The aim of this book is to review recent research and technical advances, including the progress in design codes, related to the engineering applications of light gauge metal sections made in carbon, high strength and stainless steel, as well as aluminium alloys. Included is a review of the new technologies for connections of light gauge metal members. Main advanced applications, for residential, non residential and industrial buildings and pallet rack systems are also covered. For the first time, this book takes into account all the metallic materials now used more and more for structural components. The book will be of great interest not only for researchers but also for design engineers faced to the use of new metallic materials in modern structural applications.

Was ist Programmieren?

The principal objective of this book is to relate the random distributions of defects and material strength on the microscopic scale with the deformation and residual strength of materials on the macroscopic scale. To reach this goal the authors considered experimental, analytical and computational models on atomic, microscopic and macroscopic scales.

The articles in this volume present the state-of-the-art in noise prediction, modeling and measurement. The articles are partially based on class notes provided during the course `Noise sources in turbulent shear flows', given at CISM on April 2011. The first part contains general concepts of aero acoustics, including vortex sound theory and acoustic analogies, in the second part particular emphasis is put into arguments of interest for engineers and relevant for aircraft design: jet noise, airfoil broadband noise, boundary layer noise (including interior noise and its control) and the concept of noise sources, their theoretical modeling and identification in turbulent lows. All these arguments are treated extensively with the inclusion of many practical examples and references to engineering applications.

I have attempted to prepare this volume in such a way as to provide a source of information on the normal physiology of speech and song as well as on the disorders of those functions. To the extent that I have succeeded it should be of interest to physiologists, physicians, and teachers and students of the VOlce. The book is by no means a text on laryngology, nor is it a treatise on the physiology of breathing mechanics, nor yet is it a manual telling how to teach or learn voice production. If none of these, what is it? It is a discussion of the application of breathing mechanics to phonation of interest to the respir- atory physiologist, of certain aspects of physiology and medicine of interest to the teacher or student of voice, and of the problems of voice production and its maladies of interest to the laryngologist. I have undergone a number of experiences during the past 50 years which I believe have qualified me to undertake this task with some special hope of success. In my youth I studied voice for twelve years with four outstanding teachers and performed publicly as a lieder singer, in oratorio, chorus, and opera. Later I trained for and entered the medical profession in the specialty of otolaryngology. Later still I engaged in research on the physiology of breath ing mechanics and phonation, especially singing.

This volume presents and discusses recent advances in Boundary Element Methods (BEM) and their solid mechanics applications in those areas where these numerical methods prove to be the ideal solution tool. The aim is to illustrate these methods in their most recent forms developed during the last five to ten years and demonstrate their advantages when solving a wide range of solid mechanics problems encountered in many branches of engineering, such as civil, mechanical or aeronautical engineering.

The book is written by leading experts in the field presenting an up-to-date view of the subject matter in a didactically sound manner. It presents a review of the current knowledge of the behaviour of soft tissues in the cardiovascular system under mechanical loads, and the importance of constitutive laws in understanding the underlying mechanics is highlighted. Cells are also described together with arteries, tendons and ligaments, heart, and other biological tissues of current research interest in biomechanics. This includes experimental, continuum mechanical and computational perspectives, with the emphasis on nonlinear behaviour, and the simulation of mechanical procedures such as balloon angioplasty.

The subject of the book is the design of aluminium alloys structures. The subject is treated from different points of view, like technology, theory, codification and applications.Aluminium alloys are successfully employed in the transportation industry;A parallel trend has been observed in the last decades in civil engineering structures, where aluminium alloys compete with steel (long-span roofing, bridges, hydraulic structures, offshore superstructures). This volume collects the lectures of out-standing international experts, who are all involved in the codification activity of Eurocode 9 on Aluminium Structural Design. It illustrates, with particular reference to the fields of transportation and civil engineering, the basic design principles from the material properties and the technological aspects of their application, to the evaluation of the resistance of the structural elements (member and plates) under static, dynamic and fatigue loading conditions.

The planned construction of traffic routes through the European Alps represents a challenge for science and technology. In the past decades, Austria has gained a leading position in the field of tunnelling. This has been verified by many successful projects all over the world, which have been realised with the well-known "New Austrian Tunnelling Method". However, further development and economic success of modern tunnelling methods, which are still partly based on empirical assumptions, can only be assured if their scientific basis is improved. The book discusses the application of numerical simulation methods to assist tunnel engineers. Numerical simulation tools for the estimation of the required tunnel support and the required construction measures are described in this book. By using them, it is possible to study the impact on construction and environment during the planning stage and during construction. This will result in an improvement of the safety and economy of tunnels.

The book presents the state-of-the-art in the interdisciplinary field of fluid mechanics applied to cardiovascular modelling. It is neighter a monograph nor a collection of research papers, rather an extended review in the field. It is arranged in 4 scientific chapters each presenting thoroughly the approach of a leading research team; two additional chapters prepared by biomedical scientists present the topic by the applied perspective. This volume covers a wide range of the current topics in the field. It is an advanced text, however it derives from school lectures and presents several introductory portions to the advanced topics. A unique feature is a substantial (approx. one fourth of the book) medical introductory part, written by clinical researchers for scientific readers, that would require a large effort to be collected otherwise.

The 2003 edition of ICANNGA marks a milestone in this conference series, because it is the tenth year of its existence. The series began in 1993 with the inaugural conference at Innsbruck in Austria. At that first conference, the organisers decided to organise a similar scientific meeting every two years. As a result, conferences were organised at Ales in France (1995), Norwich in England (1997), Portoroz in Slovenia (1999) and Prague in the Czech Republic (2001). It is a great honour that the conference is taking place in France for the second time. Each edition of ICANNGA has been special and had its own character. Not only that, participants have been able to sample the life and local culture in five different European coun tries. Originally limited to neural networks and genetic algorithms the conference has broadened its outlook over the past ten years and now includes papers on soft computing and artificial intelligence in general. This is one of the reasons why the reader will find papers on fuzzy logic and various other topics not directly related to neural networks or genetic algorithms included in these proceedings. We have, however, kept the same name, "International Conference on Artificial Neural Networks and Genetic Algorithms". All of the papers were sorted into one of six principal categories: neural network theory, neural network applications, genetic algorithm and evolutionary computation theory, genetic algorithm and evolutionary computation applications, fuzzy and soft computing theory, fuzzy and soft computing applications.

Bisher schicksalhaft, bisher so wenig, bisher so dunkel. Bisher therapeutische O- macht. Bisher.

Preoperative and intraoperative echocardiography has become an indispensable tool for guiding mitral valve surgery and has fostered the development of many innovative surgical techniques. Mitral valvuloplasty is now an established surgical method for the treatment of mitral insufficiency but the success is largely dependent on the extent of the underlying disease of the mitral valve. The book by Dr. Ng and coauthors is an extraordinary presentation of the relation between echocardiographic display of mitral valve pathology and reconstructive mitral valve surgery. The atlas provides an excellent illustrative guide to teach echocardiographic-anatomic correlations and educates the reader on the techniques of mitral valve repair. The quality of the illustrations, particularly the surgical photographs is exquisite. The book will be helpful for cardiologists and cardiac surgeons.

Brain edema is a simple phenomenon – an abnormal increase of brain tissue volume by the increase of brain tissue water content. However the etiology is not simple and relating to a wide variety of neurological disorders including ischemia, trauma, tumor, hemorrhage and hydrocephalus. It is still a major cause of death in the neurological/neurosurgical ward. This volume is an up-to-date report on progress in brain edema research, diagnosis and treatment, including papers presented at the 12th International Symposium on Brain Edema and Brain Tissue Injury in 2002. Major topics include molecular biology and blood-brain barrier disorders, ischemic and traumatic brain edema, imaging and diagnosis of brain edema, treatment and radiation effect. Various papers in the rapidly growing fields of neuroimaging and molecular medicine are also included.

This volume highlights the important role played by neurosurgeons and their techniques in neurorehabilitation. The authors review the recent advances made in neurosurgical techniques which can contribute to the patient's functional recovery from neurological deficits, such as movement disorders, bladder dysfunction, pain and other sensory disturbances, and cognitive dysfunction after CNS damage. They also demonstrate that when neurosurgeons are actively involved in applying a multidisciplinary approach during early neurorehabilitation, the patient's functional recovery is greatly facilitated through the timely use of various different neurosurgical techniques, including nerve grafting, cell transplantation, cortical stimulation, deep brain and spinal cord stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation, and intrathecal drug therapy. The importance of such a multidisciplinary approach is discussed in terms of a new concept, the neurosurgical re-engineering of the damaged CNS.
