counsels an Individual. Part 1: Right to be Desperate. Part 2: On Anger and Hurt, in order to generate multiple meanings of how person-centred therapy can be more inclusive of Black and ethnic minority clients. The films show a young Black man in a state of remission from leukaemia, in therapy with Carl Rogers. The emerging knowledge and innovative clinical practices that arise from the analysis in the various chapters are all ultimately concerned with multicultural and diversity issues in counselling and psychotherapy. The contributors, from a wide variety of therapeutic approaches and modalities, raise fundamental questions concerning the intersection of race, culture and ethnicity with the therapeutic process.

In this carefully crafted exploration of classic hypnotherapy, Hugh Gunnison has articulated the connection between the ideas and practices of Milton H. Erickson and Carl R. Rogers. This volume gently guides the reader to new understandings in a significant contribution to the work of the experienced counselor, social worker, psychologist or marriage and family therapist. Whatever their setting, practitioners are sure to find stimulating material.

Why do not more client-centred therapists work in psychiatric settings? Whatever the answer, this book is a solid attempt to pave the way for a greater involvement. Lisbeth Sommerbeck brings over 25 years' experience of working as a client-centred therapist in psychiatric contexts to her explanation of the psychiatric system and how to forge a working relationship with other staff. This is a positive bridge-building book, aiming to bring together two helping cultures that otherwise might see each other as hostile. With diploma and masters students in sight it should both widen placement possibilities, and encourage therapists to work in multi-disciplinary teams with confidence.

particular way of practising - maybe heavily influenced by seeing Carl Rogers on film. Although it is tempting to think that all person-centred therapists practice in this way, in reality there is a great deal of variation. In this unique book, Suzanne Keys has compiled accounts of therapists' idiosyncratic practice of Person-Centred Therapy to give lie to the myth that all are nodding Rogers' clones. Person-centred therapists and clients reveal the details of their relationships, presenting a snapshot of current person-centred practice in all its diversity and singularity. Deeply personal yet universal in its relevance to anyone interested in human relating.

This book is the first to focus exclusively on person-centred supervision. The editors explore the practice of supervision in the light of person-centred philosophy and theory, review and critique the generic literature on supervision and then look at some of the issues, questions and dilemmas that arise in supervision. The contributors come from a variety of backgrounds and work in different settings. Editors and contributors share two things: a commitment to person-centred principles in their work, and a wish to extend and expand the range of person-centred practice. This book offers a model of supervision that is consistent with person-centred principles and describes some of the ways in which person-centred practitioners can converse with colleagues from other disciplines and in other areas of work.

Lovelessness and loneliness cannot be explained by chemical changes in the brain and cured by the ingestion of drugs. Lovelessness and loneliness, like anxiety and depression and all the ways of expressing distress which are called mental disorder, are part of what it is to be human, but part that can be understood, diminished and banished from our lives simply by caring wisely for ourselves. Terry Lynch understands and cares wisely for us all. His immense warmth and humanity are revealed on every page of this book. "It is truly a book for our time and for all time". (Dorothy Rowe, psychologist, author, columnist".

For many decades, two powerful alternatives to traditional, authoritarian approaches to psychotherapy and human relationships have been developing in parallel yet separate spheres. This is the first book that brings together the powerful forces of feminist and person-centred theories to offer a dynamic alternative that is based on principles of mutual relationships, genuineness and respect. While the focus of this book is primarily psychotherapy, it also covers general theories, politics, education and spirituality.

Non-directivity is the distinguishing feature of the revolutionary, anti-authoritarian approach to psychotherapy and human relations developed by Carl Rogers. The book brings together an impressive international collection of person-centered writers, each exploring an important facet of non-directivity as it relates to person-centered theory and practice. Their contributions examine the history, theory, applications, and implications of the non-directive attitude. Non-directivity emerges in these pages as a way of being that remains vital and highly relevant to the practice of person-centered therapy, other person-centered applications, and psychotherapy in general.

Conventional therapeutic psychology suggest that we are essentially self-creating and able (with a little help from a therapist) to heal ourselves of the emotional ills that beset us. This kind of view reflects the wishful thinking and make-believe that are necessary for the success of modern consumer capitalism, but it does not reflect the way things are. The alternative set out here, based on the author's many years' experience of practice as a clinical psychologist, offers a language and a set of concepts that enable us to understand ourselves as real, embodied beings in an equally real world that resists mere wishfulness. Our experience of ourselves, as well as much of our conduct, are accounted for in terms of the social operations of power and interest - and a framework is established for making sense of our emotional distress as the outcome of environmental pressures. David Smail argues that to take ourselves seriously as social beings, embodied in a real world over which as individuals we have very little influence, is by no means grounds for despair. Rather, it encourages modesty, appreciation of good fortune, compassion and recognition of our common humanity.
